Abstract

During adolescence, individuals experience significant physical growth and development with changes in body composition that can affect their physical activity and learning motivation. This study aims to determine the effect of body mass index (BMI) and physical activity (PA) on the learning motivation of physical education students aged 15-17 years in different schools. This research design uses a quantitative descriptive approach. The sample consisted of 202 male and female at high-school Students 1 Sukoharjo, Central Java, aged 15 to 17 years, selected through purposive sampling. The instruments used in the research were BMI variables, PA, and learning motivation. Using multinomial logistic regression analysis for data analysis it is possible to find physical education students' learning motivation in a different category from the BMI category and PA category based on the p-value (0.05). The results of the descriptive data found that the most BMI research samples were in the normal category with 45.0%, then PA was in the moderate category with 49.5% doing moderate PA, and the learning motivation of physical education students was in the high category with 42.6%. multinomial logistic regression analysis showed, 1) there was no effect of BMI categories on different learning motivations (p-value: 0.920); 2) there is an effect of PA categories on physical education students' learning motivation (p-value: 0.009); 3) there is a significant effect between the categories of BMI and PA categories on the learning motivation of different physical education students (p-value: 0.000). A higher percentage of BMI is associated with decreased PA. In addition, low learning motivation was observed among students with low levels of PA and a higher percentage of BMI in the overweight category.

Abstract

Osteoporosis increases fracture risk and reduces quality of life in menopausal women. Although physical activity, such as walking and bone joint exercise, is known to help maintain bone health, its effectiveness needs further examination. The aim of this study was to analyze the effects of physical activity, in particular walking and bone joint exercise, on enhancing bone remodeling in menopausal women. A randomized controlled trial was conducted among menopausal women and allocated into three groups: walking, bone joint exercise, and control groups. The intervention was provided for eight weeks, with the outcomes measured before and after the intervention. The study assessed five bone remodeling biomarkers: estrogen, parathyroid hormone (PTH), receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-β ligand (RANKL), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), and bone mineral density (BMD). The paired sample student t-test and ANOVA were used to assess the effects of the interventions. The results indicated that, compared to pre-intervention, both walking and bone joint exercise significantly increased the estrogen (p=0.026 and p=0.023, respectively), decreased RANKL (p=0.019 and p=0.002, respectively), decreased PTH levels (p=0.022 and p=0.048, respectively) and increased the BMD scores (p=0.001 and p<0.001, respectively). In the control group, none of the remodeling biomarkers significantly changed except the mean level of TNF-α, which was increased significantly (p=0.001). This study highlights that structured exercise, such as walking and bone joint exercise, can significantly enhance bone remodeling markers in menopausal women. Therefore, implementing such physical activities into management may provide benefits to menopausal women.

Abstract

Eccentric exercise often leads to oxidative stress, inflammation, and muscle damage that impair athletic performance. To counter these adverse effects, clove flower extract (Syzygium aromaticum) offers promising potential as a natural remedy to promote muscle repair with its potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of clove flower extract administration timing on oxidative stress and inflammatory responses in skeletal muscle damage induced by acute eccentric exercise in mice. This study used a post-test-only control group design, involving 35 male mice (Mus musculus, Balb/c) randomly divided into five groups: a healthy control group (HC) with no exercise and no treatment, a negative control group (NC) with exercise but no treatment, and three treatment groups: T1, T2, and T3 (clove flower extract 24 hours before exercise, immediately after exercise, and 24 hours after exercise, respectively). The treatment groups received a single dose of clove flower extract (500 mg/kg body weight). The skeletal muscle damage of mice was collected for the NADPH oxidase (NOX) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities using spectrophotometry, and toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) and interleukin-8 (IL-8) measurements using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Moreover, the skeletal muscle damage was analyzed through the histopathological method. Data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by Fisher's least significant difference (LSD) tests as a post hoc test. The result showed that clove flower extract significantly reduced NOX activity (p=0.049) and IL-8 levels (p=0.032), and increased SOD activity (p=0.001) while not significantly affecting the TLR4 levels (p=0.532). Moreover, the results showed a significant reduction in muscle damage (p=0.001). The study highlights that the administration of clove flower extract (500mg/kg bw) can be given 24 hours before, immediately after exercise, or 24 hours after exercise to prevent muscle damage.

Abstract

Background: Overtraining is commonly associated with elevated oxidative stress, inflammatory responses, and structural damage to muscle fibers, all of which contribute to a decline in physical performance. This study aimed to assess the impact of aerobic exercise on biomarkers including malondialdehyde (MDA), interleukin-6 (IL-6), caspase-3, nitric oxide (NO), superoxide dismutase (SOD), as well as the integrity of the sarcolemma. Methods: A six-week experimental study was conducted using 24 rats, which were randomly divided into three groups (n = 8 per group): a negative control group (no treatment), an aerobic exercise group, and a high-intensity interval training (HIIT) group. The levels of biochemical markers, including malondialdehyde (MDA), interleukin-6 (IL-6), nitric oxide (NO), and superoxide dismutase (SOD), were measured using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) technique. Additionally, the expression of caspase-3 was determined through immunohistochemical (IHC) analysis. Muscle tissue damage was evaluated by means of histopathological examination. The data were analyzed using a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by the Mann-Whitney post hoc test to assess differences between groups. Results: The findings indicated that aerobic exercise did not result in a statistically significant reduction in malondialdehyde (MDA) (p = 0.833), interleukin-6 (IL-6) (p = 0.800), nitric oxide (NO) (p = 0.791), or superoxide dismutase (SOD) (p = 0.520) levels. Nevertheless, the aerobic exercise group exhibited a significantly lower expression of caspase-3 compared to the other groups (p = 0.023). Furthermore, aerobic exercise was associated with a significant reduction in muscle tissue damage (p = 0.001). Conclusion: The findings of this study indicate that both aerobic exercise and high-intensity interval training (HIIT) have the potential to be utilized as therapeutic approaches for mitigating exercise-induced muscle damage, primarily through their positive influence on sarcolemma stability. However, additional clinical investigations are necessary to confirm these results and establish their relevance for clinical implementation.

Abstract

Background: Knee injury is a common sports injury, and exercise therapy can be guided by functional and biological tests to assess healing and readiness to return to sport. This study aimed to develop a test battery to identify the most predictive functional test in determining the success of an exercise therapy program for sports injury. Methods: A test construction methodology was used, incorporating 8 field test instruments and TGF-β1 as a biological marker. Statistical methods, including multiple correlation and Wherry Doolittle test selection, were applied to develop a functional test model supporting post-injury sports therapy. Results: This study found no significant correlation between TGF-β1 and the single leg stance (p=0.160), single leg calf raise (p=0.902), vertical jump (p=0.344), shuttle run (p=0.794), and hop tests (p=0.555). However, significant correlations were found with the sit and reach test (p<0.001; r=0.471) and hexagonal agility test (p=0.019; r=-0.318). Multivariate linear regression showed that the single leg stance, sit and reach, and hexagonal agility tests were predictors of TGF-β1, with the single leg stance and sit and reach tests explaining 23% of its variance. Conclusion: Test battery arrangement for functional tests that were considered predictive include single leg stance and sit and reach tests, with low correlation values, which two tests in the form of single leg balance and sit and reach tests have a relationship with tissue healing. Additionally, several other tests were designed to determine the ability of athletes to RTS.

Abstract

Background: Overtraining can elevate reactive oxygen species (ROS), suppress endogenous antioxidant activity, and trigger systemic inflammation. Monitoring oxidative stress and inflammation is essential to prevent muscle damage. This study aimed to examine the effects of an overtraining protocol on oxidative stress and inflammatory markers MDA, IL-6, NO, and SOD in male Wistar rats. Methods: The experimental was conducted over two weeks using male Wistar rats at the Bioscience Institute Laboratory, Universitas Brawijaya, Malang, Indonesia as a preliminary study. Three rats were examined to assess the effects of overtraining on MDA, IL-6, NO, and SOD levels. Observations were made one day after overtraining protocol for the intervention group value (KP) and six weeks after overtraining for the control group value (K1). Results: Three male rats underwent an overtraining protocol, and blood samples were collected one day post-overtraining (KP) to assess MDA, IL-6, NO, and SOD levels. The mean values at KP were MDA: 370.3 ± 10.3, IL-6: 5.9 ± 0.7, NO: 61.0 ± 8.4, and SOD: 0.05 ± 0.03. At six weeks post-overtraining (K1), MDA (192.8 ± 10.3), IL-6 (3.3 ± 1.9), and NO (41.7 ± 21.6) levels were lower, while SOD (0.3 ± 0.2) was higher compared to KP. Conclusion: Overtraining can elevate ROS and inflammatory responses, as indicated by increased MDA, IL-6 levels, and NO, along with reduced SOD expression.
