Abstract

This study examines English language skills within the Merdeka Curriculum, focusing on the writing difficulties faced by students, particularly in producing descriptive texts. The methods commonly employed by teachers tend to emphasize reading skills, which negatively impacts writing learning outcomes. This research utilizes a quantitative approach with a factorial experimental design, involving 64 seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Adiwerna, divided into control and experimental classes. Data were collected through tests assessing students' writing skills in descriptive texts, with variables including the Project-Based Learning (PjBL) method based on digital infographics, writing learning outcomes, and academic achievement. The analysis results indicate significant differences between pre-test and post-test scores, as well as differences in academic achievement between students in low and high categories. There is also an interaction between academic achievement and the teaching method on students' learning outcomes. This study recommends the development of teaching methods that combine conventional elements with PjBL, as well as the need for teacher training in implementing these methods to enhance students' learning outcomes. Further research is also suggested to explore ways to increase student motivation in the learning process.

Abstract

This study focuses on efforts to improve student learning outcomes in the subject of Sociology at SMA Negeri 1 Slawi. It was found that student learning outcomes were still suboptimal, attributed to a lack of variation in teaching methods, minimal active student engagement, and limited learning media. To address these issues, the study implemented a Project Based Learning (PjBL) model based on ecomedia. Using a quantitative method and factorial design, the research involved 72 tenth-grade students, with class X.9 serving as the experimental group and class X.8 as the control group. Through the analysis of pre-test and post-test scores, the study evaluated the differences in learning outcomes before and after the implementation of the PjBL model. The results indicated that the ecomedia-based PjBL model had a significant positive impact on student learning outcomes for both male and female students, with no notable differences between the two. These findings highlight the importance of developing teaching methods that combine conventional elements with PjBL, as well as encouraging teachers to be more creative in utilizing learning media to make the teaching and learning process more engaging and effective for students.

Abstract

This study presents the analysis of the teacher-student interactions in online and offline EFL classes. The objectives of this study are to identify the teacher-student interactions and to analyze the implementation of the types of teacher-student interactions in EFL classes. It is descriptive qualitative research involving three English teachers and thirty students for each class at SMP Ihsaniyah Tegal as the participants of the research. The data were collected through direct classroom observation and videos taken in the class. The data were analyzed based on a FLINT System. The results in this study by observation from the three teachers showed that the type of ‘Asks Question’ from the teachers’ talks and ‘Student Response Open-Ended’ from the students’ talks had the highest percentage. It means that teachers wanted the students to be more active and braver to speak in English. The conclusion of this study indicated that the dominant types of teacher-student interactions in EFL classes are ‘Asks Question’ from the teachers’ talks and ‘Student Response Open-Ended’ from the students’ talks because the teacher tended to act as a facilitator that facilitated students to speak and be more active and as a resource providing the information needed by students. In addition, the students had more opportunities to speak and interact in EFL class by giving responses to the teachers’ talks.

Abstract

The role of self-assessment has grabbed much attention in recent years owing to the growing emphasis on independent learning to promote learners’ autonomy which becomes the trend of present-day EFL teaching. Learners' autonomy is an inevitability and has proved to positive effect on EFL learning outcomes. In the Indonesian EFL context, self-assessment used in speaking class seems attention-grabbing to be noticed, while in fact, the majority of Indonesian EFL teachers appear troublesome to provide a method to assess students’ speaking skills. This present study thus aimed to provide a theoretical framework for the effective self-assessment for the Indonesian EFL speaking classes by presenting alternatives of instruments that can be utilized for promoting learners’ autonomy. A descriptive qualitative approach was used in this study using library research through conducting a comprehensive search of the relevant theories and empirical findings related to the self-assessment instrument in EFL speaking class. The result of the analysis shows that several instrument models can be utilized for EFL speaking classes, namely self-assessment checklists and learning logs.

Abstract

The Merdeka Curriculum, recently introduced in Indonesia, aims to restore learning by prioritizing essential content and character development. While promising, its implementation in language education presents significant challenges and opportunities. This meta-synthetic analysis explores these aspects by synthesizing findings from various qualitative studies on the curriculum’s impact on language learning. Data were gathered from peer-reviewed journals, conference proceedings, and educational reports, focusing on studies conducted in diverse Indonesian educational settings. Key challenges identified include inconsistent teacher training, limited resources, and resistance to new pedagogical approaches. However, the curriculum also offers notable opportunities, such as enhanced student engagement, improved critical thinking, and the promotion of learner autonomy. Its emphasis on project-based learning and flexible teaching methods fosters a more interactive, student-centered environment. The study concludes that while the Merdeka Curriculum presents challenges, it also holds significant potential to enhance language education. Addressing these challenges requires comprehensive teacher training, adequate resource allocation, and continuous support for educators. The study recommends targeted professional development for teachers, increased investment in educational resources, and ongoing evaluation to ensure effective implementation. Policymakers should create supportive frameworks that enable schools to adapt the curriculum to their specific contexts, maximizing its benefits for language education.

Abstract

This study investigates the undergraduate perceptions over EFL speaking classes in six dimensions: general perceptions of speaking classes, anxiety, engagement and motivation, instructional strategies or methods, peer and teacher interactions, and assessment. This study employed a mixed-methods approach. The data were gathered from a 30-item Likert-scale survey questionnaire that was distributed to 40 undergraduate students of English Education Department, Faculty of teacher Training, Universitas pancasakti Tegal in the odd semester of the academic year 2024/2025. Using descriptive statistics and qualitative analysis, the findings indicate that students generally have  positive  views over the speaking classes attended, particularly valuing the instructional strategies like role plays and group discussions. However, anxiety stemming from fear of judgment and low self-confidence becomes a persistent challenge. In the dimension of engagement and motivation, the level was moderate as the activities linked to real-world situations and goal setting as a crucial part for maintaining interest. The study also highlights the importance of various instructional strategies to cope with varied learner needs, such as integrating technology-based tools like self-recorded videos and topic-specific vlogs. Moreover, peer and teacher interactions contributed a significant role to alleviate anxiety and to encourage communication, while the assessment approaches like peer and collaborative assessments were appreciated for self-reflecting and critical thinking. In general, this study emphasizes the needs  of creative and innovative instructional strategies, a supportive and inclusive learning environment,  and purposeful assessment to improve students’ speaking skills in EFL context of higher education. Future studies are recommended to  evaluate the long-term effects of these strategies over various cultural settings.
