Abstract

The reading’s result in this research has function to find out if this comic in reading skill can improve student’s understanding especially, to understand the meaning based on the reading material. Researcher used quantitative method to collect the subject data. Students can read comic with picture, colour, and dialogue that can be more interesting as reading media. At the school researcher start the research with pre-experimental class researcher used pre-test, treatment and post-test to collect the data. The post-test used three types of tests which is comprehension test, play idea questions and inference questions. The subject of this research was grade nine Junior High School at SMP Negeri 3 Tondano, which consisted of 29 students. The data were calculated with the result of students’ pre-test was 51 and the post-test was 85. The different score between pre-test and post-test was 34. The result of this study is indicated that mean score of post-tests was higher 34% more than pre-test. As the result, researcher can conclude that reading comprehension using comic can help students improve their reading skill. This media also can be an effective way that can help student do not feel bored in class with the learning media.

Abstract

Language is one of the abilities possessed by everyone to communicate with others. There are some students who have difficulty in speaking English. This happened because they feel that speaking English is a difficult thing, beside that they also feel confused when asked to speak 1 word in EnglishThe purpose of this research to find out whether using voice recorder can improve students speaking skill. This study was carried out on third grade students at SMP Negeri 3 Tondano during the academic year 2022/2023. A quantitative research approach was used in this pre-experimental study. There are 32 students in one class for the subject. The experiment was divided into three stages: pre-test, treatment, and post-test. The instrument of the study was the oral test. The datum was obtained by pre-test and post-test. Before giving the treatment, the writer administered the pre-test to find out student’s speaking skill at the beginning. The post test was conducted at the end after gave the treatment.  The result showed that the average post-test score (4,12) was the higher of the pre-test score (2,5).

Abstract

The aim of the study was to find out whether or not students' reading comprehension of narrative texts might be enhanced by using the reading aloud strategy. The Reading Aloud Strategy is a reading exercise that uses a loud voice reading style to help kids concentrate and pay attention. 20 students from the VII grade at SMP Negeri 1 Eris made up the sample for this quantitative study. The researcher employed a pre-experimental design with one group pre-test and post-test design. Multiple-choice examinations, true-false quizzes, and essays served as the research tools in this study. Using the average score algorithm, the research's data were statistically analyzed. The data calculated using the students' pre-test results was 49, and the test was 78 after. Between the pre-test and post-test, there was a 29 point change in the pupils' scores. According to the study's findings, the pre-average test's score was lower than the post-average test's score. The researcher draws the conclusion that the reading aloud strategy works well to increase pupils' reading comprehension.

Abstract

This research was the description of an attempt to find out the effective technique to overcome the students' problem in using verbs which deal with the third person singular in the simple present tense correctly. To solve the problem above, he used repetition drill as a technique. The method of this research is pre-experimental descriptive method with one pre-test and post-test. The population was the students in second year at English Education Department and the sample consisted of 34 students. According to the result of this research the writer used the statistic instrument in analyzing the obtained data. And the finding shows that the result of the mean score of pre-test is 4.06 and the mean score of post-test is 7.05; this means that the result of post-test is much better than the pre-test. It can be concluded that the use of Repetition drill technique was effectively to solve the students' problem. The writer suggested that English teachers use repetition drill in teaching to increase the students' mastery in using verbs which deal with the third person singular in simple present tense. Abstract

This study aims at describing simile in Taylor Swift Songs. It is conducted to identify the types, the function and the contextual meaning of simile used in Taylor Swift’s Songs. In conducting this research, qualitative analysis is used. The data are analyzed through the steps of data reduction, data display, conclusion and verification as proposed by Miles & Huberman (2007). The instrument of collecting the data is the researchers themselves as the key instrument. The findings of this research show that there are two types of similes used in Taylor Swift’s Songs those are open and closed simile. Simile allows readers to relate the feelings of the author to their personal experiences. The similes are used to make the song more imaginable and meaningful. The most important function of simile is to draw sharp pictures in the mind through comparisons, to give deeper insight into things, person, and ideas trough suggestive association, or to explain abstract, complicated ideas in simple concrete imagery. It’s better to use as it should be so the people will not be offended but should make comfortable sense.  In using simile, we need to consider with the situation and context. The contextual meaning is the meaning of the words according to the situation in which they are used.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine whether or not there is an effect on the use of generative learning strategy to improve students’ writing skill in descriptive texts at grade eight of SMP N 6 Tondano. This study involves 30 students consisting 15 students in experimental group and 15 students in control group. This study uses a quantitative research design which is a quasi-experimental research. Data collecting is done by giving a test to write a descriptive text with pre-test and post-test, by students’ in two groups. The mean score of experimental group is 17.73 and control group was 9.6. The data are analyzed using the t-test formula, the results is 5.055. The degrees of freedom is 28 were competency interval 0.05 (95%) is 2.048 and 0,01 (99%) is 2.763. Based on the result, it can be concluded that students’ skill in writing descriptive texts using generative learning increases, but does not increase significantly because from the post-test results on experimental group there are no students’ who are able to achieve score above the KKM. So, the researchers suggest that generative learning strategy should be replaced with other learning strategy.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to reveal Emma’s superiority complex in Jane Austen’s Emma. In conducting this research, the method used is qualitative. The main source of this research is the novel itself. The second sources are based on books, the internet, and articles to support the writers in conducting this study. In analyzing the data, the researchers use psychoanalysis theory. The result shows that the superiority complex is the one psychological disorder where the main character, Emma, feels superior compared to other characters. This attitude should not be allowed to develop because it can break other people's character. There is nothing indication of psychological or social changed. Emma is lavishly praised by her father and governess, that prevent her from realizing her flaws and ill prepared her for life in the real world. Emma's background is unclear, and she doesn't learn anything about herself. Emma's marriage is not a true match founded only on shared sentiments of love.

Abstract

This research aims to find out the reading habits of the students of class 2018 at English Education study program. This research was conducted at English Education Department, Faculty of Languages and arts Universitas Negeri Manado. Descriptive quantitative survey was the method used in this research and the instrument to collecting data by using a questionnaire. That was distributed to 25 students. The result of this research showed that the respon of students’ reading habits based on their experiences to the statements was mostly positive. And researcher concluded that the students of class 2018 at English Education Study Program, English Education Department of Universitas Negeri Manado who were the samples in this study like to read, feel happy, and are also excited when reading. They also love to read for fun and to get information. Hopefully, this research can present information as reference material for the next researchers and English teachers in providing assistance, motivation to maintain good reading habits, improve teaching techniques, in order to increase and improve their English reading skills.

Abstract

The research is pragmatics approach study of An Analysis of Illocutionary Acts Performed by the Main Character in Divergent Movie. The objectives of this researcher are to find out the types of illocutionary acts are performed by the main character’s utterance, and to find out dominantly of types of illocutionary acts are used by the main character’s utterance. The researcher uses the descriptive qualitative method to describe and analyze the selected of illocutionary acts which are watching a movie and then classifies them according to John R. Searle’s concept types of illocutionary acts. The technique of collecting data are (1) watching the movie for several times in order to understand the whole story (2) collecting the data, transcribing the data from the dialogue in the movie into form of list, and identifying the listed dialogue that contain types of illocutionary acts carried out by the participant (3) finding out the types of illocutionary acts carried out by the participant representative, directive, commissives, expressive, and declarative. The researcher uses content analysis which focus on analyzing types of illocutionary acts and the dominant of types of illocutionary acts in Divergent movie carried out by the main character.

Abstract

The study's objective is to identify kinds of slang used in Justin Bieber's lyrics and the slang words used in them. The researcher analyzed the data using qualitative research. The author followed Bogdan and Biklen's (1992) suggested methods for analyzing the collected data. 30). The data were analyzed in four stages: unitization, categorization, explanation, and interpretation. The researcher used four steps to collect data: 1) Reading and comprehending the lyrics.2) determining which slang terms are utilized in the lyrics; 3) highlighting the slang terms in the lyrics; 4) identify and categorize slang terms' meanings. In light of the consequence of  information about shoptalk language in Justin Bieber melodies verse. following conclusions can be drawn from the research's findings and analysis:The slang used in a song not only teaches us new vocabulary but also new information. As a result, slang is one of our ways of expressing ourselves, teaches us about language and slang, and makes our songs interesting. Nowadays, slang is a part of language, so it is easy to understand and improve one's knowledge of slang. There is slang in movies, songs, tapes, journals, and the language of unique groups; however, it is important to know that slang is polite language used in conversation. By learning slang, the reader will understand the new language
