Abstract

Abstract

ABSTRACT. Maggot Hermetia illucens (Maggot Black Soldier Fly, MBSF) is an alternative protein source besides soybean meal (SBM) which may be used as a feed for improving the quality of semen particularly in Garut rams to support prolific nature. The aims of this study were to analyzed and compare the impact of different protein sources in feed on semen quality of Garut rams, and to assess the prediction ability of Garut rams to serve ewe in small-scale breeders in West Java, Indonesia. This study was conducted using a completely randomized design with 3 treatments and 4 replications, consisted of Brachiaria humidicola (BH) grass and T1 (concentrate contains 20% of SBM), T2 (concentrate contains 10% of SBM and 10% of MBSF), and T3 (concentrate contains 20% of MBSF). The parameters measured were feed consumption, semen quality (macroscopic and microscopic characteristics), also a potential ability of rams to serve ewe. The results showed there were no significant effect on protein consumption, semen volume, semen pH, semen color and consistency, sperm mass movement, sperm motility, sperm concentration, sperm morphology, and prediction potential ability to serve ewe. However, the result showed a significant effect (P0.05) on sperm viability and sperm plasma membrane integrity. Sperm plasma membrane integrity of ram feed with T3 was better than T1 and T2 (P0.05). The prediction potential ability rams to serve ewes on MBSF treatment was 38 heads, while in T1 and T2 were 43 and 57 heads, respectively. In conclusion, MBSF can be an alternative source of protein besides SBM to improve the semen quality of Garut rams.ABSTRAK. Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the performance of prolific lambs fed milk replacer derived from mackerel peptone with prolific lambs fed mother’s milk. This study used six twin born lambs aged 1 week with an average birth weight of ± 2.05 kg and male. The treatments applied in this study were mother’s milk (P0) and milk replacer containing 100% mackerel peptone (P1). The observed variables included ash content, crude protein content, crude fat content, calcium content, phosphorus content, total nitrogen, total volatile base (TVB) content, milk amino acid profile, milk consumption, body weight gain, feed conversion rate, and mortality. The results showed that milk replacer containing 100% mackerel peptone had high crude protein content and complete amino acid composition. Prolific lambs fed with milk replacers showed no significant difference in body weight gain compared to those suckling from their mothers. Additionally, lambs receiving the milk replacer did not exhibit any signs of digestive disorders, loss of appetite, abnormal behavior, or mortality during the maintenance period. Utilization of mackerel peptone as an alternative protein source can be used up to 100% in milk replacer. It can be concluded that feeding milk replacers formulated with mackerel peptone resulted in a 1.30% increase in lamb body weight, with no significant difference observed in performance compared to lambs suckling form their mothers. Abstract

Dua puluh ekor kelinci dara New Zealand White siap kawin (BB 1,85 ± 0,03 kg) dibagi ke dalam 4 perlakuan pakan, yaitu: R1: ransum komersial (control), R2: ransum ampas the 30%, R3: R2 + Zn 50 ppm, R4: R2 + Zn 100 ppm.

Abstract

This study determined the effects of different flushing frequency on performance and blood metabolite profile of ewes and their suckling lambs at pre-weaning period. Twelve multiparous Garut ewes (2 years-old, BW 30.06 ± 6.20 kg) and 18 lambs born to experimental ewes (lambing weight 2.49 ± 0.56 kg) were used in this study. Ewes were randomly assigned into four treatment groups in a complete block design, namely: without flushing (T0: control), flushing at the beginning of mating (T1: 2 weeks before and after mating), two times flushing (T2: T1 + 4 weeks flushing at mid-gestation), and three times flushing (T3: T2 + 2 weeks flushing at before and after parturition). Three times flushing increased ((p<0.05) the crude fat intake, while different flushing frequencies did not affect (p>0.05) dry matter intake and intakes of crude protein, crude fiber, nitrogen-free extract, and total digestible nutrients of ewes at the pre-weaning period. Different flushing frequencies did not change (p>0.05) the productive performances of ewes during the pre-weaning period. Flushing application improved (p<0.05) the average daily gain of pre-weaning lambs at 14 days, but it did not affect the weaning weight of lambs. Two times flushing showed no pre-weaning mortality rate (p<0.05). Flushing application tended to decrease (p=0.08) blood plasma triglyceride of ewes at 21- days, while two times flushing frequency tended to increase blood plasma cholesterol (p=0.05) and triglyceride (p=0.08) of lambs at 21 days. In conclusion, increased flushing frequency supports ewes and their twin lamb growth performance and blood metabolite profile at the pre-weaning period

Abstract

Encapsulation technology was developed to address the issues of limited bioavailability and instability associated with black soldier fly oil (BSFO). This research synthesized a nano-emulsion of BSFO utilizing the ultrasonication method, while varying the sources of antioxidants (black seed oil (BSO) and curcumin) and emulsifiers (polyethylene glycol (PEG), whey protein isolate, and Tween 80). The FTIR analysis revealed that the nanoemulsion samples displayed peaks at 3500–3000 cm-1 (O–H stretching), 2900–2700 cm-1 (N–H stretching), and 1700–1500 cm-1 (C=O stretching), suggesting the presence of BSFO, curcumin, BSO, and the characteristics of the emulsifiers. Particle size analysis (PSA) indicated that the emulsion had an average particle size (Z-average) of approximately 229–686 nm. The nan’oemulsion containing PEG showed reduced particle sizes of 218 and 229 nm compared to those with other emulsifiers, attributable to the inherently smaller size of PEG. The HB (BSO with PEG emulsifier) showed a reduced particle size due to the smaller molecular size of the antioxidant BSO compared to curcumin. The polydispersity index (PI) values for HB and CB (curcumin with PEG emulsifier) were 0.3 and 0.2, respectively, indicating relatively homogeneous particles, consistent with the criterion of a PI value below 0.4. Biological assays showed that CB had the highest DPPH inhibition at 83%, while curcumin exhibited 90%, exceeding that of BSO. The inhibition zones of HB are 2.45 cm for Staphylococcus aureus and 2.70 cm for Escherichia coli, representing the highest levels of inhibition. In this study, PEG is the best emulsifier for achieving a smaller nanoemulsion particle size. PEG facilitates the incorporation of BSFO with antioxidants, enhancing stability, efficacy, and bioavailability in various applications, particularly in the medical and food sectors.
