Abstract

Mathematical problem-solving ability is an essential skill that supports students’ academic achievement and cognitive development. This ability includes understanding problems, planning solution strategies, implementing the plan, and reviewing the results. Based on preliminary observations conducted at SMPN 1 Tanjung Emas and SMPN 1 Sungayang, students’ mathematical problem-solving abilities were still relatively low. One contributing factor is the limited availability of innovative learning media that support the development of these skills. Therefore, this study aims to develop a Problem-Based Learning (PBL)-based e-comic as an alternative learning medium to improve the mathematical problem-solving abilities of eighth-grade junior high school students. This study employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach using the Plomp model, which consists of three phases: preliminary analysis, development, and evaluation. The quality of the developed product was assessed based on validity, practicality, and effectiveness criteria. The validation results showed that the e-comic (3.57), teaching module (3.60), and student worksheet (3.59) were categorized as valid. The practicality scores were 86%, 85.1%, and 87.87%, indicating that the product was very practical. Field test results showed improvements in students’ problem-solving indicators: understanding the problem (59.3%), planning the solution (54.2%), implementing the plan (44.5%), and reviewing the solution (44.4%). These findings indicate that the PBL-based e-comic is valid, practical, and effective in improving students’ mathematical problem-solving abilities.

Abstract

Problem-solving ability plays a crucial role in developing ideas and strategies to construct knowledge. However, students’ mathematical problem-solving skills remain low due to limited active learning and the absence of learning tools specifically designed to support this skill development. This study aims to develop a teaching module and an electronic student worksheet (E-LKPD) based on Creative Problem Solving (CPS) to improve the mathematical problem-solving ability of tenth-grade high school students. The research follows the Plomp development model with three phases: preliminary investigation, development, and assessment. The preliminary investigation includes needs analysis, curriculum study, concept review, student characteristics analysis, and literature review. The development phase involves designing the teaching module and CPS-based E-LKPD, followed by formative evaluations through self-evaluation, expert review, one-on-one evaluation, and small group evaluation. The assessment phase consists of field testing and analyzing problem-solving test results.Data were collected via validation sheets, interview guides, questionnaires, checklists, and problem-solving tests. The results show the CPS-based teaching module and E-LKPD are “very valid,” with validity scores of 3.51 for the module and 3.50 for the E-LKPD, covering content feasibility, presentation, graphics, and language. Practicality is rated “very practical,” with scores of 91.67% for the module and 85.59% and 86.28% for the E-LKPD. Effectiveness is indicated by an increase in problem-solving skills, with 71.88% of students achieving mastery. In conclusion, the CPS-based teaching module and E-LKPD on trigonometric ratios are valid, practical, and effective in improving students’ mathematical problem-solving abilities.

Abstract

Mathematical problem-solving skills is an important skill that students must possess because it can train critical, creative, and independent thinking in facing various problems. However, in reality, this skills is still not optimal, especially in solving problem-based problems. This study aims to analyze the skills of eleventh-grade students in solving mathematical problems related to the topic of circles, based on the stages of Polya's problem solving. This study used a descriptive quantitative approach. The research subjects consisted of 47 grade XI students from two classes. Data were collected through a mathematical problem-solving skills test and analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results of the study indicate that students' mathematical problem-solving skills are generally still relatively low. As many as 43.8% of students are in the low category and 39.6% are in the very low category. Based on the analysis of each indicator, students are relatively more capable at the stage of understanding the problem, while the greatest difficulties are found at the stage of planning the solution and reviewing the results of the solution.
