Abstract

Age has an important role in the forensic identification process. Age estimation need to be done accurately in determining a person's age. The use of the Blenkin standard as a method of age estimation to the Javanese population produces accurate results. Chronological age estimation can be known through the dental age which is largely controlled by genetic factors. One of the genetic disorders that is associated as one of the causes of delayed development and eruption of teeth is Down Syndrome. The manifestation of Down syndrome in children's teeth is the delay in the timing and sequence of tooth eruption. The purpose of this study was to assess dental age estimates using the Blenkin standard (modified Demirjian method) in children with Down syndrome. This study is a cross-sectional study using children with Down Syndrome as research subjects, aged 10-16 years and willing to sign an informed consent for further panoramic x-rays. The results of the panoramic X-ray are then assessed using the Blenkin Standard for age estimation. The results showed that the dental age was different from the chronological age, which was 2.8 years for the sample of boys with Down Syndrome and 0.72 years for the sample of girls with Down Syndrome.

Abstract

There has been dramatic progression in the adhesion of dental adhesives and resins to enamel and dentin in the 40 years since Buonocore1 introduced the technique of etching enamel with phosphoric acid to improve adhesion to enamel. The first dental adhesives bonded resins to enamel only, with little or no dentin adhesion. Subsequent generations have dramatically improved bond strength to dentin and the sealing of dentin margins while retaining a strong bond to enamel. The widespread demand for, and use of, dental adhesives has fuelled an intensive development of better and easier dental adhesives in rapid succession; dentists have literally been inundated with successive “generations” of adhesive materials. There are seven generatios in bonding agent and have a different characteristics. This article discusses the progression of dental adhesives up to the last generation.

Abstract

Chronological and dental age are necessary aspects of dental age estimation. Both have a close relationship. Chronological age reflects the age of the tooth, and vice versa. Dental age estimation aims to provide the data in the field of dentistry with an accurate dental age range. In order to get the value of an accurate estimate of dental age, needed a method of estimation that has a standard deviation as low as possible and validated in a specific population groups of an individual. Demirjian method is a method frequently used in the dental age estimation. It uses the classification stages of the seven permanent teeth of mandibular left side using panoramic radiographs. Application of its method in some countries showed vary results so it needed adjustment. Blenkin standard is an adjustment of its method that changes the score of maturity stages 0-H to 1-8 and calculate the dental age by regression formula. The study aimed to assess the dental age estimation using Blenkin standard on children of Javanese ethnic in Jember region. This was an analytic descriptive study design. The samples were panoramic radiographs. The subjects were 70 samples consisting of 29 boys and 41 girls with an age range 6-12 years, and they were divided into 7 groups based on chronological age. Each tooth of the sample was calculated using Blenkin standard. The Blenkin standard showed non-significant difference with the age difference in the amount of approximately -0.22 years for boys and -0.03 years for girls (underestimation).

Abstract

Abstract

The mandible is the largest and strongest part of the craniofacial bone of the face. The mandible is the movable part of the facial bone. The mandible has two main structures, the body of the mandible and the ramus of the mandible. These two bone structures meet and form an angle called the gonial angle. The gonial angle will change with age because the mandible will undergo bone remodeling so that it can cause changes in the shape of the mandible. Changes that occur in the gonial angle can be evaluated by means of a panoramic radiograph. The growth and development of the gonial angle which is part of the mandibular bone can be influenced by several factors, namely genetics, race, sex, nutritional factors, hormones, masticatory muscle activity, lifestyle, use of drugs, and the environment. One of the genetic disorders in the process of growth and development of the mandible is Down Syndrome. Down Syndrome is characterized by a small upper jaw, a wide face, wide eye spacing, and a flat nose. The purpose of this study was to determine the size of the gonial angle of boys and girls suffering from Down Syndrome. This research is a cross sectional study with the research subjects are children with Down Syndrome aged 10-16 years. Panoramic X-rays were taken on all subjects and then the gonial angle was assessed. The results showed that the size of the gonial angle will decrease with increasing age. Girls with Down syndrome have a larger gonial angle than boys with Down syndrome.

Abstract

Forensic dentistry is a branch of medical science that deals with identifying and examining evidence through teeth and evaluating and presenting findings related to the oral cavity, jaws, teeth, and oral soft tissues to determine a person's identity. One of the identification methods that can be used in forensic odontology is lip prints. This study aims to see and examine the appearance of lip print patterns (cheiloscopy) based on age in Bojonegoro, East Java, Indonesia. This research was a descriptive observational study with a cross-sectional approach and used the classification of lip print patterns proposed by Suzuki & Tsuchihashi. The research sample consisted of 100 people taken from the age group of toddlers, children, adolescents, early adults, late adults, early elderly, late elderly, and seniors. The results of this study indicated that the most common lip print pattern was type II followed by type III and type I. There was diversity and variation in lip print patterns in each age group in Bojonegoro, East Java, Indonesia. Possibly due to racial variations and subject maturity. Keywords: forensic identification; lip print; cheiloscopy

Abstract

Lack of nutrient intake, especially calcium, can inhibit tooth development because calcium is the major component of the inorganic material that forms enamel and dentin. Caffeine in coffee can decrease calcium levels in the body. Arabica coffee has a very high caffeine content compared to other types of coffee. Excessive caffeine consumption can cause the inhibition of PTH secretion. As a result, the nursing mother's body cannot absorb calcium optimally. This makes the baby lack calcium intake which is used for the dental calcification process. This study analyzes radiographic images of tooth calcification of rat cubs during lactation period from rat mothers which consumed excess doses of Arabica coffee. Forty-eight breastfeeding rat mothers (n = 48) were divided into a control group and a treatment group. The control group consisted of 24 rat mothers that were given aquadest. The treatment group consisted of 24 nursing rat mothers, which were given coffee orally at a dose of 2.7 grams/200 grams/day. After the rat mothers gave birth (H + 1 to H + 18), every 4 rat cubs were euthanized, then the mandibular bones were X-rayed. Dental calcification was viewed and analyzed based on radiographic images. The teeth of rat cubs whose mothers consumed excess doses of Arabica coffee experienced a delay in the calcification stage compared to the teeth of normal rat cubs. Consumption of Arabica coffee by nursing mothers can cause a delay in the stage of dental calcification in rat cubs.

Abstract

Dental age estimation is one of the methods in the forensic dental examination. Dental age estimates are often carried out to complete the victim's identity using methods from experts such as Al-Qahtani. There have been many studies related to estimating tooth age using the Al-Qahtani method in normal humans but not in human subjects with special needs, such as children with down syndrome. This study aims to determine the estimated dental age using the Al-Qahtani method in children with down syndrome and to differentiate between chronological age and dental age in children with down syndrome. This research is a cross-sectional study. The research subjects were 13 children with down syndrome who attended special schools in the Jember Regency and met the sample criteria. Tooth age estimation is done by matching the results of panoramic radiographs with the Al-Qahtani Atlas. Data were analyzed using Shapiro-Wilk, Levene's Test, and paired sample T-Test. Estimating dental age using the Al-Qahtani method shows varying dental age values, and there is a delay in the dental age of boys compared to girls with down syndrome. The dental age of all research subjects was delayed from their chronological age. The dental age of children with Down syndrome estimated using the Al-Qahtani method shows an average value of 1 year 2.5 months, and there is a difference between dental age and chronological age with a difference of 1 year seven months. Therefore, adjustments need to be made if the Al-Qahtani method is applied to children with down syndrome.

Abstract

Gadingan Village is located on the coast of Jangkar District, Situbondo Regency. Some residents have difficulty accessing clean water. In 2020, Gadingan Village received PAMSIMAS grants including drilling for water sources, deep water pumps, and reservoirs. Currently, these facilities have not been fully utilized because the management agency has not yet been formed. The Gadingan Village Government encourages BUMDes as PAMSIMAS managers, but BUMDes does not yet have knowledge of network management and planning. People who use water do not believe in the quality of the water and the quantity of the water. The problem solving method used is the socialization of PHBS and PAMSIMAS to the community, as well as BUMDes assistance for PAMSIMAS management and PHBS awareness. The results obtained are increased public awareness in the use of clean water and the provision of sanitation and hygiene facilities.
