Abstract

Abstract

Sampelong is a traditional Minangkabau wind instrument originating from Nagari Talang Maua in Lima Puluh Kota Regency, West Sumatra. Made from bamboo, the sampelong is typically performed alongside oral literature rich in cultural messages. As one of Minangkabau’s oldest musical instruments—its tonal intervals bearing influences from Hindu-Buddhist traditions—it deserves greater appreciation from younger generations as a symbol of the region’s cultural advancement. Today, sampelong makers and performers no longer treat the instrument as part of mystical rituals, but rather as an art form focused on aesthetics, music, and performance. This Community Partnership Program (PKM) was designed as a community engagement initiative to revitalize sampelong through targeted training for youth. The beneficiaries were students and teachers from SMA Negeri 1 Payakumbuh in Lima Puluh Kota Regency. The training involved 30 participants and followed a structured process of planning, implementation, evaluation, and artistic output. Methods used included lectures, demonstrations, discussions, and comprehensive evaluations. The program successfully enhanced participants’ knowledge and introduced a new innovation: the creation of a sampelong ensemble composition as a form of performing art. The initiative also received enthusiastic collaboration and support from various stakeholders.
