Abstract

Introduction: Increasing physical activity levels in middle-aged and older adults is a critical public health agenda, as regular physical activity reduces morbidity, healthcare costs, and chronic disease risks by up to 90%. Developing effective physical activity programs, however, requires comprehension of factors influencing physical activity behavior. Aims: This research aimed to develop a predictive model of social cognitive influences on moderate and vigorous physical activity (MVPA) in this demographic. Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 118 participants, 76% of whom were female. Social cognitive factors, which included self-efficacy, outcome expectations (physical, social, and self-evaluation), self-regulation (goal setting and planning), and social support (from family and friends) regarding physical activity, were assessed using validated self-reported questionnaires. A 7-day Physical Activity Recall interview was conducted to measure MVPA. Data were analyzed using bivariate correlations and stepwise multiple linear regressions, adjusted for sex and age. Results: All social cognitive measures showed moderate to strong correlations with MVPA (r = 0.43-0.79). The regression model, which included self-efficacy, physical outcome expectations, planning, and social support, explained 77% of the variance in MVPA. Conclusion: These results highlight the importance of strengthening these social cognitive factors to encourage more physically activity among middle-aged and older adults in Indonesia.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a significant global health issue requiring effective patient self-management to prevent severe complications like cardiovascular disease and organ damage. Health education is crucial for empowering patients, and booklets offer a cost-effective, accessible, and structured medium for delivering essential information. This scoping review investigated the use and impact of booklet-based education for DM patients. Following the Arksey and O'Malley framework, researchers searched CINAHL, PubMed, and Scopus databases for original English-language studies published between 2015 and 2024, using keywords related to diabetes, education, and booklets. From the search, 11 relevant articles were selected for analysis. The findings consistently showed that using booklets as an educational intervention effectively improved DM patients' knowledge, self-efficacy, and self-care behaviours. Key themes identified included the direct impact of booklets on knowledge enhancement, the benefit of combining theoretical information with practical application advice within the booklets, and the important role of family support in successful diabetes management, which can be facilitated by shared educational materials. The success of booklets is attributed to their structured format, ease of understanding, and continuous accessibility for patients. Factors influencing the effectiveness of this educational approach include patient literacy levels, the degree of family involvement, and the frequency of educational reinforcement. In conclusion, booklet-based education is a proven, effective strategy for improving self-management components in DM patients. The review highlights booklets as affordable and flexible tools, while also suggesting areas for future research, particularly concerning long-term clinical outcomes and the potential for integrating booklet content with modern digital health.

Abstract

This narrative review aims to explore community-based program interventions among patients with leprosy. This study employs the PCC (Population, Concept, Context) framework and collects data from six literature reviews accessed through the PubMed database. Keywords adjusted according to Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) terms ("Community-Based Program" OR "Community Intervention" OR "Community Health Program" OR "Community Engagement") AND ("Social Support" OR "Peer Support" OR "Community Support" OR "Psychosocial Support") AND ("Leprosy" OR "Hansen’s Disease"). Analysis of six articles, primarily from Asian and African contexts, reveals that community-based interventions are effective in reducing stigma, enhancing socio-economic participation, and strengthening leprosy detection and prevention strategies. These programs succeed through a multidimensional approach involving social support, education, and economic empowerment. The findings underscore that integrating psychosocial support and economic empowerment within community-led health initiatives is fundamental to achieving holistic and sustainable outcomes in leprosy care.

Abstract

Introduction: Nutritional problems in children, including underweight and stunting, remain a global health challenge, particularly in Indonesia. This study examines the influence of parenting styles and feeding practices on children's eating behavior, with family eating and activity habits as a mediating variable Methods: A cross-sectional survey design was employed in this study, involving 225 mothers of stunted and underweight children aged 2–5 years in Cimahi City, Indonesia. The study investigated key variables including parenting styles, feeding practices, family eating and activity habits, and children’s eating behavior. Data were gathered using validated questionnaires and analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) with the Partial Least Squares (PLS) approach. This analytical technique enabled the examination of complex causal relationships and latent constructs, including mediation pathways. The research complied with ethical standards and received approval from the Health Research Ethics Committee of the Faculty of Health Science and Technology, Jenderal Achmad Yani University, Cimahi, on May 31, 2024 (Certificate No. 086/KEPK/FITKes-Unjani/2024). Results: The results showed that parenting styles (? = 0.222, t = 3.630, p < 0.001) and feeding practices (? = 0.243, t = 3.640, p < 0.001) significantly influenced children's eating behavior. Family eating and activity habits significantly mediated the relationship (? = 0.448, t = 6.401, p < 0.001). Feeding practices and parenting styles also predicted family habits (f² = 0.369 and 0.462, respectively). Conclusion: These findings highlight the importance of family eating habits in shaping children's eating behavior and addressing malnutrition and stunting. Thus, family-based interventions are needed to improve healthy feeding practices and promote positive eating behavior in children at risk of malnutrition in Indonesia, aiming to achieve zero stunting and malnutrition.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Older adults are those aged 60 and over who experience changes and declines in physical function through aging. The physiological change that occurs is a decrease in leg muscle strength. Weakness in the lower extremities can lead to loss of balance and a tendency to fall. Efforts should make to improve and maintain the balance of older people's bodies through practical balance exercises to overcome the fall risk problem. This case report aimed to determine the effect of balance exercises on reducing the risk of falls. The descriptive method used is a case report approach with the Berg Balance Scale measuring instrument. The survey was conducted from 28th April to 11th May 2023. The results of the case report found that after carrying out a balance exercise, the client's fall risk score increased, namely a score of 28 (moderate fall risk) to a score of 41 (low fall risk). Suggests that balance exercises can reduce the risk of falls in older people. When doing balance exercises, older people should be supported by following the principles of balance exercises and performing them consistently for optimal benefit. Keywords: Balance Exercise, Elderly, Fall Risk  ABSTRAK  Lanjut usia merupakan seseorang yang berusia di atas 60 tahun yang mengalami perubahan dan penurunan fungsi tubuh sebagai akibat penuaan.
