Abstract

Changes in family structure due to divorce and conflict have increased the number of adolescents living in broken homes. This condition not only has an impact on the social aspect, but also on the emotional development of adolescents. This study aims to examine the relationship between family functioning and emotional regulation of broken home adolescents. The study used a correlational quantitative approach involving 135 broken home adolescents  as research subjects. Data collection was carried out using the family functioning scale and the emotion regulation scale. The results of data analysis with the Pearson product moment correlation technique show that there is a significant positive relationship between family functioning and emotion regulation ability, where the better the functioning of the family, the better the ability of adolescents to manage emotions. In contrast, families that do not function optimally tend to be associated with a teen's low ability to manage emotions. These findings confirm the importance of the role of the family in supporting adolescent emotional development and can be the basis for the development of psychological interventions and educational programs that focus on strengthening family function and emotion regulation skills.

Abstract

Premarital sexual behavior among adolescents has become an important issue due to its potential psychological, social, and educational impacts. One factor that may reduce adolescents’ involvement in risky sexual behavior is father involvement, which includes emotional support, supervision, communication, and active participation in children’s development. This study aimed to examine the relationship between father involvement and premarital sexual behavior among adolescents at Immanuel Christian Senior High School in Medan City. This research employed a quantitative correlational design. The participants consisted of 105 male and female students who were currently involved in dating relationships and were selected using purposive sampling techniques. Data were collected through Likert-type scales, including a 39-item premarital sexual behavior scale and a 40-item father involvement scale. Data analysis was conducted using Pearson Product-Moment correlation with the assistance of IBM SPSS Statistics version 26. The results showed a significant negative relationship between father involvement and premarital sexual behavior, with a correlation coefficient of r = -0.239 and a significance value of p = 0.014 (p < 0.05). These findings indicate that adolescents who experience higher levels of father involvement tend to show lower engagement in premarital sexual behavior. Low father involvement is associated with a greater tendency toward risky sexual behavior among adolescents. Father involvement contributes to adolescents’ behavioral regulation through guidance, supervision, and emotional closeness. In conclusion, father involvement plays an important protective role in reducing premarital sexual behavior among adolescents. This study highlights the importance of strengthening fathers’ active participation in adolescent development.

Abstract

Academic stress among adolescents is a growing concern, with parenting style identified as one of its key external determinants. This study examined the effects of authoritarian, authoritative, and permissive parenting styles on academic stress among high school students in Medan. A quantitative approach with a correlational design and multiple linear regression analysis was employed. Participants were 198 students selected from a population of 462 students at Perguruan Buddhis Bodhicitta Medan using disproportionate stratified random sampling. Data were collected using a parenting style scale based on Baumrind's theory and an academic stress scale based on Lazarus and Folkman's theory, both demonstrating adequate validity and reliability. The results showed that parenting styles simultaneously had a significant effect on academic stress (F = 63.020; p < 0.05; Adjusted R² = 0.486). Partially, authoritarian and permissive parenting styles had a positive and significant effect, whereas authoritative parenting showed no significant effect. These findings suggest that controlling and autonomy-restrictive parenting tends to exacerbate adolescent academic stress, while warm and responsive parenting functions as a protective factor. This study underscores the critical role of parenting practices in shaping adolescents coping capacity toward academic demands.
