Abstract

The aims of this research were to determine the hatching percentage of snakehead fish egg which incubated on different duration of aeration (oxygen supply). This research had been conducted in the Fish Breeding Unit “Batanghari Sembilan”, Indralaya since October until November 2017. This research used Completely Randomized Design method (CRD) with 5 treatments and 3 replications consist of; P1 (24 hours, aerated), P2 (24 hours non aerated), P3 (12 hours aerated, 12 hours non aerated), P4 (10 hours aerated, 14 hours non aerated) and P5 (8 hours aerated, 16 hours non aerated). The result of this research showed that the best hatching percentage, were P4 81.64%. Survival rate of pro larva (3 day old / D3), the best result were treatment 4 (P4), 86,54%. Baside on, hatching percentage and survival rate of prolarva parameter, P4 is the best treatment. Furthemore, time efficiency and cost of operation fish breeding program, treatment P4 suggested.   Key words: egg snakehead fish, aeration, dissolved oxygen.

Abstract

Lais fish is one of the endemic fish with a fairly high demand in the market. Famous for its delicious taste, lais fish it be processed in various forms of cuisine such as pindang, pempek and salai (Palembang specialties). The high public interest in this fish provides promising business prospects. However, the fulfillment of the needs of lais fish still comes from natural catches. Sothat if done prolonged, it will cause a decline in the population which if not overcome by lais fish will experience extinction. The purpose of this article is to invite the public to preserve lais fish as endemic fish and make this fish a farming commodity by knowing some basic information about lais fish. The writing method used is a literature study. As for the results obtained, lais fish are related to siamese shark (Pangasius sp.) and catfish (Clarias gariepinus). It has several local names such as jam fish or wedge lais fish, the national name of lais fish and its international name sheat catfishes. The living habitat of lais fish is in fresh water, especially flooded swamp waters. This fish is classified as a carnivore because most of its food is small shrimps and insects. The sexuality of fish can be seen based on morphology, namely differences in body size and head shape. The sex ratio of lais fish in nature is in a less balanced state. Lais fish will spawn at the time of entering the rainy season, with a spawner total spawning pattern. Lais fish has several advantages and is of economic value so that it is worthy of being a candidate for aquaculture commodities

Abstract

Problems often encountered in the breeding of selincah fish are that the maturation period of the male and female parent fish sometimes does not occur simultaneously. Reproductive biotechnology can be used to store sperm (sperm cryopreservation). Cryopreservation is a storage technique using a low temperature of -196oC. Extenders and cryoprotectants play an important role in the cryopreservation process. One of the extender materials that can be used is honey. This study was conducted to determine the best dose of honey as an extender material in cryopreserving selincah fish sperm. This study used a completely randomized design with four treatments and three replications. The treatments given were (P0) 100% ringer lactate solution, (P1) 0.25% honey + 99.75% ringer lactate solution, (P2) 0.5% honey + 99.50% ringer lactate solution, and (P3) 0.75% honey + 99.25% ringer lactate solution. The results of the study showed that pre-cryopreservation of selincah fish sperm included a sperm volume of 0.5 mL, sperm pH of 7, moderate sperm consistency, sperm movement duration of 120 seconds with a percentage of motility score of 5 (100%), and sperm viability of 89.50%. The post-cryopreservation study of selincah fish sperm for 14 days of storage showed the best results at P3 (0.75% honey) with a sperm motility score of 4 (90%) and sperm viability of 79.50%. Water quality data during the maintenance of selincah fish broodstock in this study were pH 6.0-7.5 and temperature 25.5 - 28.5oC.

Abstract

Tilapia farming in rural communities often faces challenges related to low growth rates and inconsistent seed quality. To address these issues, a community service program (PKM) was implemented to introduce monosex tilapia production technology combined with maggot-meal feed as an alternative protein source. This program aimed to enhance the technical capacity of local fish farmers and improve cultivation productivity in Tanjung Raya Village, Ogan Ilir Regency. The PKM was carried out on 22 September 2025 by a team of three lecturers from Universitas Sriwijaya and involved 15 members of the Maju Makmur Fish Farmers Group. The activity followed three stages: preparation, implementation, and reporting. The implementation consisted of material presentations, hands-on practice, discussions, and question-and-answer sessions. Participants were trained on monosex tilapia seed production techniques, the use of maggot-meal combination feed, and best management practices for freshwater aquaculture. The program resulted in increased farmer knowledge, improved skills in applying monosex technology, and greater understanding of cost-efficient feed formulation. Participants expressed high enthusiasm and readiness to adopt the introduced methods in their farming operations. This PKM activity is expected to support the sustainability and productivity of tilapia aquaculture in the village.

Abstract

The production of java combtail fry still relies heavily on wild catches, necessitating the development of semi-natural breeding techniques. One important factor influencing hatching success is the medium's pH. The pH value influences the activity of the enzyme chorionase, which softens the chorion, making the eggshell softer and facilitating hatching. This study aims to determine the optimal pH for the Java combtail hatching medium. The research method employed a completely randomized design (CRD) with 5 treatments and 3 replicates. The pH treatments for hatching were: medium pH 4±0.3 (P1), pH 5±0.3 (P2), pH 6±0.3 (P3), pH 7±0.3 (P4), and pH 8±0.3 (P5). The results showed that different pH levels in the hatching medium significantly affected hatching percentage, hatching duration, fry survival, fry length growth, and absolute fry weight. However, they had no significant effect on the percentage of larval abnormalities. P4 was the best treatment, yielding the highest hatching percentage of 90.00±0.82%, a hatching duration of 27.33±0.14 hours, and a larval survival rate of 96.19±2.43%, no larval abnormalities, absolute length growth of 4.94±0.05 mm, and absolute weight growth of 0.042±0.0010 g. This is likely because a pH of 7 (P4) represents the optimal condition supporting chorionase enzyme activity, thereby accelerating chorion softening and enhancing hatching success. Water quality during the study remained within the tolerance range for hatching and rearing of mudskipper fry. The research results serve as a reference for mudskipper fish farmers.

Abstract

Ikan seluang (Danionidae; Rasbora) merupakan ikan perairan tawar. Genus Rasbora memiliki keragaman speises paling tinggi dibandingkan genus lain dari Famili Danionidae. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah menginventarisasi jenis-jenis ikan seluang dari perairan rawa lebak Desa Cinta Marga Kabupaten Ogan Ilir Sumatera Selatan. Metode penelitian yakni survey dan purposive random sampling. Penentuan lokasi sampling berdasarkan informasi dari nelayan setempat. Alat tangkap ikan yang digunakan yaitu bubu, waring, dan lulung. Hasil penelitian diperoleh enam spesies ikan seluang, yakni Rasbora argyrotaenia, Rasbora sumatrana, Rasbora lacrimula, Rasbora lateristriata, Rasbora trileneata, dan Rasbora caundimaculata. Kelimpahan masing-masing spesies relativ masih tinggi. Keenam spesies tersebut dimanfaatkan masyarakat lokal sebagai ikan konsumsi. Keenam spesies berpotensi dijadikan ikan hias, sehingga penelitian domestikasi keenam spesies tersebut sangat disarankan.
