Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of family gathering as a scientific approach to parenting education in improving parenting styles and social behavior among children with intellectual disabilities at SLB Lentera Bunda, Solok. Using a mixed-method design with a one-group pretest-posttest model, the research involved 10 children and 9 parents who participated in two structured family gathering sessions integrating recreational and educational elements. Quantitative data were collected through observation checklists measuring 21 indicators of social behavior, while qualitative data were gathered via in-depth interviews and field documentation. Results showed a significant increase in children’s average social behavior score from 12.4 (pretest) to 14.3 (posttest), confirmed by a paired t-test (p = 0.001). Thematic analysis revealed a shift in parenting styles from authoritarian to democratic, with parents reporting improved communication, emotional regulation, and collaborative decision-making. The activity fostered a supportive environment for experiential learning, strengthened parent-child interaction, and enhanced social skills in children. Findings confirm that family gathering, when designed educationally, functions as a valid psychosocial intervention. It is recommended as a structured program in special education settings to promote holistic development through family-school collaboration.

Abstract

The advancements of knowledge and technology in the fourth industrial revolution have influenced learning settings at school. Teachers have to develop new learning methods, models, and media to help improve their students' learning outcomes.  The technology that is becoming popular among students is Android-based media. Students at school are diverse and so are students at special education schools(SLB). Students with hearing impairment are those who suffer from hard of hearing and hearing loss. Teachers must get their students to make the most of their residual hearing and other senses like touch and sight when learning, especially during difficult subjects. One of the subjects that the students consider the hardest is religious education because it has a lot of practice and memorization. Hijaiyah is 30 letters of the Arabic alphabet and learning them becomes the core competency in reading the Quran. Teachers can use sign language as their teaching strategy. Sign language is a non-verbal language used by hearing-impaired people. However, sign language is still not commonly used among teachers at special education schools. This research used Research and Development model. The data were collected through observations, interviews, documentation, and literature study. The data analysis was conducted using data reduction, data presentation, and data interpretation. The product of the research is an Android application for learning hijaiyah letters through sign language for students with hearing impairment.

Abstract

Discipline and independence are qualities that children should have. These characters will be very useful to support children's learning progress. This, of course, must be supported by parents, who are the main support system for children. However, their roles will be very different and become an exception for parents with blind disabilities. This study aims to find out how the role of blind parents develops the character traits of discipline and independence in their children. This study uses a qualitative narrative method. This research was conducted in a family with the characteristics of parents who are blind disabilities, and children who are without blind disabilities. This research was conducted in 2021 in one of the sub-districts in the city of Padang. Data collection techniques include interviews, observation, and documentation. The results of the study show that the character of discipline can be exercised by establishing disciplinary behavior in children by setting their bedtimes well and then giving clear and consistent rules. Meanwhile, independent character can be used to familiarize children with daily activities such as bathing, eating, dressing, washing, praying, and doing schoolwork.

Abstract

Objective: Independence in wearing lace-up shoes is an essential self-care skill for students with mild intellectual disabilities, yet it requires fine motor coordination, attention, and sequential understanding that often become learning barriers. This study aimed to improve the independence of seventh-grade students with mild intellectual disabilities in wearing lace-up shoes through the forward chaining technique at SLB C Muzdalifah Medan. Methods: The study used classroom action research conducted in two cycles, with three meetings in each cycle. The participants were four students, namely NAP, HH, RM, and ARP. Data were collected through observation, performance tests, interviews, and documentation, then analyzed descriptively using qualitative notes and quantitative percentages. Results: The students’ independence increased across cycles. At the end of Cycle I, NAP reached 33.33%, HH 50%, RM 66.66%, and ARP 50%, so none met the 70% mastery criterion. After repeated practice, positive reinforcement, and gradual prompt fading in Cycle II, NAP and ARP reached 83.33%, while HH and RM reached 100%. Novelty: The study demonstrates a structured application of forward chaining for lace-up shoe skills in mild intellectual disability learning.

Abstract

Abstract

Physical Education (PJOK) learning for students with intellectual disabilities requires structured, varied activities and opportunities for repeated practice because conventional movement learning methods tend to be less able to maintain attention and accommodate their learning needs. This study examines the application of circuit games in improving fundamental movement skills in PJOK learning for students with intellectual disabilities at SLB N Mandailing Natal. The study used the Classroom Action Research (CAR) model of Kemmis and Taggart, which was implemented in two cycles, each consisting of four meetings. Two students with intellectual disabilities were selected purposively based on an initial assessment that showed obstacles in the locomotor, non-locomotor, and manipulative aspects of movement. Data were collected through observation, performance tests, and documentation, then analyzed descriptively quantitatively using percentages with a success indicator of ≥60% per student. The results of the initial assessment showed that student B obtained a score of 43% and student R 50%. After the first cycle, the scores increased to 67% and 80%. In the second cycle, media modifications were carried out by simplifying obstacles, using more attractive and appropriate tools according to students' abilities, and gradually reducing teacher assistance. As a result, student B achieved 97% and student R 100%. These findings indicate that circuit games effectively improve fundamental motor skills through activities that are adaptive, gradual, and appropriate to the learning characteristics of students with intellectual disabilities.
