Abstract

One of the efforts to support the transformation of the Health sector is by implementing the first pillar, namely primary services that focus on promotive (education) and preventive (prevention and early detection efforts). This effort is very effective in reducing morbidity and mortality in the community, especially those caused by non-communicable diseases. Non-communicable diseases (NCD) are responsible for at least 70% of deaths in the world. Even though it cannot be transmitted from person to person or from animal to person, weak control of risk factors can affect the increase in cases every year. One of the non-communicable diseases is hypertension. The purpose of this community service is to carry out early detection and provide education and health services to the 3-4 Ulu sub-district community about risk factors that can increase blood pressure and their prevention efforts. This activity was carried out on Saturday 30 July 2022 at 08.00-13.00 WIB and was attended by 60 residents. The method of this activity is early detection in the form of blood pressure checks, risk factor screening, counseling and health services. This activity was considered successful, based on the enthusiasm of the participants who attended exceeded the target, the desire to ask questions and have their blood pressure checked, to be able to mention risk factors and disease prevention efforts as well as feedback from participants who stated this counseling was considered interesting and useful.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Background: Zinc and chromium are heavy metals that can contaminate community-dug well water that is used by people around landfills, and can cause public health problems. This study aimed to analyze the risk level of zinc (Zn) and chromium (Cr) content in the dug well water of the community around Sukawinatan landfill site. Methods: This research was an observational study using a cross-sectional design with an environmental health risk analysis approach, It was conducted in February–May 2021. The sample was water from the dug wells of the community that lives around the Sukawinatan landfill. The examination of zinc and chromium level in dug well water was used the Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES) method. Results: Zinc and chromium level in community dug well water was found to range from 0.03 mg/l to 0.09 mg/l for zinc concentration and from 0.0030 mg/l to 0.04 mg/l for chromium concentration, respectively. The results of calculating the potential dose (intake) for the two metals are still below the dose reference value, and for calculating the level of risk, the result is less than 1, which can be interpreted as not being risky.  Conclusion: Zinc and chromium level in the community's dug-well water around the landfill site was still below the quality standard. The potential dose (intake) and Risk Quotient were safe for the next few years.

Abstract

Anemia in pregnant women is a serious health problem in Indonesia, with a prevalence of 48.9% based on the 2018 Riskesdas data. This condition can have negative impacts on the health of both the mother and the fetus, such as increased risks of premature birth, low birth weight babies, and maternal and infant mortality. Anemia in pregnant women is generally caused by deficiencies in iron, folic acid, and vitamin B12. This community service activity aims to educate the public about preventing anemia among pregnant women, conducted at the Dahlia Posyandu in the working area of Puskesmas Ariodillah Palembang. The activities include outreach on the signs, symptoms, causes, and prevention of anemia, as well as hemoglobin (Hb) level examinations for early detection of anemia. The methods used are interactive socialization and health examinations, involving posyandu cadres and the surrounding community. The examination results indicate that no pregnant women were found to be anemic, and participants’ knowledge of anemia increased by 95% after attending the outreach. This activity is expected to raise public awareness of the importance of anemia prevention and health during pregnancy. Recommendations for follow-up programs include ongoing education, improving access to health services, and attention to the health of the elderly in the area.

Abstract

Asphyxia neonatorum is still the third cause of death for newborns in the first week of life. Failure to breathe spontaneously and regularly after birth if not handled properly will be fatal for the baby's life. The purpose of this study was to determine the risk factors and incidence of asphyxia neonatorum. This study uses an analytical survey with a cross sectional approach, using secondary data from the medical record installation of Muhamadiyah Hospital Palembang for the period 1 Sept to 1 Oct 2016 with a total sampling technique of 156 births. statistical analysis using chi-square. The results of the analysis of the incidence of asphyxia neonatorum was 8.3%. There was a significant relationship between amniotic fluid mixed with meconium (p=0,000;OR=21,719) and prolonged second stage (p=0,002;OR=42,600) and asphyxia neonatorum. Early detection through regular antenatal examinations can minimize risk factors and the incidence of asphyxia neonatorum.

Abstract

ANC repeat visits experienced a significant decline during the pandemic due to maternal concerns about the transmission of the Covid-19 virus. The absence of the mother in the visit causes limited information in recognizing the danger signs of pregnancy. This can be anticipated with the WhatsApp Reminder service as a supporting intervention to increase maternal compliance and knowledge. This study aims to determine the effect of WhatsApp Reminder on ANC visit compliance and knowledge of pregnancy danger signs. This pre-experimental study used a one group pre-test post-test design for one group of subjects. Sampling using simple random sampling was 30 respondents in third trimester mothers at Puskesmas 5 Ilir Palembang in June 2021. Collecting data with the MMAS-8 instrument and analyzed using the Marginal Homogeneity test with a significant level of <0.05. The results showed a high level of compliance 60% and good knowledge 74% with p = 0.000.

Abstract

Obesity among college students is a public health issue that is gaining increasing attention because it is associated with an increased risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and heart disease, and can reduce quality of life and academic productivity. College students, as a group of early adults, are in a transition phase towards independence and are therefore vulnerable to lifestyle changes, including unhealthy eating patterns, fast food consumption, low physical activity due to busy studies, irregular sleep habits, and high academic stress. This study aims to determine the risk factors associated with obesity among students at the Islamic University of Ogan Komering Ilir in 2025. This study used a cross-sectional design with a quantitative approach. A sample of 95 students was selected using a purposive sampling technique. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire and body mass index (BMI) measurement to determine respondents' nutritional status. Independent variables included diet, physical activity, sleep quality, stress levels, and a family history of obesity. The results showed a prevalence of obesity of 17.9%. Bivariate analysis found a significant association between obesity and unhealthy diet (p=0.002), low physical activity (p=0.000), poor sleep quality (p=0.000), and high stress levels (p=0.001). Meanwhile, a family history of obesity showed a tendency to have an effect but was not statistically significant. These findings indicate that obesity in college students is largely influenced by modifiable lifestyle factors. Therefore, this study emphasizes the importance of health promotion interventions on campus, such as balanced nutrition counseling, increased access to sports facilities, stress management, and education on healthy sleep patterns. Promotive and preventive efforts undertaken from a young age are expected to reduce the risk of obesity and chronic disease in the future.

Abstract

Background: Anemia is one of the public health problems commonly found among adolescent girls, especially in developing countries like Indonesia. This condition affects concentration, academic performance, and productivity, making early detection an essential step to prevent long-term complications. Objective: This study aims to determine the results of early detection of anemia based on clinical symptoms and hemoglobin (Hb) levels among adolescent girls at SMPN 18 Palembang. Methods: This research used a descriptive design with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 132 seventh-grade female students were selected randomly. Data were collected through an anemia symptom questionnaire and hemoglobin level measurement using a hemoglobinometer. Results: The study found that 23.5% of respondents were anemic (Hb < 12 g/dL), and 48.5% showed symptoms of anemia. However, the sensitivity of symptoms in detecting anemia was only 39%, specificity was 19%, with a positive predictive value (PPV) of 60.93% and a negative predictive value (NPV) of 8.82%. Conclusion: Based on the findings, symptom-based detection alone is not sufficiently accurate to diagnose anemia. Hemoglobin level examination is still required as a more valid and objective screening method for the early detection of anemia in adolescent girls In addition to medical intervention, the study advocates for increased awareness and education about anemia, its causes, and prevention methods among students, parents, and educators. Addressing nutritional deficiencies, especially iron intake, through dietary improvements and supplementation is essential in combating anemia in adolescent girls.
