Abstract

This research delves into the nuanced world of conversational implicature, exploring the implied meanings and flouts of Grice’s cooperative principle in the film "Lone Survivor" directed by Peter Berg. Utilizing a descriptive qualitative method, this study focuses on specific dialogues to identify instances of maxim flouts and to unravel their underlying implications. Grice’s theory provides the analytical framework for this investigation. Moreover, content analysis technique was used to analyze the data. The findings reveal multiple flouts of the maxims of quality, quantity, relevance, and manner, each leading to various implied meanings. These flouts not only shed light on the intricacies of human communication but also offer a unique perspective on character dynamics and narrative development within the film. Ultimately, this study enriches our understanding of conversational implicature in cinematic discourse, highlighting the complexities of communication in narrative storytelling and underscoring the importance of context in interpreting meaning

Abstract

The increasing volume of waste due to human activities causes the need for waste processing efforts. One method that can be used to treat waste is the combustion method using incinerator technology. By using incinerator technology, the volume of waste can be reduced by up to 97% and reduce the weight of waste by up to 70%. In addition, the work of this incinerator can be reused like ash to make bricks and heat that can be used as a power plant. The work of gas that overcomes the problem of environmental pollution and can directly support the improvement of free air. Therefore, we conducted online training activities through google meetings on solid waste processing using incinerator technology in Pulo Ampel Village, Banten Province. With this training, it can add insight and knowledge, especially the people of Pulo Ampel Village about waste processing using incinerator technology.

Abstract

This study investigates the treatment and role of children in research practices in Indonesia. Using a content analysis of six research-based articles, this study aims to understand the current state of involving children in research in Indonesia. The articles were selected based on three criteria: the focus of child research, the disciplines of research, and the availability of English language versions. The content analysis was carried out by systematically examining how each article addressed ethical considerations, participant involvement, and the research methodologies employed, particularly in relation to children as research participants. The findings show that researchers often fail to provide adequate treatment for child participants and tend to treat them similarly to adult participants throughout the research process. Additionally, children's involvement in research is not always voluntary, as evidenced by the lack of informed consent or consent from adult guardians, posing a risk to their safety and well-being. To address these issues, this study highlights the need for ethical guidelines that encompass specific aspects, such as obtaining genuine informed consent, safeguarding child welfare during research, and respecting children's unique vulnerabilities and rights. Existing frameworks like UNICEF's Ethical Research Involving Children (ERIC) guidelines or international research ethics codes could be adapted to the Indonesian context. Other relevant research institutions, such as the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education, universities, and research communities, must also establish these guidelines to ensure ethical standards are upheld in research with children.

Abstract

This study explores the role of animation film media in enhancing English vocabulary mastery among tenth-grade students at a public senior high school in Banten, Indonesia. Employing a quantitative experimental design, the research involved two groups: an experimental class and a control class, each consisting of 37 students selected through cluster random sampling. A set of 30 validated multiple-choice items was administered as both a pre-test and post-test to evaluate students’ vocabulary knowledge before and after the intervention. The findings revealed a significant improvement in the experimental group compared to the control group, as confirmed by statistical analysis. These results indicate that animation films can serve as effective instructional media for vocabulary acquisition by providing engaging and context-rich input. Thus, the use of animation films is recommended as an alternative strategy for teaching English vocabulary, supporting diverse learning styles and fostering active classroom participation.

Abstract

The role of English in Indonesia can be said quite special because English is the only compulsory foreign language included in secondary curriculums. However, the special status of English in national education is not accompanied by satisfactory results. Out-classroom experience (OCE) is believed to overcome this issue and has been applied successfully. Therefore, this study investigates the use of out-classroom experience in enhancing Indonesian EFL learners’ ability in speaking English. By conducting a case study approach, the research used triangulation data collection techniques consisting of classroom observation, interview, and speaking performance test. The study involved 40 undergraduate students from one of the public universities in Banten province as its subjects. The result showed that the use of OCE positively contributes to the development of students’ speaking development. Out-classroom activities can facilitate the learners to access or even create language exposures by themselves. This study provided some implications about using OCE for language teachers and educational practitioners. Keywords: Out-Classroom experiences, speaking, college students, EFL context

Abstract

The present study aims to investigate young people's attitudes about foreign language learning in Northern Ireland, depending on diverse residential areas and household economic backgrounds. A cross-sectional design was used in this study to conduct descriptive research. The present study uses secondary data from the Access Research Knowledge (ARK) in Northern Ireland's Young Life and Time (YLT) survey, which has been performed yearly since 2003. The survey consists of 103 items that may be completed in two ways: online (15.5 percent) or on paper (84.5 percent). The emphasis of this study was on three variables: young people's home areas (urban and rural); household economic backgrounds; and their educational backgrounds (not very well-off, average, and very well-off); and the attitude to foreign language learning. The outcomes of this study revealed that disparities between urban and rural areas had a major impact on young people's views about foreign language programs. Compared to household prosperity, which did not give strong evidence of disparities in this study, the impact of this problem was considerably more prominent.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of using the freewriting techniques on the writing ability of Indonesian junior high school students in producing descriptive texts. The study was conducted in a private school located in Banten province and involved 33 students who were selected through a total sampling. A quasi-experimental design was used, with pre- and post-tests serving as the research instruments. The tests were validated for content validity and inter-rater reliability. The results were analyzed using a t-test, which showed that the use of freewriting techniques had a significant positive effect on the writing ability of the students. The t-count (2.533) was higher than the t-table (2.039) at a significance level of 0.05, indicating that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected. The average score of the experimental class was higher than that of the control class, further emphasizing the positive impact of the freewriting techniques. These results suggest that the implementation of freewriting as a teaching techniques has the potential to enhance the writing ability of Indonesian junior high school students.

Abstract

The aim of this research conducted at one of the public universities in Banten was to investigate the perception of second-semester students in the English Department regarding the features of the Tophonetics application in improving their pronunciation of fricatives. Employing a phenomenological qualitative research design, the researchers selected five participants through purposive sampling, focusing on students who had experience using Tophonetics and were willing to participate. Data was collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews conducted via online Zoom meetings, utilizing three main open-ended questions to delve deeper into participants' experiences. The obtained data was analyzed using the Stevick-Colaizzi-Kenn technique, as described by Moustakas (1994). The analysis revealed four themes, including positive perception, negative perception, the features of Tophonetics, and the obstacles of using Tophonetics. The findings suggest that students in the English Department perceive Tophonetics positively in terms of improving their pronunciation of fricative sounds, highlighting the potential benefits of integrating this application into language teaching and learning practices.
