Abstract

This paper shows the commodification process that occurs in Kampung Adat Sijunjung to support the development of rural tourism. The commodification process can be seen in the use of Rumah Gadang as a homestay place for guests. Rumah Gadang for the Minangkabau people is not just a place to live but a space and cultural symbol. So that if it is used as a homestay it will cause a dilemma, on the one hand Rumah Gadang needs to be maintained as a distinctive Minangkabau cultural monument and on the other hand the tourism aspect can have an economic impact on the people of Sijunjung. The dualism of Rumah Gadang as a cultural product and tourism product is what results in commodification to develop tourism in rural areas. The method used was thorough observation of Rumah Gadang and interviewing 15 residents and Ninik Mamak (traditional ruler) as members of the tribe that owns Rumah Gadang. In addition, Rumah Gadang continues to function as a place and space for social and cultural activities of the Sijunjung community. So that the values and norms that exist in Rumah Gadang as a symbol of Minangkabau culture continue to run and through homestays, the Sijunjung community can obtain additional economic benefits from the tourism sector.

Abstract

This research seeks to elucidate the conflict over PT PHP I's Cultivation Rights Title (HGU), claimed as customary land by some communities in Nagari Kapa. It aims to detail the customary elements that legitimized the 1997 land rights transfer to the West Pasaman Regency government. The issue stems from internal conflicts among Nagari Kapa's customary elites, impacting PT PHP I as the HGU holder. The disputed area encompasses 315 hectares of PT PHP I's land, occupied by the community since 2020. Using ethnographic methods, the study explores community and tribal leaders' (Ninik Mamak) perspectives on customs and land status. Interviews were conducted with 10 groups of tenant farmers on PT PHP I's core HGU land and 5 Ninik Mamak. Findings reveal that land status, under the Babingkah Adat system, is determined by the Pucuk Adat and transferred according to Adat Diisi Limbago Dituang and Siliah Jariah customary requirements. However, some community members oppose this mechanism, occupying land designated as PT PHP I's HGU, and thus, they collectively claim the land as customary territory of the Nagari Kapa community.

Abstract

Abstract

Tourism is a set of ‘machines’ that can drive the economy for regions that have tourist destinations. At present, tourism is developing according to the demands of the global market which tries to combine culture and tourism. This process is called commodification, which essentially leads to the transformation of cultural values into goods or services that have exchange value in the tourism industry. The Sarugo Village tourism area is included in the KPPK (Regency Tourism Potential Area) in Gunuang Omeh District which has cultural, religious, ecological and historical attractions. So, the development of community-based cultural tourism. This paper aims to explain the mix between culture and tourism in Sarugo Village so as to show the positive and negative effects on the culture itself or even make the culture survive. Through an ethnographic approach and data collection by observation and in-depth interviews with 15 informants, the results show that cultural aspects that are an important element in the lives of people in Sarugo Village are modified into tourism products. Rumah Gonjong is transformed into a homestay to accommodate overnight guests. This shows that the private sphere (Rumah Gonjong) turns into a public sphere in the tourism industry with the management of the local community itself. Thus, the managers of the Gonjong House, which initially only made it a place to stay, have now provided an economic increase. Therefore, the Gonjong House is currently maintained and the consequences of the tourism industry make the cultural survival of the Sarugo Village community.

Abstract

In Nagari Sungai Pinang, Pesisir Selatan Regency, West Sumatra Province, from 2016 to 2021, there was a decline in both the extent and quality of Mangrove areas. In response to this, a conservation group was initiated by a local community member in 2016. This study aims to understand the perceptions of the Nagari Sungai Pinang community towards Mangrove forest conservation by examining their knowledge and utilization of mangroves. The researchers employed a qualitative case study method, utilizing data collection techniques such as observation, participant observation, in-depth interviews, literature review, and documentation. The results indicate that the utilization of Mangrove plants by the community in Nagari Sungai Pinang is minimal and involves personal, subsistence, and commercial use, leading to a low intensity of exploitation. Consequently, the efforts by the community to independently maintain the Mangrove forests are minimal. This also contributes to the community's lack of interest in participating in conservation activities, compounded by their limited knowledge and understanding of the role of Mangrove forests in protecting ecosystems. As a result, the community's perceptions are divided into two groups: those who support and those who are indifferent to Mangrove forest conservation in Nagari Sungai Pinang. These differing perceptions are related to their livelihoods, residential locations, knowledge of Mangrove functions, and daily interactions with mangroves.

Abstract

This study examines the Mentawai struggle to perform their cultural identity in the middle of hegemonic influence development and policies which contradicts their cultural identity and which gives rise to a cultural crisis. Critical anthropology's view shows that humans have the potential to create creativity and customisation. However, the Mentawai are limited and suppressed by social factors, cultural conditions, and exploited by the authorities. It means that the reality as Mentawai is not created by nature, but by humans, who have the power to manipulate the condition and patent the meaning that suits his own mind that is full of conflict, illusion, and distortion. Mentawai are in a ‘false consciousness’ that modernisation helps them to see the better world and have consciously stuttered (cultural backwardness) from that subconscious condition. Culture is deliberately clashed with modernisation in various elements of life such as in customs, language, food, and lifestyle. Furthermore, the generalization of development programmes also intervenes to sharpen the domination to narrow down the socio-cultural life of the Mentawai. However, they are not rigid. They practice cultural tactics (cultural meaning) in order to keep up with modernisation. They also consider modernisation and globalization as ‘interaction spaces’ in which the contestation of various elements of human life take place.

Abstract

The Suku Anak Dalam (SAD) Batin Sembilan living in the Hutan Harapan area of Jambi Province has experienced socio-cultural dynamics resulting from the impacts of development and ecological changes of forest. The various interventions of extractive companies and others (Orang Terang) require them to learn new things that are absent in their knowledge system and traditional way of life. The present study is based on anthropological studies that rely on qualitative methods with a cultural ecology perspective aiming to describe the adaptive actions of SAD Batin Sembilan in responding to changes in their physical and socio-cultural environment as well as the reconstruction of their cognitive. The findings show that although they have long been in contact with people from outside the community, suggesting an influence on the way of thinking, living, and fulfilling their needs or livelihood, the SAD community seems to have preserved their socio-cultural identity closely associated with life dependence on forest. This study sheds new light on the actual picture of the SAD Batin Sembilan community in responding to changes.

Abstract

This paper discusses the conflict that occurred on land owned by PT. PHP I, which was occupied by the Nagari Kapa community as their customary land. The community requested land rights in order to gain access to the land based on the Babingkah Adat customary system. Therefore, this paper analyses the nature of customary provisions in land ownership and the community's actual motives for occupying PT. PHP I's land. Using critical ethnography approach, it analyses social relations, social inequality, and capitalist hegemony in the palm oil industry. Data was collected using participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and text analysis of the perspectives of the community, traditional leaders, and the legality of land use. The study shows that the transfer of land by traditional leaders (ninik mamak) Nagari Kapa to the state (West Pasaman government) in 1997 was a statement that contained political, legal, and customary elements. Therefore, the customary framework cannot be accessed and cannot be fully applied. The customary framework cannot be accessed and cannot be fully applied. The occupation of land by the Nagari Kapa community represents their resistance and resilience to defend their land. They are not only fighting and reclaiming the land taken by PT. PHP I, but also opposing the arbitrary actions of their ninik mamak, who unilaterally handed over the land to another party. Thus, the social awareness of occupying PHP I's land is a form of aspiration and resistance by the community to reclaim their land rights..

Abstract

This paper explains the agreement to hand over customary land as HGU for PT AMP Plantation which has conflict vulnerability. In 1994, the process of handing over customary land by Ninik Mamak Nagari Tiku Limo Jorong to the local government and made HGU by PT AMP Plantation for oil palm plantations. In the process there is an agreement agreed upon, namely the issue of the division of core land (70%) and plasma (30%) and compensation money (siliah jariah). So, the community demanded that this be realised. But over time, conflicts occurred both internally in the community and with the company. The approach uses descriptive methods with data collection in-depth interviews and observations. Infrorman was drawn using mixed techniques, namely purpose sampling and snowball. The results show that the conflict that occurred has been completed with a long process from 2000 until now. However, it is highly susceptible to future conflicts. The long conflict was influenced by two factors, which were the dualism factor of Ninik Mamak and the delay of the company to find a new agreement. Therefore, the balance made from the agreement letter is very vulnerable, because customary land is still bound to the community and the company even though it has become HGU.
