Abstract

This essay is a preliminary analysis on social condition of Chinese people as well as the Kalang of Java in relation to their social identity as ‘merchant family’. Both of them are minority groups of people in rural Java. Though ethnographical research in a Javanese village in Banyumas District, Central Java for four months, I realised that the Chinese and the Kalang are identified by the Javanese as ‘merchant family’ based on ‘market-place culture’ (budaya pasar). Accordingly, market-place culture can be defined as collective way of life that placed local trading activity and livelihood as a main socio-economic orientation of the family. Meanwhile, the Javanese, as dominant ethnic group in the village, see themselves and been seen by Chinese and the Kalangs as thani or traditional land cultivator who hold ‘land-culture’ (budaya lahan) as their main socio-economic orientation. Among their Javanese neighbours, the Chinese and the Kalangs’ social identity is accepted through reproducing their myth of origin and to differentiate their group norms and values.

Abstract

Sunda Wiwitan as a religion had existed prior to the other, more well known religions in Indonesia, but is currently isn’t recognized as an official religion by Act No.1/PNPS/1965. The state, as opposed to guaranteeing the freedom of belief and its practice, instead imposes restrictions on religion in this particular case, leaving the believers of Sunda Wiwitan feeling abandoned and as outcasts. As a result, many violations and discriminations are experienced by adherents of Sunda Wiwitan. One example of such discrimination is the “whiting-out” of the “religion” column in ID Cards. The result of this discrimination is difficulty in accessing civil documents, in addition to verbal violence from certain parts of the society who assume the Sunda Wiwitan belief as heretic.

Abstract

The objective of this article is to analyse the role played by house yards or home garden as source of food storage, household energy, and cash for peasant household. For Javanese peasant, yard was not only a  place for work, but also a space to represent economy and social status. The importance of house yards is felt in difficult situation such as economic crises and corpse failure. Research questions in this anysisis are how about the characteristics of Wetankali village and how about the pattern of using home garden or home yard there. Research method used is etnography with survey using questionaire and secondary data analysis. The research was conducted in Watankali, Kutocilik Banyumas. For Javanese, yards become a place for final defence. Peasent often plant their home garden with several kind of plants that have economical value to sell so that they will earn money from it. Along with the tendency of population growth, traditional home garden is changed to become housing complex. Consequently, for poor household, the source of food suplement and cheap energy deteriorates.

Abstract

This paper is about forms of mysticl behavior among Javanese traders in a traditional marketplace. Through an ethnographic approach, behaviors such as tossing coins, buying their own product, closing kiosk on bad day, tapping money on merchandise, and others can be condidered as mystical behaviors because it is found in the belief that if they do then profit will come and misfortune will go away. Although on the surface they appear irrational, basically these behaviors are manifestation of a certain rationality. Theoritically, the traders’ mystical behavior can be placed in a situation of rational-irrationality, a situation in which irrational actions are carried out because they are considered, instrumentally, rational eventhough epistemologically irrational. The context of this situation is the cultural and social demands of the trader’s daily experience as a member of a particular social universe.
