Abstract

This paper explains about the implementation of “Using Pictures to Tell Stories” which is one of techniques in teaching speaking to improve the ability students’ in telling stories. This techniques use pictures as media that are provided by the teacher and the students make a story map based on the pictures. The purpose is to make the students easy to produce a narrative text by themselves. In this paper, the writer chooses narrative text that is appropriate with technique using pictures to tell stories. By using this technique in teaching narrative text, the students will have self confidence to produce narrative text orally.

Abstract

This study is about the relationship of students’ metacognitive reading strategies awareness and reading comprehension: the cast of sixth semester students of English Department Universitas Negeri Padang (UNP). Since it is still doubted whether or not there is a significant correlation between the students’ Metacognitive Reading Strategies Awareness and Reading Comprehension, the writer conducted a research to obtain the answers to those questions. Prior to finding out relationship, the study tried to ascertain the level awareness and types strategies that respondents use when they read English academic texts, and their reading performance. Using SORS questionnaire and Test TOEFL with students’ k1-15 English department (UNP), the study found out that the awareness of respondents on using metacognitive reading strategies is on medium level. From three categories of metacognitive reading strategies, the Problem-Solving Strategies (PROB) is the most frequently used by respondents. On the level reading comprehension, the respondents got below average or low level. For correlation, the study used Pearson product correlation moment. The study reveals that there is no correlation between metacognitive reading strategies awareness and reading comprehension.

Abstract

Abstrak   Kemampuan menulis siswa kelas XI SMA Adabiah Padang masih rendah. Salah satu kesulitan yang dihadapi siswa ketika menulis teks adalah  membuat topic kalimat yang benar dan mengembangkan topic kalimat tersebut menjadi kalimat-kalimat yang benar secara tatabahasa. Membuat kalimat yang lengkap dan benar secara tata bahasa merupakan hal yang penting dalam menulis. Dalam penelitian ini, peneliti mencoba untuk mengatasi masalah tersebut dengan menggunakan Self-Regulated Strategy Development. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat dampak dari penggunaan Self-Regulated Strategy Development terhadap kemampuan menulis teks hortatory exposition siswa kelas XI SMA Adabiah Padang. Jenis penelitian ini adalah penelitian eksperimental yang dilaksanakan di SMA Adabiah Padang. Self-Regulated Strategy Development ini memiliki enam proses dalam penggunaannya. Keenam proses ini adalah developing background knowledge, discussing, modeling, memorizing, supporting, dan write independently. Melalui pendekatan ini, siswa akan menulis dengan bantuan dirinya sendiri. Siswa akan bertanya kepada dirinya untuk membantu mengembangkan kalimat perkalimat dalam tulisannya. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa nilai rata-rata yang dihasilkan kelas eksperimen lebih tinggi dibandingkan kelas kontrol yaitu 70.23 : 63.63. Dengan menggunakan rumus t-test, diperoleh t-hitung sebesar 3.87 dan t-tabel sebesar 1.68. Hasil tersebut menyatakan bahwa t-hitung > t-tabel pada taraf signifikan 0.05, yang dapat disimpulkan bahwa penerapan Self-Regulated Strategy Development terhadap pengajaran hortatory exposition text memberikan dampak yang  baik terhadap kemampuan menulis siswa dibandingkan dengan metode pembelajaran yang biasa digunakan guru di sekolah. Kata kunci: Self Regulated Strategy Development, Hortatory exposition.

Abstract

Speaking is an important skill that used to communicate directly with other people. In English speaking skill the students have several problems, such as the students less self confidence and the low motivation given by the teacher and from the students themselves. Those problems can cause students' speaking skill still weak. Therefore, this paper explains a strategy for learning English in the form of a game called the Quartet Cards Game. This game can be used to increase students’ interest in English especially speaking skills.

Abstract

This research is a quasi-experimental research. The purpose of this research is to find out the effect of digital flashcard on students’ vocabulary mastery at SMPN 12 Padang. The population of this research were the first-year students of SMPN 12 Padang. The research sample was 27 students of class VII.3 as the experimental class and 27 students of class VII.9 as the control class. The instrument of this research was vocabulary test that was conducted into two tests, pre-test and post-test. The instrumentation was created into 20 short answer questions. Based on the data analysis by using Paired Sample T-test in SPSS 26 for windows, the mean of pre-test score in experimental class was 47.2 while the mean of post-test score in experimental class was 82.0. It can be concluded that the students’ who are taught by using digital flashcard as teaching media are better than students’ who are taught by using conventional media. The significance of the test is 0.000 which is lower than the significance level that is 0.05 with 5% of degree. Moreover, it is also found that the students’ score is improving especially for the students in experimental class which gained 34.8 of their average score.

Abstract

In this paper, the author discusses the use of 'mime game' in teaching English vocabulary for young learners. To teach young learners, we must first understand their characteristics and needs. The fact is that young learners love to play. Therefore, learning through playing is the most appropriate way to teach them. One of them is to use the game called as "mime game". Teaching through "mime game" will be begun with classes will be formed into a half circle and then a student will be given a word. Furthermore, the chosen students will be in the middle class while giving expression by using gesture and the other students try to guess the word in question. Young learners are also very fond of moving and imagining. By using "mime game", young learners will get moved by using their own way and imagine to guess a certain word. Basically, young learners will easily remember what they learn when they feel happy, comfortable, love, and enjoy what they do.

Abstract

This research is a quantitative-correlational research that measures the stage of the motivation of the students in learning speaking subject and their speaking ability in English. In addition the population of this research is the under-graduate students of English for education department, Faculty Language and Arts academic year 2017, Universitas Negeri Padang and the sample is chosen by using cluster sampling. Furthermore, the problem backgrounded this research is how the relationship between students’ motivation in learning speaking and the speaking ability. For this research, motivation is treated as the x variable and speaking ability as y variable. The instruments used in this research are questionnaire and test. The questionnaire is used to measure the motivation and test for the speaking ability. The questionnaire used is adapted from the The Attitude/Motivation Test Battery (AMTB) by Gardner. The questionnaire was analyzed by using likert scale and speaking test by using speaking rubrics by Brown. The result of this researchshows that there is a relationship between the motivation and speaking ability of tye students. It is shown by the correlational coefficient (rxy) with number 0,002. However, the relationship is not significant because when it is compared with rtable with (α) 5%, the number is 0,3494. It means that rtable > rxy. Thus, it can be concluded that the relationship between x variable and y variable is not significant, Keywords: speaking ability, motivasion, correlational research

Abstract

Until now, there are still many students who get difficulty in reading compehension, it is hard for them to gain the essence of information among the overlapping sentences. Therefore, the lecturer provides them strategies to handle it. Among others is mind mapping which facilitates the students in acquiring the important informations of the textbook effectively. The fact shows that mind mapping has been applied in some schools even in higher level of education which is intended to assist students in reading comprehension. However, there is too little attention in assessing it whereas mind mapping can be another alternative assessment tool for reading comprehension. By doing ongoing assessment, mind mapping can provide the lecturer with the information needed to develop appropriate lessons and improve instruction. This article explores on how the to utilize mind mapping as assessment tool rather than just as an assignment for reading comprehension. Key words:  mind mapping, assessment tool, reading comprehension

Abstract

Teaching is commonly defined as a process to transfer knowledge or information to the students. In transfering the knowledge, building communication with students is important for the teachers. The sentences that are used by the teachers can be medium of the students to achieve course objectives in learning English language. This study is conducted to find out the types of teacher talk are used by English teacher in teaching English language at SMP N 8 Sungai Penuh. It was conducted by using descriptive research. The participants in this study were English teachers who teach English and the students who learn English at SMP N 8 Sungai Penuh. The findings reveal that the teachers used referential question, display question, content feedback, Initiation Respond and Feedback sequence, student initiated to talk during teaching and learning English process occured. Key words: English teacher, teacher talk, teaching English language.
