Abstract

The present study aims to investigate young people's attitudes about foreign language learning in Northern Ireland, depending on diverse residential areas and household economic backgrounds. A cross-sectional design was used in this study to conduct descriptive research. The present study uses secondary data from the Access Research Knowledge (ARK) in Northern Ireland's Young Life and Time (YLT) survey, which has been performed yearly since 2003. The survey consists of 103 items that may be completed in two ways: online (15.5 percent) or on paper (84.5 percent). The emphasis of this study was on three variables: young people's home areas (urban and rural); household economic backgrounds; and their educational backgrounds (not very well-off, average, and very well-off); and the attitude to foreign language learning. The outcomes of this study revealed that disparities between urban and rural areas had a major impact on young people's views about foreign language programs. Compared to household prosperity, which did not give strong evidence of disparities in this study, the impact of this problem was considerably more prominent.

Abstract

This study tried to shed light on investigating the impact of picture series on Indonesian Junior High School EFL learners’ abilities in English descriptive writing. To fulfill the objective, quantitative method with quasi experimental design was employed. 50 Indonesian Junior High School EFL learners were selected out of 100 students in a private Junior High School in Banten province. The sample of this research was chosen based on the non-equivalent group design technique. Moreover, the chosen participants were divided into two equal groups: experimental group and control group. In collecting the data, the researchers conducted pre-test and post-test. The data, then, were analyzed by using t-test. The result of t-test revealed that revealed that the experimental group performed better than the control group. Finally, the implications of the findings and recommendations for future research were also discussed.

Abstract

This research reports the factors that trigger Foreign Language Speaking Anxiety as perceived by Indonesian EFL learners. The qualitative method was employed in this research. The participants of this research were the 33 Indonesian EFL learners from the class X IPS 3 of SMAN 1 Pandeglang, year academic 2019-2020. The initial process of collecting the data was by spreading a questionnaire known as Foreign Language Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) developed by Horwitz et al. (1986). Then it was followed by an in-depth interview for the ten students with high anxiety levels based on their FLCAS Score. The data was then analysed through three steps developed by Miles and Huberman (1994). The triangulation technique was used to strengthen this research's credibility. This research found that the factors that could trigger students' anxiety are divided into two. The first is teacher-related factors such as assertive teaching and the teacher's calling method. The second is student-related factors such as their negative view of English, being mocked by friends, fear of making mistakes, self-confidence, and inadequate support to practice English speaking. To reduce anxiety, students need to be exposed to the target language as often as possible and get used to it to improve their confidence in speaking English. In addition, the teacher should always be able to find a way to make an entertaining and less tense classroom environment.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of using the freewriting techniques on the writing ability of Indonesian junior high school students in producing descriptive texts. The study was conducted in a private school located in Banten province and involved 33 students who were selected through a total sampling. A quasi-experimental design was used, with pre- and post-tests serving as the research instruments. The tests were validated for content validity and inter-rater reliability. The results were analyzed using a t-test, which showed that the use of freewriting techniques had a significant positive effect on the writing ability of the students. The t-count (2.533) was higher than the t-table (2.039) at a significance level of 0.05, indicating that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected. The average score of the experimental class was higher than that of the control class, further emphasizing the positive impact of the freewriting techniques. These results suggest that the implementation of freewriting as a teaching techniques has the potential to enhance the writing ability of Indonesian junior high school students.

Abstract

This research was aimed to find out the effect of using chain game toward students’ speaking skill. The quasi-experimental with nonequivalent control group design was applied in this study. The seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 17 Kota Serang as the population. The samples were 30 students of VII C as the experimental class which is treated by using chain game and 30 students of VII A as the control class which is treated without using chain game. The data came from an oral test that was divided into two parts: pre-test and post-test. After collecting the data, the researchers used statistical computation to analyze the data. The result showed that there was significant effect of using chain game towards students’ speaking skill. It can also be seen from the calculation using an independent sample t test. The t test value was 3.966 and the significance value was 5% of t table df = 56, which was 1.673. So, t observed was higher than t table (3.966 > 1.673). Hence, this research could be used as a reference for teaching speaking with chain game since the use of chain game was effective for teaching speaking to the seventh grade students at SMP Negeri 17 Kota Serang. Keywords: chain game; students’ speaking skill; teaching speaking

Abstract

This study intended to figure out the level and the dominant motivation in learning English for sixth-semester students majoring in the Mathematics Education Program of Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University. This was viewed from three dimensions (Ideal L2 Self, Ought-to L2 Self, and L2 Learning Experience) of the L2 Motivational Self System framework of Dörnyei (2005, 2009). A quantitative research approach was employed through a survey study design to achieve the aim of the study. A total of 27 close-ended questionnaire items with a 5-point Likert Scale was administered to 79 participants. The main findings revealed that the motivation level of students held a moderate rate ( 3.53, SD = .870). Further description, 70% of students had a moderate level, and 30% reached a high level. Additionally, it found that the students were dominantly motivated by the L2 Learning Experience (= 3.67, SD = .756). It indicated that the motivation came from learning experiences and situations around students. While the Ideal L2 Self (= 3.63, SD = .878) was ranked in the second position, and Ought-to L2 Self (= 3.29, SD = .977) followed in the third position. Based on the research findings, some implications were recommended to be employed by EFL lecturers in enhancing students’ motivation, along with some directions for future researches in the area of motivational studies.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate gender-based differences in the use of refusal strategies among 60 intermediate Indonesian English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners. A qualitative approach was employed using a Discourse Completion Test (DCT) consisting of 12 scenarios. The refusal taxonomy proposed by Beebe et al. (1990) was utilized to analyze the collected data. Findings showed that both male and female participants most frequently used indirect strategies, with females exhibiting a slightly greater range of indirect strategies. Additionally, the interlocutor's status was found to influence the choice of refusal strategies used by participants. However, no significant gender-based differences were observed. The results suggest that EFL learners tend to express refusal in a polite and considerate manner to avoid causing offense. Future studies should consider incorporating diverse data collection instruments to achieve a more comprehensive understanding of pragmatic competency.
