Abstract

Abstract: The choice of strategies and modifications of speech acts in conversational communication may be correlated with sociolinguistic factors, such as ethnicity, social distance and dominance. Requests, as a part of speech acts, provide an interesting focus in this research because requests are face threatening acts. This article was based on a research conducted in the period of April to June 2008. The subjects of the research were female EFL learners of English Education Study Program at Sriwijaya University Inderalaya in South Sumatera Indonesia. The investigation utilized a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods, revealed that: (1) in terms of patterns, the female EFL learners of different ethnic groups performed similar request patterns, (2) in terms of correlation, the subjects’ ethnic backgrounds did not correlate with their strategies, yet, their ethnic backgrounds had correlation with the subjects request modifications, (3) the subjects’ request strategies and modifications did not correlate with social distance and dominance. The information gained can be utilized as a basis for integrating cultures and social dimensions between speakers and hearers into the teaching of EFL as well as EIL to increase students’ intercultural and pragmatic competence.

Abstract

Penelitian ini merupakan tindak lanjut dari hasil observasi awal penulis yang mendapati bahwa instrumen yang digunakan dalam penilaian kinerja guru cenderung terakumulasi dalam kegitan pembelajaran yang terdiri dari perencanaan, pelaksanaan, dan evaluasi pembelajaran siswa. Melihat poin-poin instrumen penilaian kinerja guru di SD Negeri 19 Betung tersebut, peneliti menemukan indikator bahwa tugas pokok dan fungsi guru belum tampak dalam substansi penilaian kinerja guru di SD Negeri 19 Betung. Penyusunan instrumen penilaian kinerja guru dengan sumber utama teman sejawat, dan diri sendiri, menjadi sangat penting.Bentuk self assesment dapat dipergunakan sebagai media penilaian diri.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui dan mengevaluasi peran instructional leadership Kepala Sekolah dalam meningkatkan profesionalisme Guru di SD Negeri 9 Betung. Penelitian dilakukan di SDN 9 Betung Kabupaten Banyuasin. Jenis penelitian yang digunakan adalah penelitian kualitatif deskriptif. Alat pengumpulan data menggunakan wawancara, dokumentasi, dan observasi serta studi pustaka. Teknik analisis data terdiri dari pengumpulan data, reduksi data, penyajian data, serta penarikan kesimpulan dan verifikasi. Hasil penelitian menyatakan bahwa peran utama kepala sekolah dalam mengembangkan kualitas sumber daya guru di SD Negeri 9 Betung adalah sebagai berikut: 1) pendidik; 2) manajer; 3) administrator; 4) supervisor; 5) pemimpin; 6) inovator, dan 7) motivator. Kepala sekolah memiliki peran strategis dalam mengembangkan dan meningkatkan kompetensi guru, baik sebagai pendidik, pengelola, pengurus, pengawas, pemimpin, inovator dan motivator.

Abstract

his research investigated  Deixis used in the novel entitled The Good Muslim by Tahmima Anam.This study was conducted to find out; (1) types of deixis contained in utterances of the novel entitled the Good Muslim by Tahmima Anam, (2) types of deixis were used most in the Novel entitled The Good Muslim by Tahmima Anam. Therefore, it gived significant to the author herself, the learners, other researchers and english teachers. The writer used levinson’s theory in analyzing the data. The methodology of this research  was qualitative descriptive study. The technique used to collect the data was documentation. The data was taken from 1.972 utterances of the novel entitled the Good Muslim by Tahmima Anam. From the data have been analyzed, it was found that there were five types of deixis, they were person deixis occured 1.723 times (87.4%), place deixis occured 53 times (2.7%), time deixis occured 68 times (3.4%), discourse deixis occured 83 times (4.2 %), person deixis occured 45 times (2.3 %). The most commonly used types of deixis was person deixis occuring 1.723 times (87.4%).

Abstract

This paper is a qualitative research, which aimed at providing an overview of the implementation of character education in fostering students at SD Negeri 17 Gelumbang. The subjects in this study were the principal, teachers, and students. Data collection were carried out through interviews, observation and documentation. Data were analyzed by reduction, presentation, and conculsion. The results concluded that the implementation of character values ​​at SD Negeri 17 Gelumbang is carried out by internalizing character values ​​into compulsory subject matter, namely Islamic Religious Education, Citizenship Education, Indonesian Language, Mathematics, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, and Physical Health Education through a learning process. The implementation of character values ​​at SD Negeri 17 Gelumbang is carried out programmatically.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui bagaimanakah manajemen pendidikan karakter berbasis pondok pesantren di Raudhatul Ulum. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif. Subjek penelitian adalah Pimpinan Pondok Pesantren Raudhatul Ulum, Asisten Pimpinan Pesantren bagian Akademis, Asisten Pimpinan Pesantren bagian HRD, Wali asrama, guru dan Ketua Organisasi Pelajar Pondok Pesntren. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan wawancara, observasi dan analisis dokumen. Hasil yang diperoleh dalam penelitian ini adalah 1) perencanaan pendidikan karakter disusun sesuai dengan visi, misi dan tujuan pendidikan dengan mengembangkan kurikulum, metode dan sosialisasi; 2) dalam pengorganisasian pendidikan karakter yang bertanggung jawab adalah Kepala Sekolah dan pengasuhan santri; 3) pendidikan karakter dilaksanakan baik formal, informal dan nonformal; dan 4) pengontrolan dilakukan oleh semua stakeholder Pondok Pesantren, baik melalui rapor sekolah maupun rapor pondok yang dapat menentukan kenaikkan dan kelulusan peserta didik.

Abstract

This research was conducted by the researcher as an English teacher at Taman Siswa Vocational School of Palembang for the tenth-grade students in the academic year of 2019/2020. Since only a few students could participate in the research, this study aimed to find out how the Small Group Discussion Strategy (SGDS) improved students' speaking skills. The subject of this study was 22 students from the tenth grade of Taman Siswa Vocational School of Palembang. The material used was advertisement materials. The materials contain selected advertisement texts to be discussed by students during the study. The method of this study was Classroom Action Research (CAR). This study was conducted in three cycles with several procedures, there were planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. Each cycle has two meetings and one test. Data from this study were obtained by using oral tests and questionnaires. The findings from this study indicated that using the Small Group Discussion Strategy (SGDS) can improve the students' speaking achievement. The improvement by improvement was seen starting from cycle II and cycle III. In Cycle II it appeared that the percentage of students who got the criteria of a minimum standard score was 68.20% and students who did not get the criteria of a minimum standard score were 31.80%. In the last cycle III. twenty students who got the criteria of a minimum standard score with a percentage of 86.40% and two students who did not get the criteria of a minimum standard score were 13.60%. This means the improvements of the tenth-grade students’ speaking skills were successful.

Abstract

This article is concerned with the inquiry on the influence of interactive multimedia and reading habit toward students’ writing achievement. This study is aimed to investigate the empirical evidence about interactive multimedia and reading habit and its influence on writing achievement. The population of this study encompassed all the seventh-grade students of Ar Rahman Islamic Junior High School of which total is 112 students. From the population, only 34 students were taken as samples. A simple random sampling technique was used in recruiting the samples. This is a quantitative study. The data were collected by using questionnaire, pre-test, and post-test. Data were analyzed by using t-test and Two Way Anova. Findings show that there were significant influences of interactive multimedia and reading habit toward seventh-grade students’ writing achievement. There were interaction effects from the application of interactive multimedia and reading habit on the seventh-grade students’ writing achievement. There was a significant difference in writing achievement between seventh-grade students who had high reading habits and those who had low reading habits taught by interactive multimedia. The conclusion suggests that interactive multimedia and reading habit show significant roles to improve students’ writing achievement of descriptive texts.

Abstract

Abstract: This paper reviews how language educators and researchers have responded to issues in the online era, such as globalization, transnational migration, and global challenges.  Online technology has triggered increasing globalization of businesses and has become a powerful means of communication for individuals in establishing and developing relationships across national boundaries. Furthermore, it has served to raise awareness of social, economic, and environmental challenges of the 21st century.  In spite of its positive effects, online technology development results in a more demanding world which requires individuals to enhance their competitive ability. Improving the quality of education is paramount in strengthening the quality of human resources.  Based on the review of language educators’ and researchers’ responses toward issues in the online era, the writer considers what English educators, particularly those in Indonesia, can do to advocate the enhancement of education quality through their roles as teachers, researchers, and community members. Keywords: globalization, language educators, online technology Abstrak: Makalah ini mengulas bagaimana para pendidik dan peneliti bahasa telah menanggapi isu-isu di era online, seperti globalisasi, migrasi transnasional, dan tantangan global. Teknologi dalam jaringan (online) telah memicu meningkatnya globalisasi bisnis dan telah menjadi sarana komunikasi yang penting bagi masyarakat dunia dalam membangun dan mengembangkan hubungan lintas batas negara. Selain itu, teknologi online telah meningkatkan kesadaran akan tantangan sosial, ekonomi, dan lingkungan abad ke-21. Terlepas dari efek positifnya, pengembangan teknologi online menuntut sumber daya manusia untuk meningkatkan kemampuan kompetitif mereka. Peningkatan kualitas pendidikan sangat penting dalam memperkuat kualitas sumber daya manusia. Berdasarkan tinjauan terhadap reaksi para pendidik bahasa dan peneliti terhadap isu-isu di era online, penulis memberikan rekomendasi mengenai apa yang dapat dilakukan oleh para pendidik bahasa Inggris, khususnya yang ada di Indonesia, untuk mengadvokasi peningkatan kualitas pendidikan melalui peran mereka sebagai guru, peneliti, dan anggota masyarakat.Kata-kata kunci: globalisasi, tenaga pendidikan Bahasa Inggris, teknologi dalam jaringan

Abstract

Abstract: The burden of maintaining the continuity of education amid Covid-19 pandemic highlights the necessity to increase English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teacher collaboration. This article aims to present a review of literature concerning the benefis and challenges of teacher collaboration, forms of teacher collaboration practices, and the roles of educational leaders in fostering teacher collaboration. Then, it explores possible ways in leveraging online resources to support teachers’ collaborative activities. Results of the literature review shows that teachers’ collaborative effrts effctively support their professional development and improve students’ achievement despite several challenges. Some of the challenges are teachers’ lack of time management, inability to provide and receive feedback, inability to appoint collaborative leaders, limited leadership support, defiiency in pedagogical knowledge, and limited technological access and skills. Collaborative practices include peer coaching, pedagogical discussions, sharing of teaching materials, peer observation, pair mentoring, and study groups. Existing literature also shows that the support of educational leaders toward teacher collaboration leads to better teachers’ professional development and students’ achievement. In addition, the review indicates that online platforms serve as powerful media for collaborative activities. Based on the review of literature, several implications are drawn with regards to the roles of schools, teachers, teacher education institutions, the government, and possibilities for future research.Keywords: Teacher collaboration, New Normal, Online ResourcesAbstrak: Beban menjaga keberlangsungan pendidikan akibat pandemi Covid-19 mengharuskan para guru Bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing untuk meningkatkan kegiatan berkolaborasi. Artikel ini bertujuan untuk menyajikan kajian pustaka mengenai manfaat dan tantangan kolaborasi guru, bentuk-bentuk aktifias dalam kolaborasi guru, dan peran pemimpin institusi/ organisasi pendidikan dalam membina kolaborasi guru. Tulisan ini juga mengeksplorasi berbagai cara yang dapat dilakukan dalam rangka memanfaatkan sumber daya online untuk kegiatan kolaboratif. Hasil tinjauan pustaka menunjukkan bahwa kolaborasi guru efektif dalam pengembangan profesionalisme guru dan peningkatan prestasi siswa walaupun terdapat beberapa tantangan dalam implementasinya. Beberapa tantangan yang dihadapi adalah kurangnya kemampuan guru dalam mengatur waktu, ketidakmampuan dalam memberikan dan menerima umpan balik, ketidakmampuan untuk menunjuk pemimpin dalam kelompokkelompok kolaboratif, terbatasnya dukungan pemimpin, kurangnya pengetahuan pedagogis dan akses terhadap teknologi, serta terbatasnya keterampilan menggunakan teknologi. Bentuk aktifias kolaboratif guru termasuk peer coaching, diskusi mengenai pembelajaran, berbagi bahan pengajaran, peer observation, pair mentoring, dan kelompok belajar. Literatur yang ada menunjukkan bahwa dukungan pemimpin institusi/organisasi pendidikan terhadap kolaborasi guru berdampak pada pengembangan profesional guru dan peningkatan prestasi siswa. Selain itu, pustaka yang ada juga menunjukkan bahwa media online menunjang kegiatan kolaboratif guru. Berdasarkan kajian literatur terhadap kolaborasi guru, disimpulkan beberapa implikasi sehubungan dengan peran sekolah, guru, lembaga pendidikan keguruan, pemerintah, dan kemungkinan arah penelitian ke depan.Kata-kata Kunci: kolaborasi guru, kenormalan baru, media dalam jaringan
