Abstract

Background: Hypertension is a common chronic condition in the elderly, leading to decreased independence in performing Activities of Daily Living (ADL). Family support is a key determinant in maintaining the independence of the elderly. However, the family's role is still not optimal. Health education based on family-centered nursing (FCN) is expected to empower patients and families to manage hypertension and improve functional abilities. Methods: A quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent control group was applied to evaluate the effect of Family-Centered Nursing (FCN)-based education on Activities of Daily Living (ADL) among elderly hypertensive patients. 64 participants meeting the inclusion criteria were selected using simple random sampling from the Rubaru Community Health Center, Indonesia. Data were collected using the validated Barthel Index questionnaire and analyzed with the Wilcoxon and Mann–Whitney tests using SPSS version 25. Results: Based on the paired t-test, the daily living activities score, p-value <.001, and the Independent test, p-value < .001 was obtained for both the control and treatment groups. This demonstrates the influence of family-centered nursing education on the independence of daily living activities of hypertension sufferers in the work area of the Rubaru Community Health Center. Conclusion: Family-centered nursing education has an impact and is effective on the daily living activities of older people with hypertension in the Rubaru Community Health Center (Puskesmas) area. It is recommended that the Community Health Center integrate family-based education programs into routine health services for the elderly.

Background: Leprosy has a long-standing history and continues to cause not only health-related complications but also major social difficulties. Individuals affected by this disease require interpersonal support to perform proper self-care and to minimize the risk of further transmission. This research sought to examine the effect of social group support on self-care practices among people with leprosy in Sumenep Regency, Madura, Indonesia. Method: A cross-sectional study was carried out between August and November 2021 in Sumenep Regency. The target population comprised 232 leprosy patients registered at 28 health centers, from which 145 participants were chosen using proportional random sampling. The research instrument was questionnaire covers two main domains: Social Group Support and Self-Care Behavior. Data were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) with SmartPLS.  Results: The findings revealed that social group support had a significant impact on self-care behaviors, with a T-value of 6.368 (>1.96). In addition, personal factors also influenced self-care, as indicated by a T-value of 4.110 (>1.96). Conclusion: Both social and personal support significantly enhance self-care behavior in leprosy patients. Strengthening group-based and individual support is therefore essential to improve self-care practices and decrease the likelihood of disease transmission.

Abstract

Background: The loss of a family member presents a deeply emotional challenge for older adults, often disrupting their physical, psychological, and social equilibrium. Elderly individuals experiencing grief commonly face intense sorrow, isolation, and alterations in their daily routines. Without effective coping mechanisms, these emotional responses may negatively impact their bodily functions and social relationships. This study aimed to explore the grief experiences of elderly individuals in coping with family loss using the Roy Adaptation Model as a guiding framework. Methods: A qualitative phenomenological design was employed, underpinned by the Roy Adaptation Model. Participants were selected through purposive sampling, with inclusion criteria consisting of elderly individuals aged 60 or above who had lost a nuclear family member within the past 6 to 12 months. Exclusion criteria included the presence of cognitive, sensory, or severe physical impairments. The study involved seven elderly participants, two family members, and one healthcare provider from Kalianget District in 2025. Data were collected via in-depth interviews and analyzed thematically through open, axial, and selective coding. Data saturation was confirmed after the seventh participant. The research adhered to COREQ reporting standards and received ethical clearance from the Health Research Ethics Committee of Wiraraja University (No: 1234/EC/2025) Result: Participants experienced grief through crying, withdrawal, and denial. Coping strategies included engaging in religious practices, sharing stories, and staying occupied. Four central themes emerged: grief experience, coping mechanisms, physiological changes, and interdependence Conclusion: Grief significantly affects the emotional, physical, and social well-being of the elderly. Support from families, healthcare professionals, and communities is vital to promote adaptive coping.
