Abstract

Body Mass Index (BMI) status in adolescents is a key indicator for assessing health, both physically and psychologically. Adolescents with abnormal BMIMsuch as being overweight or underweight tend to have specific perceptions of their body shape (body image). Negative body perceptions can affect self-confidence, psychosocial well-being, and the quality of life of adolescents. This study aims to determine the relationship between Body Mass Index (BMI) and body image among adolescents at SMAN 06 Pekanbaru. The study employed a quantitative method with a cross-sectional design. The study population consisted of all 312 tenth-grade students at SMAN 06 Pekanbaru, with a sample size of 176 respondents selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected through measurements of weight and height to determine BMI categories, as well as the completion of the Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire (MBSRQ) to measure body image. Data analysis was performed using univariate and bivariate methods, employing the Fisher’s Exact test with a 95% confidence level. The results of the study indicate that the majority of respondents in the underweight and normal weight categories have a positive body image, whereas respondents in the overweight, Class I obesity, and Class II obesity categories are more likely to have a negative body image. The Fisher’s exact test yielded a p-value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), indicating a significant association between Body Mass Index (BMI) and body image among adolescents at SMAN 06 Pekanbaru.
