Abstract

This study investigates the linguistic register used in TikTok Shop, focusing on how language varies in online commerce compared to everyday communication. This study aims to identify both the linguistic forms and meanings of registers commonly used in this context. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected from TikTok Shop interactions, including product listings, status updates, and comments. The analysis revealed various linguistic forms, such as nouns (eight items), verbs (five items), adjectives (two items), compound words (five items), abbreviations (five items), and phrases (five items). In terms of semantics, this study identified 11 examples of lexical meaning and 19 examples of contextual meaning. The findings highlight how specific linguistic features of online shop discourse reflect the dynamic and adaptive nature of language on digital marketing platforms.

Abstract

Discourse analysis of popular news is a crucial step in understanding the comprehensibility of information in mass media. This study analyzes the formal and semantic aspects of a news article titled "Komdigi Peringatkan TikTok dan Roblox untuk Segera Batasi Akun Anak di Bawah 16 Tahun" (Komdigi Warns TikTok and Roblox to Immediately Limit Accounts for Children Under 16) published on Kompas.com. Utilizing the theories of Halliday and Hasan as well as Renkema, this research identifies various lingual units that function as discourse markers. The research findings reveal a dominance of grammatical cohesion, specifically references and conjunctions, which serve to connect sentences. Furthermore, the use of collocation and hyponymy was found to strengthen the lexical aspects of the text. The presence of contrastive and additive semantic relationships ensures that the discourse remains coherent. The study concludes that the appropriate use of linguistic devices significantly determines the readability of public policy news. Abstract

This study aims to analyze the use of cohesive devices in undergraduate thesis abstracts by English Department students in Indonesia through the Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) approach. The data consist of 20 thesis abstracts selected from three public and private universities and were analyzed qualitatively focusing on grammatical cohesion (reference, substitution, ellipsis, conjunction) and lexical cohesion (repetition, synonym, antonym, collocation). The findings reveal that reference and conjunction are the most dominant grammatical cohesive devices; however, errors such as ambiguous references and illogical conjunction usage are frequently found. On the lexical level, repetition serves as the main strategy, while the use of synonyms and collocations remains limited, reducing lexical variety and the clarity of arguments. These findings underscore the importance of integrating SFL into academic writing instruction to improve students’ cohesion competence.
