Abstract

The sustainability of seaweed cultivation is influenced by multidimensional factors such as the quality of the aquatic environment, cultivation technology, economic contribution to cultivators, social conditions of the community, and government institutional support. This paper aims to reveal the leveraging factors for the sustainability of seaweed cultivation in the coastal area of Parigi Moutong Regency by using a multidimensional scaling approach and the RAPFISH application. The results showed that the sustainability of seaweed cultivation in the coastal area of Parigi Moutong Regency was in the less sustainable category. Leveraging factors that play an important role in the sustainability of seaweed farming are employment at the cultivator level and the feasibility of cultivation as a good factor, while the low quality of seeds of seaweed, socio-cultural capital, and fluctuating commodities prices are categorized as bad factors.

Abstract

Sago is a source of staple food for the people in the eastern part of Indonesia as it contains high carbohydrate.  Many types of traditional foods use sago as their raw material. This leads to sago being utilized as alternative food besides rice, corn and tubers to support the national food security. The utilization of sago for making traditional foods can potentially increase income of the people in general.  Advance in food technology has allowed the creation of delicious and nutritious food from sago processing.  The purpose of this study were to (1) determine the income derived from the business of traditional food made from sago, and (2) analyze the revenue contribution generated from the traditional food made from sago on household income of sago farmers.  Samples were selected purposively with the number of respondents was 10 sago farmers in Alindau village.  Data collected was through observations and interviews using questionnaires.  Quantitative descriptive techniques such as income and contribution analysis were used to analyze the data.  Alindau village is one of the villages in Donggala which still has sago palm plants.  The processing of sago starch is still done traditionally using a grated coconut.  The sago farm in Alindau village has not yet currently become the main source of income for the farmer families due to increasing illegal pruning of the plant leaves which then used for forage or sold leading to badly plant growth. The income generated from the sago farming was IDR 865,000.00 in average. However, as sago is only sold in the form of flour and no further processing has been done yet, there is no contribution coming from revenue generated from the processed sago, thus, the second purpose of this study was not achieved. Keywords: Income, Sago and Traditional Food.

Abstract

Cassava commodity has strong linkages with other industries. This is indicated by coefficient of its multiplier effect being greater than one. That means that investment of IDR 1 billion for the commodity will affect total economic activity of Central Sulawesi as big as the coefficient. The aim of this study is to estimate potentially competitiveness of cassava commodity of Central Sulawesi in international trade. In particular, the aim of this study is to estimate (i) potentially competitive advantage of cassava commodity; (ii) potentially comparative advantage of cassava commodity; (iii) level of governmental protection to price of tradable input for cassava; (iv) level of governmental protection to cassava outputs; and (v) level of simultaneously protection to cassava output sand tradable inputs for cassava. PAM method was used by using time series data of during 2000 – 2013 from BPS and FAO. The results of analysis shows that cassava commodity from Central Sulawesi has potentially competitiveness in international trade. This is showed by (i) potentially competitive advantage was indicated by PCR is less than one; thus cassava farm can be developed on a large scale; (ii) potentially comparative advantage was indicated by DRC is less than one; This means that in developing for cassava farm can be done by saving the resources; (iii) NPCR is equal to zero to show that government policies to tradable inputs is very protective, but actually that was caused by farmers didn’t apply fertilizers and pesticides;  thus developing for cassava farm can be done by organic farm, so cassava farm can be became as entry point in green economy of Central Sulawesi; (iv) NPCO is less than one meaning that government policies for output prices is in-protective, so cassava farmers didn’t enjoy actual prices of cassava output; and (v) EPC is less than one meaning that beside government policies for prices of cassava output is in-protective, government policies for tradable inputs is also in-protective; thus although the farmers didn’t enjoy the surplus prices, however they can pay tradable inputs being lower than actual prices of the tradable inputs.
