Abstract

This research's purpose is to create and subsequently confirm the efficacy of a virtual world-based learning experience representing a bygone civilization, specifically the Srivijaya Empire, as part of a project to digitally preserve and teach about historic events. The research used research and development techniques based on the 4-D model which includes a definition, design, development, and validation phase. The final products being developed include virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and other forms of virtual representations such as 3D models, and will also include an immersive video format with 360° views which can be viewed via YouTube in order to make them more widely available as well as accessible to more people. The needs analysis showed there were problems with the way history has been traditionally taught, especially when trying to provide local historical heritage in terms of what happened and how it happened within the context of that particular location. The design phase focused on creating a narrative reconstruction that depicts the maritime trading network and socio/cultural/religious life that existed during the time of the Srivijaya Kingdom, based on both historiography and archaeological evidence. During the development phase, there was a validation process for the two media specialists and the two content specialists who validated the content by completing a limited practicality test with sixty students. Validation results were very positive in each tested area: visual design, navigation systems; use of technology, and historical accuracy (scores averaged above 4.5 on a 5-level Likert scale). Students perceived the research materials as highly practical, especially regarding usability and their ability to increase their historical contextual knowledge. At present this research represents an initial phase limited to validation and practicality testing, and thus has not provided an assessment of learning effectiveness through experimental comparison. This research creates a prototype for immersive digital heritage learning, utilizing historical reconstruction based on metaverse principles and combining these elements and theories for instructional design. Therefore, the results will create a framework that can serve as a basis for further development toward supporting the preservation of digital cultural heritage through educational systems.

Abstract

Langlang Village is a village in Singosari District with a strategic location close to the main route to Batu City and unique umbul potential. The aim of the service activity is to inventory spatial data through mapping Langlang Village. This service activity method uses a Rural Participatory Appraisal approach. The design of mapping activities in Langlang consists of 3 stages: the FGD stage, data collection training stage, and information presentation stage. Characteristics of participatory mapping include a) involving all members of the community, b) the theme, objectives, and process of implementing the mapping are determined by the community, c) the map produced is aimed at the interests of the community, d) most of the information contained in the map comes from local knowledge, and e) the community determines the use of the resulting map. Community service activities produce village maps containing geospatial information in the area. The use of maps is used as a guide in regional planning by local village officials and the community, providing community understanding and knowledge in understanding the characteristics of the region and its administrative boundaries.

Abstract

Background: The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, particularly large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT and other AIs, has fundamentally reshaped the landscape of modern academic research, raising both opportunities and critical challenges for higher education institutions worldwide. Aim: This study systematically maps the contexts in which AI has been applied in modern academic research during 2015–2025 and examines how AI has influenced the process and outputs of educational research over the past decade. Method: A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) design was employed, guided by the PRISMA protocol and PICOC framework. A total of 5,106 articles were identified during the initial ScienceDirect database search. Following a rigorous multi-stage screening process based on predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria, 19 articles were selected for final analysis. Results and Discussion: The findings reveal that AI has been applied across a broad and continuously expanding range of academic contexts, including automated writing assessment, citation prediction, AI-generated instructional content, academic integrity evaluation, and AI literacy development in academic libraries, with ChatGPT and similar LLMs serving as the primary catalysts of this expansion from 2022 onward. The influence of AI on educational research processes and outputs is simultaneously accelerative and disruptive: while AI demonstrably enhances efficiency, consistency, and productivity, it also poses serious threats to assessment integrity, authorship norms, and equity of access, particularly for international students and institutions from the Global South. Conclusion: AI is not merely a technical tool but a transformative force that demands systemic, ethical, and pedagogical responses across the entire academic ecosystem, including assessment redesign, integrated AI literacy curricula, and the development of coherent global ethical governance frameworks for AI use in academic research.
