Abstract

Vocabulary is needed in English reading comprehension. The correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension was concern to be figured out. There were 37 eighth-grade students of SMP (SLUB) Saraswati 1 Denpasar in the academic year 2022/2023 who participated in the study. Further, in collecting the data, the researchers used two kinds of tests: a cloze task for vocabulary mastery and a short answer task for reading comprehension. SPSS 25.0 program was utilized to analyze the data with the following steps: normality testing, homogeneity testing, Pearson Product Moment, and t-test. The result of this research showed that there was a significant correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension with an r value 0.675. In addition, it showed that the level correlation was sufficient because it was in the interval of 0.60-0.799. Therefore, it shows a significant correlation between the two variables: vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension. Further studies with a wide range of subjects are recommended to figure out the role of vocabulary in English learning.

Abstract

This present study is an associational study that employed simple linear regression model. There were two variables in this study such as self-efficacy as the independent variable while speaking performance as the dependent one. This study was conducted at a public university in Indonesia. The subjects recruited were 75 students. The data were collected by administering a self-efficacy questionnaire which contains 28 items. The data were analyzed quantitatively using SPSS program. The results show that mostly, the students had average and high category of SE as shown by 22.7% and 38.7% respectively. Moreover, it was found that F (1, 72) = 17.950, p < 0.001. It means that statistically there was an impact of students’ self-efficacy toward students’ speaking performance. Based on the aforementioned results, it can be concluded that the students had good potential to enhance their speaking skills and their SE had significant contribution to their speaking performance.

Abstract

Reading is faced as a difficult activity to do. The preliminary study presented that the eighth-grade students of SMPN 1 kediri in the academic year 2022/2023 are difficult to identify general information, specific information, textual meaning, and textual reference. Looking at the prior condition, this research aims at knowing the students’ improvement after being treated with read-ask-put (rap) strategy. Therefore, classroom action research was considered to be undergone in two cycles. The instruments were tests and a questionnaire. The data was analyzed by looking at the result of the tests: pre-test and post-tests. The results showed that there occurred improvement from the mean score of the pre-test to the post-tests. It is in line with the result of the questionnaire which showed positive responses. Further rap strategy implementation is needed to be integrated with other language skills.

Abstract

In English language there are several language components and skills. There are grammar and writing that take an important role and crucial to be learned by the students because it can help students to get better results in English. Therefore, regarding the importance of grammar and writing for students, the researchers conducted this study that discussed about the correlation between grammar mastery and writing ability. This research aimed to find out the correlation between grammar mastery and writing ability. The sample was consisted of 37 students which was the eighth-grade students of SMP (SLUB) Saraswati 1 Denpasar in academic year 2022/2023. Moreover, there were two tests, namely, the completion test for grammar mastery and paragraph construction test for writing ability. SPSS 25.0 program was used to analyze the data. The result showed that there was a significant correlation among the variables: r value 0.924. It showed very high-level correlation because it was in the interval 0.80-1.000. Therefore, grammar mastery should be considered on teaching writing ability.

Abstract

This research aims to increase students’ self-confidence in speaking skills by using the Three Step Interview at Eleventh Grade on SMA Negeri 8 Denpasar. This research used Classroom Action Research (CAR) which was taken from Kemmis and McTaggarat’s design. This research was finished in one cycle that consisted of four phases, those were: planning, acting, observing, and reflection. The subject of this research was XI IPA 2 class which consist of 48 students. The method of this research was Three Step Interview which runs into some steps; a) students made a group consisting of 4 persons, b) the teacher gave the topic to the students, c) students were in pairs, one was the interviewer and the other was the interviewee, d) students A interviewed students B and student C interviewed student B, e) students reserved roles and each shared with team member what was learned during the two interviews, f) the teacher gave the reward to the best group. The instruments used in this study were an observation checklist and a questionnaire. This action research was done in two cycles. That got a positive response from the student. There are almost half students agreed to use three steps interview as a teaching method and do some tests on each cycle. The students have a significant improvement. The researchers concluded that this research was successful to increase students’ self-confidence in speaking skills.

Abstract

It is impossible to separate comprehension from reading. The pre-test results indicated that the individuals struggled to recognize the text's general content, specialized information, textual meaning, and textual references. The goal of the current study was to determine whether Numbered Heads Together could help eighth grade students at SMPN 4 Kuta Utara with their reading comprehension. As a result, the researcher carried out an action research study in a classroom to meet the study's goal. The pre-test, post-test, and questionnaire were then given out by the researcher. From the pre-test, the students' mean scores significantly improved, going from 59.37 in cycle I to 71.87 in cycle II and 82.81 in cycle III. Moreover, the researcher used the questionnaire in the conclusion to get the extra supporting data. The result of the questionnaire showed the percentage of the 52.32% strongly agreed, 41.86% agreed, 5.37% undecided, 0.43% disagreed and 0% strongly agreed. Based on the results, of this study it could be concluded that reading comprehension of the eighth grade students of SMPN 4 Kuta Utara in academic year 2023/2024 can be improved through Numbered Heads Together.

Abstract

Penggunaan bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa pengantar dalam proses pembelajaran menjadi tren global dan tuntutan di sektor pendidikan. Namun, memiliki kemampuan dalam berbahasa Inggris bukan berarti tidak adanya kesalahan saat menggunakan dalam proses pembelajaran. Penelitian ini berfokus pada kesalahan siswa dalam menggunakan Bahasa Inggris saat presentasi. Penelitian ini bertujuan: (1) untuk mengetahui kesalahan tata bahasa umum terjadi ketika siswa melakukan presentasi dalam bahasa Inggris; dan (2) untuk mengetahui perasaan dalam menggunakan bahasa Inggris. Desain penelitian kualitatif digunakan dalam penelitian ini. 40 mahasiswa program studi pendidikan Biologi menjadi subjek penelitian. Mereka berpartisipasi untuk mengisi kuesioner. Empat rekaman video presentasi diunggah ke YouTube sebagai data penelitian. Data kesalahan tata bahasa siswa juga dikumpulkan dan dianalisis. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa: (1) siswa mampu melakukan presentasi dalam bahasa Inggris namun melakukan kesalahan dalam tenses, pemilihan kata, dan kata benda tunggal/jamak; (2) kecemasan terjadi ketika mereka berbicara bahasa Inggris. Penelitian ini menyiratkan bahwa siswa memerlukan kursus bahasa Inggris intensif untuk memperkuat bahasa Inggris dasar mereka.

Abstract

Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat yang bertempat di Yayasan Tat Twam Asi Denpasar melibatkan dosen dan mahasiswa prodi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris. Kegiatan ini mengambil tema pengajaran Bahasa Inggris sehari-hari. Teknik Role Play di implementasikan dalam pembelajaran Speaking dengan tujuan anak-anak didik di Yayasan Tat Twam Asi bisa meningkatkan kemampuan Speaking. Berdasarkan hasil kuesioner yang telah disebarkan, anak-anak didik di Yayasan Tat Twam Asi memberikan respon yang positif terhadap kegiatan pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris. Kegiatan ini diharapkan mampu meningkatkan rasa peduli mahasiswa dengan masyarakat sekitar dengan cara berbagi ilmu yang mereka miliki.

Abstract

Speaking is a crucial language skill to be mastered in this era. However, most of the students faced problems with their speaking ability. It happens at SMP (SLUB) Saraswati 1 Denpasar. Thus, this study aimed at finding out the improvement of the eighth-grade student with the implementation of Think Pair Share (THS) combined with Flipgrid. Classroom Action Research was used as the research method. Pre-test, post-test, and questionnaire were administered to collect data. The result of the post-tests I and II were 79.9 and 79.24. Moreover, the questionnaire result showed that the students were actively engaged and motivated after the implementation of TPS combined with Flipgrid. To sum up, the present classroom action research proved that the students’ speaking ability could be improved. In Addition, the subjects also responded positively. The implication of the study is a fun and enjoyable ambiance in the teaching and learning process should be accommodated in the speaking activities.

Abstract

Reading comprehension is the ability to process written text, understand its meaning, and to integrate with what the reader already knows. This research aims to determine the effectiveness of the Numbered Head Together technique in improving reading comprehension, where the application is carried out in two cycles. The subjects of this research were the seventh-grade students at SMPN 5 Mengwi in academic year 2023/2024. The class consisted of 33 students who were deficient in reading, especially in reading comprehension. The data were then analyzed by comparing the results of the pre-test and post-tests which showed there were significant improvements of the subjects' mean score from the pre-test to post-tests. As the supporting data, the questionnaire was also administered at the end of the last cycle and the results showed positive responses on the implementation of Numbered Head Together. Based on the results of the research instruments, it could be concluded that Reading comprehension of the seventh-grade students of SMPN 5 Mengwi in academic year 2023/2024 could be improved through Numbered Head Together.
