Abstract

Based on extended Indonesia’s Social Accounting Matrix (SAM) 2015 and using the micro-simulation method, this study shows how sectoral growth affects income inequality and poverty in Indonesia and the contribution of the Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) manufacturing sector in reducing income inequality. Of the 24 sectors in Indonesia, only the growth in 10 sectors can reduce income inequality, with the largest reduction being growth in other agricultural crop sector. On the other hand, SMEs have no notable effect on reducing income inequality. Although the impact depends on which sector the SME is in. This study also shows that growth in all economic sectors has an impact on poverty alleviation in different contributions. Growth in other agriculture crop sector contributed the largest to poverty alleviation in Indonesia.

Abstract

Following the implementation of fiscal decentralization, the Indonesian government has employed natural resource revenue-sharing funds as a mechanism to allocate revenues from the mining sector to producing areas. Nonetheless, research regarding the effects of fiscal windfall from mining at the local level in Indonesia remains scarce. This study aims to address the research gap by examining the impact of natural resource abundance through the distribution of mining revenue sharing funds on poverty on Sulawesi Island, the biggest nickel-producing and processing region in Indonesia. Analysis of panel data from 51 districts in Central Sulawesi, South Sulawesi, and Southeast Sulawesi for the period 2017-2022, utilizing the Fixed Effect estimation method, reveals that mining revenue sharing, intended to mitigate the adverse externalities of mining projects and alleviate poverty, is not statistically significant. Sub-sample analysis reveals that mining revenue sharing correlates with a rise in poverty rates in Southeast Sulawesi, indicating the presence of the resource curse phenomena. Simultaneously, the contributions of mining and industrial GRDP, the human development index, and the proportion of “Program Keluarga Harapan (PKH)” recipients affected the alleviation of poverty. This research underscores the necessity for the government to account for local fiscal capability and institutional quality in the administration of mining revenue sharing funds, while also advocating for economic diversification to enhance the welfare of local populations.

Abstract

During the development of any economies, the structural transormation will put the services sector to yield higher role while leaving the primary and other goods sector in diminishing share. Using Input-Output model, we analyse the possibilities of making OKI Jakarta as services town. Based on total forward, total backward linkage and other analysis output, we conform the highest role of services sector in this province. We also find that the final demand for services sector is higher than its intermediate demand, showing this product of this sector is mainly used for direct consumption.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the impact of e-commerce adoption on employment absorption in micro and small manufacturing enterprises (IMK) in Indonesia. Utilizing data from the 2022 Micro and Small Industry Survey conducted by Statistics Indonesia, the analysis employs a Propensity Score Matching approach to address the imbalance in characteristics between e-commerce adopters and non-adopters. The results indicate that e-commerce adoption is positively associated with an increase in the number of workers employed by adopting firms. Business characteristics such as the presence of professional workers, business legality, and firm age are found to significantly influence adoption. Sensitivity analysis also shows that the estimates are robust against potential hidden bias. These findings highlight the importance of policy interventions that promote e-commerce adoption among IMK as a strategic effort to enhance employment capacity. Policy implications drawn from this study emphasize the need for cost-effective digital training programs, improved digital literacy, accelerated business formalization, and sectoral as well as business-cycle-based approaches to maximize the impact of e-commerce on employment in the IMK sector. With the right and targeted interventions, digitalization in the IMK sector has the potential not only to increase labor absorption but also to contribute to more inclusive and sustainable economic growth.

Abstract

The financial inclusion gender gap is one important issue that has become a global concern because financial inclusion can enhance women's empowerment in many aspects. Using the Fairlie Decomposition method, this study aims to describe whether there is financial inclusion gender gap in Indonesia and analyze what factors contribute significantly to the gap. It is one of the earliest analyses of the household financial inclusion gender gap and its underlying causes in Indonesia using the decomposition method, which is considered the most suitable for quantifying each factor's contribution to the gap. The findings reveal that female-headed households have less access to financial inclusion. The biggest contributions of this gap are explained by differences in socioeconomic characteristics among genders, such as the limitations of the female-headed household in owning a mobile phone, the lower participation in the formal labor market, and the lower level of education. Thus, policies that only focus on removing financial inclusion barriers from the supply side are not effective enough because differences in characteristics among genders or from the demand side have become the prominent cause of the financial inclusion gender gap.
