Abstract

The manufacture of bioplastics by mixing PVA with starch, for example from sago, cassava, sweet potatoes, and potatoes and so on have been widely practiced. However, in some cases, blending of the polymers may not produce the desired properties due to the lack of miscibility between the mixed polymers. So that in making bioplastics a mixture of starch and PVA requires data support of the miscibility of raw materials for making bioplastics into water solvents. Miscibility can be predicted using UNIQUAC Functional - group Activity Coefficient (UNIFAC) method. The activity coefficient resulting from the UNIFAC calculation of the ternary system of starch, PVA and water shows that the activity coefficient of starch tends to increase with increasing starch composition, while the activity coefficient of PVA is not very stable. The water activity coefficient shows the opposite tendency. Temperature does not seem to have a significant effect on the composition of starch and PVA, from the calculation obtained the starch composition of 0.01045 - 0.15325 and PVA 0.38407 - 0.23860. Likewise, water shows that the heating temperature does not really affect the composition of the water. The calculation of the balance of the mixture is carried out to get the right composition for the mixture of starch, PVA and water to form a perfectly mixed mixture. The results of calculating the composition in equilibrium are shown in the ternary diagram. The diagram shows a single-phase graph, where if a mixture containing 2 components dissolves completely, it will form a single-phase region.

Abstract

The removal efficiency of adsorption is very dependent on the type of adsorbent. The use of hydroxyapatite as an adsorbent for synthetic dyes still needs to be developed. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of dyes and adsorbent mass on removal efficiency, and the best conditions in the adsorption process using of hydroxyapatite. Analysis was conducted by spectrophotometric and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) methods. The results showed that the mass of the adsorbent affects the removal efficiency of dyes. The best removal efficiency is at 0.5 g adsorbent mass for each dye. Adsorption capacity for methylene blue at 2 minutes was 1.96 mg/g with 26,12% of removal efficiency. Adsorption capacity for methyl red at 5 minutes was 6.68 mg/g with 89% of removal efficiency. Dye adsorption was not found during adsorption process of methyl orange. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) analysis showed that there was no adsorption of azo group on all spectra, indicated that there was not chemical reaction between the adsorbent and the adsorbate during the adsorption process.Key Words: adsorption, hydroxyapatite, methyl orange, methyl red, methylene blue.

Abstract

Zeolite 4A is a porous material that is widely used as an adsorbent, catalyst, membrane, ion exchanger, molecular sieve, etc. As a source of silica in the synthesis of zeolite 4A, silica from natural materials, biomass waste or chemicals has been used. In this research, silica extracted from Bengkalis beach sand (BBS) was used as raw material. The silica content in its oxide form, silicon oxide (SiO2) in BBS reaches 90%. The synthesis of zeolite 4A was carried out using a hydrothermal process, by varying the mole ratio of Si/Al from the reactant sodium silicate to sodium aluminate, namely 1.2:1; 1.4:1; 1.6:1 at reaction temperatures of 100, 110 and 120°C. Based on characterization using X-ray diffraction and an infrared spectrometer, the best conditions were obtained at a mole ratio reactant of 1.6, a reaction temperature of 100°C with a crystallinity percentage reaching 80.97%. Based on SEM-EDX analysis, the zeolite has an agglomerated morphology with a Si/Al ratio of around 1.09. The surface area, pore volume, and pore diameter of the synthesized zeolite were analyzed using a Brunauer-Emmet-Teller (BET) technique, respectively 81.844 m2/g, 0.039 cm3/g, and 3.07 nm.

Abstract

Indonesian commercial biodiesel products are unstable due to polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). The urea inclusion compound (UIC) method is used during the fractionation process on PUFA to enhance its quality. This study aims to determine the effect of temperature, fatty acid ester metal (FAME)/methanol ratio, and crystallization time on increasing the concentration of PUFA concentrates and to produce high-performance biodiesel products with an iodine indicator <30–40 g I2/100 g. According to the most recent research, the UCF phase product is obtained at a combination of temperature and crystallization time of 20 °C and 4 h, respectively. It has an iodine number of 44.01 and an oxidation stability of 18.61 h, which is close to the criteria for high-performance biodiesel (<30 –40 g I2/100 g). Meanwhile, the results of this study obtained a UCF phase product that has an iodine number of 34.18 and yields 86.57% is obtained at a combination of temperature and crystallization time of 20 °C and 6 hr and FAME-methanol ratio of 6, respectively, which is close to the criteria for high-performance biodiesel (<30 –40 g I2/100 g). The longer complexation time and temperature significantly affected the FAME fractionation of the UCF phase.

Abstract

The Assisted Village Service Program was carried out in Maini Darul Aman Village, Tebing Tinggi Barat District, Meranti Islands Regency. This activity aims to assist the community in overcoming the problem of sago pulp waste that has not been optimally utilized. During this time, sago pulp waste is disposed of in a shelter or along the river flow around the sago processing site, which has the potential to pollute the environment. As a solution, this program offers the production of biopellets from sago pulp, which can be used as an alternative to conventional fuels such as firewood and kerosene, and has the potential to become a business opportunity that can improve the family economy. This activity was carried out through several stages, including: socialization to the community about the importance of sago waste management, its impact, and the solutions offered; assistance in processing sago pulp into biomass biopellets; and assistance in using TLUD stoves fueled by sago pulp pellets. The final stage is coaching in marketing management as part of the future development of this program. The Bina Desa program is also integrated with UNRI students' Community Service Program (KKN) activities in 2024, which runs from July to the end of August 2024. Through this program, it is expected that the community can continue to develop the use of biopellets as fuel, both for household needs and industrial scale, such as use in boilers. In addition to protecting the environment, it is hoped that this program can also be a source of income that can improve the welfare of the community.
