Abstract

Fine motor skills are essential for early childhood development because they support children's ability to perform activities requiring finger coordination, hand flexibility, and hand-eye coordination. Preliminary observations at UPTD TK Negeri Cut Meutia revealed that the fine motor skills of children aged 5–6 years had not yet reached the expected developmental level, with only 42% of children achieving the predetermined mastery criteria. Therefore, an effective learning strategy was needed to improve children's fine motor development. This study aimed to improve the fine motor skills of children aged 5–6 years through hand puppet-assisted role-play activities. The study employed Classroom Action Research (CAR) using the Kemmis and McTaggart model, consisting of two cycles. The participants were 10 children in Group B at UPTD TK Negeri Cut Meutia. Data were collected through observation sheets, field notes, and documentation, and were analyzed descriptively using percentage calculations. The findings showed a significant improvement in children's fine motor skills throughout the research cycles. Learning mastery increased from 42% in the pre-cycle stage to 65% in Cycle I and reached 80% in Cycle II. Children demonstrated better finger coordination, improved hand flexibility, and greater participation in learning activities involving storytelling and role-play. The study concludes that hand puppet-assisted role-play activities effectively improve the fine motor skills of children aged 5–6 years. The use of hand puppet media provides meaningful and enjoyable learning experiences that support children's motor development and active engagement in classroom activities.

Abstract

The family plays a central role in shaping children’s character through daily interaction, role modelling, communication, and discipline. However, limited parental knowledge of empathetic communication, emotional regulation, positive reinforcement, and nonviolent discipline may reduce the effectiveness of parenting practices. This lecturer-led community service program aimed to strengthen the knowledge and practical skills of parents and primary caregivers in Kuta Baro Village in implementing positive parenting strategies to support children’s character development. The program involved 30 participants and employed a participatory educational approach consisting of needs assessment, interactive presentations, group discussions, case-based learning, parent–child communication simulations, and reflection on existing parenting practices. The materials focused on child development, effective family communication, parental emotional regulation, positive behavioural reinforcement, role modelling, and consistent nonviolent discipline. Program evaluation was conducted using pre- and post-activity assessments, participant observation, and analysis of parenting action plans. The mean assessment score increased from 61.8 before the program to 85.6 after the program, indicating a 38.5% improvement in participants’ understanding. Participants also demonstrated greater ability to identify less adaptive parenting practices, formulate constructive responses to children’s behaviour, apply logical consequences, and develop parenting strategies appropriate to their family contexts. The program further increased participants’ awareness of the importance of consistency, emotional responsiveness, and parental example in fostering discipline, independence, responsibility, empathy, and social concern. These findings demonstrate that participatory positive parenting education can serve as an effective community empowerment strategy for strengthening parental capacity and supporting children’s character development in Kuta Baro Village. Continuous mentoring and a parent learning forum are recommended to sustain the program’s outcomes.

Abstract

This article aims to examine the ethnopedagogy of coconut shell stilts as a traditional game-based learning model in elementary education. The background of this study is based on the decreasing physical play experience of children, the dominance of passive, gadget-based activities, and the suboptimal use of traditional games in Physical Education, Sports, and Health learning in elementary schools. In fact, traditional games have pedagogical potential in developing motor skills, creativity, collaboration, character, and cultural identity of students. Coconut shell stilts were chosen because they are simple, inexpensive, based on natural materials, and contain the values of balance, courage, cooperation, sportsmanship, and love for local culture. This article uses a descriptive qualitative method with a conceptual study approach through literature review and analysis of learning model designs. Data were reviewed from literature on ethnopedagogy, traditional games, physical education, children's motor development, project-based learning, and character education. The results of the study indicate that coconut shell stilts can be developed into a one-semester learning model through the stages of cultural exploration, tool making, basic movement training, game variation development, class festivals, and authentic assessment. This model can develop gross motor skills, creativity, mutual cooperation, responsibility, sportsmanship, courage, and pride in local culture. Thus, stilt-based ethnopedagogy can be a contextual, affordable, inclusive, and meaningful learning alternative in elementary education.

Abstract

This article aims to analyze the role of traditional sports as a medium for character formation in elementary school children from the perspective of educational philosophy. The focus of the study is directed at the relationship between physical activity, local wisdom, playing experience, and the internalization of character values. This research uses a qualitative approach with a literature study design and conceptual-philosophical analysis. Data were obtained from journal articles, educational theory books, curriculum documents, and policy sources relevant to physical education, traditional sports, ethnopedagogy, and character education. The analysis was carried out through the stages of source reduction, thematic coding, value categorization, and philosophical synthesis. The results of the study indicate that traditional sports have pedagogical power because they unite the dimensions of body, feeling, reason, sociality, and culture. The literature synthesis revealed five dominant themes, namely character formation (35.0%), local wisdom and culture (22.5%), participation and motor skills (17.5%), pedagogical models (15.0%), and curriculum support (10.0%). The most prominent character values include cooperation/mutual assistance (22.5%), discipline (17.5%), honesty/sportsmanship (15.0%), responsibility (15.0%), self-confidence (12.5%), tolerance (10.0%), and social concern (7.5%). This article offers the ACTIVE CULTURE conceptual model as a framework for learning traditional sports based on experience, reflection, value dialogue, and character assessment

Abstract

This study aims to improve the balance abilities of sixth-grade students at MIN 41 Bireuen through the implementation of a marble-carrying game in Physical Education, Sports, and Health (PJOK) learning. The background of this research is the low balance skills of students, as indicated by the low percentage of learning mastery achieved during the preliminary observation. This study employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design conducted in two cycles, with each cycle consisting of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting stages. The research subjects consisted of 10 sixth-grade students at MIN 41 Bireuen. Data were collected through observation, performance tests, questionnaires, and documentation. The findings revealed a significant improvement in students’ balance abilities in each cycle. The percentage of learning mastery increased from 20% in the pre-action stage to 60% in Cycle I and further increased to 90% in Cycle II. Furthermore, the activities of both teachers and students showed improvement and reached the predetermined success indicators. Students also gave positive responses to the implementation of the marble-carrying game during learning activities. Therefore, it can be concluded that the marble-carrying game is effective in improving the balance abilities of sixth-grade students at MIN 41 Bireuen and creating an enjoyable and active learning atmosphere.
