Abstract

Grammar overall, is a challenging language skill. Even experienced English lecturers may face difficulties in explaining grammar to students. Grammar is the primary skill to be developed when learning English as a foreign language. Yet, when other languages' skills gained more attention, grammar came to be seen as the least important skill. Without using proper assessment to reduce student understanding, this is frequently explained in a straightforward manner by means of other skills. This study focuses on the challenges English language teachers use when teaching grammar at the second-grade level. In this essay, every single English language teacher participates. The researchers interviewed them, copied, and analysed the data obtained from the interview. Problems and difficulties of students are no less important for lecturers to know in teaching grammatical structures. In this case, English lecturers are challenged to find more strategic and creative ways of teaching grammar. Mastery of good grammar guarantees students' ability to master other skills such as writing and speaking. Due to this, the study may benefit other English language teachers and lead to new ideas for addressing the problem at hand. Everyone agreed that she experienced three challenges while they were learning grammar. This study can be a good reference for other English lecturers and students, and parents in overcoming these challenges.

Abstract

Teaching English language is a big challenge in Minahasa. Students are still unable to master or even comprehend English even after eleven years learning the language at primary and secondary levels. This research entitled “Tontemboan Affixes Relates to English Tenses” aims to identify, classify and describe the affixes and analyze the similarities and differences of affixes used in both languages, English and Tontemboan. This research used descriptive method, which includes preparation, collecting the data, and analyzing the data. The result showed that some affixes in Totemboan language have different functions of affixes in English. Simple present tense functions the habitual action by adding ma’ before the morpheme, following the verb. The present continuous tense which is formed by adding ma’ as prefix has a global meaning. Past continuous tense indicated by adding the prefix ma’ and simple past tensi indicated by adding a base prefix and infix with the initials are consonant.

Abstract

The purpose of research is the analyze of romance in Stephenie Meyer's Twilight. This research categorized as qualitative research .The data collected in the form of words as well as quotation rather than numbers. Objective approach was applied in analyzing the data. The result of the research shows that the love between Bella and Edward reflected of desire to unite the difference between love and vampire, immortal and mortality .The image of vampire as a soul and other one as an evil vampire.

Abstract

The findings of the research, discussion and conclusion. The purposes of the research were to identify and to describe the types of hyperbolic expressions used in the song lyrics of famous male singer Bruno Mars. Descriptive method was applied in conducting the research. Ten popular songs sung by Bruno Mars became the focus entitled Grenade, Dancing with the Star, 24K Magic, Just the Way You Are, It Will Rain, Locked Out of Heaven, Versace on the Floor, Nothin’ on You, Lost and Talking to the Moon. The researcher only took those songs which were released from 2010 till the latest as sources of data. The data were collected and analysed by linguistic theory related to hyperboles as proposed by Christodoulidou (2011). The finding shows that there are 87 hyperbolic expressions found in song lyrics of Bruno Mars. There are 38 hyperboles in the song lyrics of Bruno Mars grouped as overstatement and the rest are 19 hyperboles grouped as hyperboles in impossible description. The first type becomes the most frequent hyperbole type used in the song lyrics of Bruno Mars and the second becomes the least. It can be concluded that hyperboles in song lyrics play powerful social functions and allow songwriters to convey complex emotions, create lasting impressions, and craft lyrics that resonate with a wide audience. The use of figurative language serves as an effective means to enhance the words employed in song lyrics.

Abstract

One of the language components that students studying a foreign language need to grasp is vocabulary. A vocabulary is a list of words with meanings that we use to communicate our emotions and ideas through language. This implies that kids can produce a greater number of sentences both in writing and speaking if they have a strong vocabulary. Among the many instructional resources available for vocabulary instruction is the use of flashcards. The purpose of this study was to determine how well flashcards work for increasing pupils' vocabulary. Twenty seventh-grade students from SMP Negeri 2 Tondano participated in this study. Pre-experimental design with one group undergoing pre- and post-testing was employed in this study. The study's findings indicate that using flashcards can help pupils' vocabulary grow. The average pre-test score was 5.65, while the average post-test score was 7.55. These results indicated a significant difference between the pre- and post-test scores, indicating that flashcards significantly improve student achievement in terms of vocabulary mastery for grade VII students at SMP Negeri 2 Tondano. It is advised that educators teach vocabulary to their students using flashcards.

Abstract

This research aimsed to describe the form of slang and the meaning of the use of slang in Agnez Mo's posts on her Instagram account. The data source used in this research was in the form of sentences written in isntagram captions that show the form of slang and the meaning of the use of slang contained in Agnez Mo's account. The data collection technique used in this research is the free listening method followed by the note-taking technique. The data analysis used in this research is descriptive qualitative analysis that describes the form of slang and the meaning of the use of slang in Agnez Mo's posts. Using the theory of Keith Allah and Kate Burridge (2006), the result shows that there are 55 types of slang consisting of 1 Fresh and Creative, 13 Flippant, 10 Imitative, 6 Acronym, and 25 Clipping. Furthermore, it shows that slang is not just a language style, but also reflects social and cultural changes in the ever-evolving online communication, slang has become a part of everyday conversation to convey messages easily and casually.

Abstract

This study uses descriptive and contrastive analysis. Data in English were collected from books related to sociolinguistics, speaking books, and sources from the internet. Data in Sangihe language were collected by writing and recording conversations in situations, times, and opportunities such as conversations that occur when passing each other. On the street, conversations between family members (at home), conversations between teachers and school officials, conversations in the office, places of worship, and others, the data were analyzed using the concepts of Fishman, Tillit, and Bruder and to explore language comparisons using comparative theory. The results of the study indicate that the comparison Language style between English and Sangihe dialect Siau in forms and patterns in greetings and expressions farewell in has two forms, namely formal and informal. In addition, researchers found three patterns in greetings in English and Siau language. Sangihe dialect. The patterns are formal greetings, informal greetings, and not greeting each other. The pattern is the same in English, namely saying goodbye as a greeting. Meanwhile, the Sangihe language dialect Siau only has two greeting patterns, namely formal and informal. S alam and expressions farewell in English and Sangihe is different. For example, greetings and farewells in English are diverse. Meanwhile, in Sangihe, they are limited.

Abstract

The title of this research is " An Analysis of Figurative Language In Adele Songs’ Easy On Me And When We Were Young ". This research aims to describe the types and meaning of figurative language in lyrics of Adele’s Songs. The method used is descriptive qualitative, analysis with a pragmatics approach. The relevant theories that researchers use are figurative language (Rambi & Kumayas 2021:378), theory of types of figurative language in Keraf (2004:136-145). Based on the research results, The figurative language found in “Easy on me” reveals her self-reflection mode as well as vulnerability while navigating through acceptances as well as changes. On the same note “When We Were Young” employs descriptive language full of images and metaphors that express melancholic feelings about time passing.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out, what are the students’ difficulties in reading comprehension at 8th grade student in SMP N 1 Dimembe. The researcher used qualitative research with a qualitative descriptive design involving 29 student of class 8th C and for the interviews the researcher took six students as the informants. Information collection was carried out through observation, interviews, and documentation. There are 3 stages of data analysis, first is data condensation, second, data display, third, drawing and verifying conclusions.In analyzing the data, the researcher finds out the difficulty by the student in reading comprehension namely: difficulties to understanding the meaning of the word, the difficulties to understand the long sentence within the text, difficulties in understanding the main idea, difficulties in understanding the grammar, and difficulties to create the inferences.
