Abstract

Abstract

The Baduy tribe is an indigenous community in Banten Province divided into two main groups, namely Inner Baduy and Outer Baduy, with varying levels of adherence to customary law and exposure to modernization. This article examines various government policies that affect the survival and identity of the Baduy tribe. These policies include the recognition of customary rights through Lebak Regency Regulation No. 32 of 2001, the designation of Kanekes Village as customary land, and the designation of the Baduy area as a tourist destination. Although these policies aim to protect the rights and preserve the culture of the Baduy, their implementation has created a dilemma. On the one hand, tourism opens up new economic opportunities and raises cultural awareness. On the other hand, the influx of tourists triggers significant social, cultural, economic, and environmental changes, especially among the Outer Baduy, including the adoption of modern technology, shifts in consumption patterns, and increased environmental pollution. Thus, preservation policies have ironically become drivers of change that undermine the Baduy community's original identity.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the national interests of the United Kingdom and Indonesia within the MENTARI program, utilizing Axelrod and Keohane's "Shadow of the Future" dimension as an analytical framework. Authors employ qualitative methods, including interviews and document analysis, The findings indicate a shared recognition by both nations that the global energy landscape will be predominantly shaped by renewable sources. Therefore, both countries established a partnership to speed up the energy transition and reduce their dependence on environmentally harmful fossil fuels, a major driver of climate change. The analysis reveals that the UK's interests align with its obligation as a developed country under the Paris Agreement to provide climate finance, coupled with its strategic ambition to secure a market share in Indonesia's renewable energy sector to bolster its position as a global leader in the field. Conversely, Indonesia's primary interest lies in attracting foreign investment to catalyse its domestic renewable energy development and accelerate its national energy transition process.

Abstract

In 2016, China built its first overseas military base in Djibouti, East Africa. The base was established to prevent the rise of Somali pirates and piracy in the Gulf of Aden and the waters of Somalia. However, China was not the only country that had built military bases in the region. Previously, the United States, France, Italy, and Japan had also established military bases in the area. This article will explain China's motives for building a military base in Djibouti in relation to other countries, aside from preventing piracy. In this article, the authors use the concepts of balance of power and national interests to analyze it. The authors use qualitative research methods and secondary data collection techniques from relevant books, journal articles, and websites. The research results show that China's military base estabishment is an effort to soft balance against the United States' power in Djibouti. In addition, China also has economic motives, which is to facilitate and secure China's international trade, considering the location of the Chinese base is close to the Doraleh port, gateway to trade with Africa and Europe.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the influence of Matteo Salvini's idiosyncratic factors in the output of anti-migrant policies, so called Salvini Decree in Italy after the winning of the 2018 general election. According to Matteo Salvini, the migrant issue is a threat to Italy's national identity. The authors analyze by using the idiosyncratic concept of leaders in the foreign policy output adopted by a country.. The findings in this research indicate that there is an influence of Matteo Salvini's perception and personality which has an impact on the foreign policy adopted by Italy in 2018. Aggressive foreign policy and excluding international law from the 1951 Refugee Convention and the Common European Asylum System (CEAS) regarding migrant issues is an indication of the perception elite in breaking through political boundaries. His high level of nationalism and ability to control events and be actively involved in policy making allows Salvini to act dominantly and tends to delegate less power to maintain his power through the anti-refugee terms promoted by Salvini.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic emerged as a global health crisis that revealed China's political strategies in intricate ways. This study examines the political aspects of China's response to the outbreak, focusing on its information management, domestic policies, and international diplomacy. By analyzing narratives surrounding the virus's origins and its global spread, the research also assessed the pandemic's impact on Indo-China relations[1] across diplomatic and economic dimensions. The pandemic period also coincided with a sharp deterioration in bilateral trust between India and China, highlighted by the Galwan Valley clash and subsequent tensions along the Line of Actual Control, which deepened strategic mistrust and hardened India’s policy stance. The findings illuminate how political maneuvering has redefined China's geopolitical standing during this crisis, providing insights into the evolving landscape of Indo-Pacific relations. By uncovering these complexities, this study contributes to a nuanced understanding of health geopolitics and the underlying power dynamics.

Abstract

Known as a maritime country, Indonesia is still unable to meet its need of salts, especially industrial salts. As a result, Indonesia has to import salts from various countries with an increasingly higher volume each year. Using theory of two-level games, authors found that the salt importing policy cannot be separated from international pressures so that Indonesia undertakes trade liberalization on salt sector. The international pressure emanated from three global regimes namely WTO, IMF and FTA. The three global regimes basically require Indonesia to liberalize its domestic market by removing tariff and non-tariff trade barriers in various sectors including salt. This paper will explain the mechanism and scheme of the three global regimes in liberalizing Indonesia's trade on salt sector.

Abstract

The study will discuss the protection of Indonesia's maritime sovereignty in Natuna using the theory of smart power, linkage issues, and national security. First, smart power explains the use of power; the Indonesian government intelligently combines various decisions and resources to gain China's legitimacy regarding national interests in Natuna. Second, the Linkage Issues theory identifies the use of policies outside the defence sector that impact China. Third, national security explains various efforts to protect Indonesia's sovereignty in various fields, such as trade and politics. The research method is qualitative explanatory as a case study analysis to explain Indonesia's strategy to protect the sovereign territory in Natuna. This research shows Indonesia as a great country with a higher bargaining position that tries to protect its sovereign territory. The article proves that Indonesia has a strong bargaining position in protecting the Natuna region by using various strategic policies that impact China, even though China is more assertive in the political and military aspects.
