Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to develop an Islamic ontological framework for digital religious practice as a response to the reductionism and fragmentation characterizing digital New Age spirituality. The research addresses a critical gap in contemporary scholarship, where digital spirituality is often examined descriptively or pragmatically without sufficient engagement with underlying ontological foundations, particularly within Islamic philosophical discourse. Methodology: This research employs a qualitative conceptual–philosophical approach using systematic conceptual synthesis. The study analyzes twenty-five peer-reviewed scholarly articles published between 2018 and 2025 on digital religiosity, New Age spirituality, and Islamic ontology, alongside classical Islamic sources. Following Jaakkola’s framework for conceptual research, the analysis proceeds through thematic categorization, comparative ontological analysis across six dimensions, and abductive theoretical synthesis to construct a normative framework of Islamic cyberspirituality. Findings: The study identifies four constitutive patterns of digital New Age spirituality—individualism, syncretism, aesthetic spirituality, and commodification—which collectively generate three ontological ruptures: displacement of transcendence by subjective emotionalism, replacement of religious authority by algorithmic validation, and transformation of spiritual discipline into consumable experience. In contrast, Islamic cyberspirituality is shown to rest on two interlocking principles: tawhid as the ontological axis preserving the Creator–creation distinction and revelation-based truth, and tazkiyah al-nafs as a transformative discipline orienting spiritual growth vertically toward God. This framework repositions technology as wasīlah (instrumental means) rather than ghāyah (end), and generates concrete implications across five domains: digital da‘wah, online Sufism, authority structures, attention governance, and religious identity formation. Implications: The findings offer actionable guidance for Muslim content creators, educators, religious institutions, technologists, and individual believers seeking to cultivate authentic digital spirituality. The framework provides evaluative criteria for digital religious content, ethical principles for technology design, and practical strategies for resisting commodification and algorithmic domination in religious practice. Originality/Value: This study contributes original value by moving beyond critique toward constructive ontological reconstruction. It is among the first to systematically integrate classical Islamic metaphysics with contemporary digital practice theory, demonstrating that tawhid and tazkiyah al-nafs provide robust conceptual resources for addressing algorithmic authority, attention commodification, and spiritual fragmentation in digital environments.

Abstract

Blind people are one of the disabled groups who have limited vision, who require the help of other people or certain tools to carry out daily activities. So far, the blind has used canes to help them when walking, but the canes they usually use are not helpful enough. For this reason, it is necessary to implement an innovative smart cane with smartphone-based sensors for the blind. The implementation method was to carry out empowerment with a participatory approach, by implementing the smart cane innovation tool for the blind. The smart cane was equipped with sensors, light reflectors, GPS (Global Positioning System) navigation and an emergency button. The sensor functions to helps identify surrounding objects, making it easier for the blind to walk without worrying about tripping or being blocked by objects while walking. Light reflectors provide additional security by reflecting light when walking at night. The implementation of the smart cane was very helpful and made it easier for the blind to make their activities safer and more comfortable. Smart cane one of the innovative solutions that need to continue to be developed to help disabled groups, especially the blind, so that they have equal access to other people.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of the Gawi dance as local wisdom in fostering religious harmony in Wologai Village, Ende Regency, East Nusa Tenggara. This research employs a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation involving traditional leaders, religious leaders, and local community members selected purposively. Data analysis was conducted using the interactive model of Miles and Huberman, including data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that the Gawi dance functions not only as a cultural expression but also as a social mechanism that strengthens social cohesion. The practice of Gawi creates an inclusive social space, enhances trust, and builds interreligious social networks. From a social capital perspective, Gawi serves as a medium for producing bridging social capital that connects individuals from different backgrounds through shared collective experiences. Furthermore, this cultural practice gains religious legitimacy, allowing it to be widely accepted within the community. This study highlights that local wisdom has significant potential in promoting sustainable and context-based religious harmony. Therefore, empowering local cultural practices can serve as an alternative approach to maintaining social harmony at the community level.

Abstract

Cancer not only affects physical health but also causes psychological and spiritual problems for patients. Individuals diagnosed with cancer often experience anxiety, depression, and hopelessness, which can significantly reduce their quality of life. This community service activity aimed to provide psychosocial support through the implementation of psychoeducation-based spiritual care using innovative media, namely Virtual Reality (VR), at the Indonesian Cancer Foundation in Surabaya. The methods included socialization, preparation, intervention implementation (pre-test, material presentation, guided imagery practice through VR, and post-test), and evaluation. The participants consisted of 28 cancer patients, with the majority aged 36–45 years (53.6%). The findings showed that the patients’ psychological well-being increased from 64.3% (low category) before the intervention to 85.7% (high category) after the intervention. Conclusion: These findings indicate that the application of psychoeducation-based spiritual care through VR is effective in helping cancer patients enhance their calmness, motivation, and overall quality of life.

Abstract

This study examines social identity and digital networks in the practice of religious moderation among Muhammadiyah branches and sub-branches in Surabaya, Indonesia. Employing a mixed methods approach that integrates Social Network Analysis (SNA) with qualitative interpretive methods, the study aims to map the digital network structure of the organization, analyze the role of key actors in disseminating moderation values, and develop a conceptual model of a digital religious moderation network. The findings reveal that the digital moderation ecosystem of Muhammadiyah Surabaya operates through three structured narrative layers—policy, production, and distribution—underpinned by five mutually reinforcing factors: visionary leadership, digital social capital, autonomous infrastructure, digital literacy culture, and a responsive community feedback system. Key actors identified through degree centrality and betweenness centrality analysis play a significant role as bridges between communities in the digital preaching network. The dynamic interaction of these factors gives rise to the Organic Digital Moderation Ecology Model (MEDO), a bottom-up framework that transcends the top-down approaches dominating existing literature, while offering new theoretical contributions to the fields of religious communication and social network studies.
