Abstract

Social interaction in housing and settlements affects the achievement of individual privacy need. Social interaction and privacy are two concepts that are equally important in achieving the sustainable housing concept. Moreover, between both must be balanced that daily living activities can be expressed equally. This paper is focused on the analysis of spatial privacy mechanisms in housing with communal culture, where there are high social values. This study is conducted in the natural setting by using qualitative design research. Data collection is used in several tactics. Firstly, using theoritical review, the model of privacy mechanism by Altman (1980) is used as the core of theory. Then, the theory is tested in specific case study, which is using non-participatory observation by observing the activities of participants in several times. Secondly, through participatory observation with in-depth interviews, the perceptions of privacy are explored to reveal specific expression of privacy mechanism in spatial arrangement. This result shows that cultural aspect is closely related to the participant's personality in managing his privacy needs. High social value in communal housing causes individuals to have verbal and non-verbal privacy mechanisms by considering community groups. Then, environmental mechanism obtained by creating a private space in social spaces.

Abstract

Domestic space is where basic human needs are accommodated and understood to the function and its inhabitants. The basic understanding of using domestic space is human activities as a system of activity and areas as a system of settings. However, visual representation techniques in architecture have led to the discriminatory practices towards visually impaired who have limitations on the sense of sight as a primary tool in spatial perception. Thus, studies are necessary to explore the use of domestic space by visually impaired. This paper aims to study the experience of people with visually impaired doing their activities and using a domestic architecture based on the cognition and percetption of their senses. This phenomenological research is studied at the natural setting of domestic housing from the perspective of women with visual impairment who live in Surabaya. The participants are chosen who have actively and independently carried their daily activities in domestic space. The results of this study show women with visual impairment have a specific system of activities and system of settings related to how the senses affect the spatial behavior of visually impaired in accommodating their activities. By doing so, they are able to compromise and create a friendly and accessible domestic environment.

Abstract

Social and economic conditions affect people’s behavior and preference for housing and the selection of housing area and its design. People with higher economic and social conditions will choose a better quality of housing and the environment. This decision also influences housing preference for apartment design. The quality of the apartment is influenced by a healthy environment, the use of energy that is efficient and can be recycled, using the eco-design approach, and basic facilities are provided. This study focuses on design-based research for designing an apartment building that suits the preferences of middle and upper occupants with an ecological approach. In this study, middle and upper occupant preference determines the shape of the facade design in buildings. In order to determine design parameters and criteria, this study uses a literature review, data analysis, and architectural precedent study. The result finds that several aspects are synthesized and selected as general design criteria apartment buildings. The important parameters in the design of the facade of the building are attractive façade design and emphasize the changing color through vegetation design inside and surrounding the building facades at each season. The building is designed minimalist architecture with a neutral color selection that is combined with natural colors such as wood and stone. Parts of apartment facilities can also be accessed by the occupants easily. Placement of vegetation evenly gives the impression of being close to nature and provides relaxation for each occupant of the apartment building.

Abstract

Architectural design through the concept of wayfinding for mental health facilities can support the patient's healing process, by providing designs that can influence cognitive behavior. The main problem is how to solve the spatial disorientation in the building. The healing architecture theories observe and harness the environmental elements as a factor in the design of a building. This information is applied to help the occupants in the process identifying their environment. The statement provides a basis for ideas of ideas regarding the architecture that provides information on the occupant, and it presents a hypothesis about architecture as a guide the user inside the building (wayfinding). The design proposal aims is to produce proposed structures designed as facilities to deal with mental health disorders according to the needs of the patient, and knowing what architectural elements can be used in using the concept of wayfinding as a result of research.

Abstract

The discussion starts with a question regarding why most of office buildings use the international style as their building expression. The first initial investigation is carried out by studying several precedents adapted from the rationalist and modern movement era. International style has architectural characteristics such as a simple form, pure structure, simple geometry, glass wall facade, and form follows function. This style mostly shows a lack of identity that does not respond to the local value and expression. The architectural buildings become placeless and do not represent the place with specific environmental responses and identity (contextual architecture). Additionally, an office building should be able to respond to the users’ activities and their identity/characters. This paper is based on the process of design project from design thinking, design research, and design process to conceptual design proposal. Design thinking is started by asking the question “what if” the new building design proposal reverses the international style’s facts through literature studies. The goals are to create the latest concepts that express their own character and image to portray both the users' characters and the location, which is human and environmentally friendly, using contextual analysis. Next, the design process includes explaining and arguing the process from proposing the design concept to building transformation. Some methods are used to determine the ‘big idea’ and design criteria and parameters, including the first principle, domain-to-domain transfer, and responding to site. The design proposal expresses the building heritage and its atmosphere, users’ characteristics, and has low energy efficiency. The design results highlight the aspect of "value of site" and “character of the building user” are essential to create the building image and identity.

Abstract

Human activities and behavior are reciprocally related to the dwelling environment. As the specific expression of culture, how human activities are carried out is related to how they understand and use the affordances of their environment. One of the primary domestic activities closely related to the culture is dining. Culture influences the dining habits of a community and plays a significant role in the form of dwelling architecture. This study explores how dining activities are carried out in urban housing in Indonesia and their relationship to the dwellings’ architectural forms. Taking Surabaya as a case study, this phenomenon was studied using a combine-strategy through questionnaires and in-depth semi-structured interviews. The participants are the young generation living in their parent’s dwellings with landed housing typology, with and without separate dining rooms. Household members and the dwelling size are not limited to examine how dining activities are conducted in each circumstance. The results show that Indonesian dining culture still influences dining activities in the dwelling. However, dining activities have begun to shift from social to personal activities. The development of a practical lifestyle in recent times has also caused dining activities to be carried out as a complement to other activities. Finally, these phenomena affect the settings and affordance attributes that accommodate dining activities in the dwelling, which understanding can be applied in designing residential architecture.

Abstract

Abstract

In several big cities in Indonesia, there are numerous cases of abandoned buildings due to delays in the construction process. Some of these buildings even remain abandoned and underused for an extended period. In line with this condition, cities experience a high level of urbanization that cause places tremendous pressure on urban spaces, especially green open spaces. This paper discusses Parasitic Architecture as an alternative design approach to address this issue. It proposes to use abandoned buildings as public facilities and is presented in sections. First, it reviews the concepts and principles of Parasitic Architecture, followed by observational studies using a contextual analysis to explore the context and function of abandoned buildings. The exploration results indicate a potential to apply Parasitic Architecture's concepts and principles in redesigning abandoned buildings and turning them into public facilities, particularly into green open spaces. In this context, the paper views Parasitic Architecture plays a vital role in providing innovative spatial and structural configurations to reorient the use of unused buildings for public functions. Keywords: abandoned building; contextual analysis; parasitic architecture; green open space AbstrakDi beberapa kota besar di Indonesia, banyak kasus bangunan terbengkalai akibat adanya kemunduran dalam proses konstruksi.
