Abstract

This study on students’ points of view on English subject was conducted with the first year students at SD 1 Muhammadiyah Banda Aceh. The aim of this study was to address a main question called What are the students’ points of view on English subject?. In addition to this, finding out the students’ point of view on English subject was the aim of this study. The qualitative research employed interviews as the instrument. The interviews were conducted to explore participants’ experiences, perspective, and difficulties regarding the English language. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive analysis. The findings revealed that the majority of students responded positively to the questions. However, students confirmed that English is a challenging subject to learn. In conclusion, the study indicates that students hold a positive point of view on the English subject. The majority of SD 1 Muhammadiyah Banda Aceh first year students have favorable opinions about English subject.

Abstract

The objectives of this study were two points: first, to examine the implementation of collaboration techniques, and second, to assess students’ perspective to these techniques. The study focused on the students in the English department at the University of Muhammadiyah Aceh, with the sample consist-ing of students from the academic year 2021, 2022, and 2023, selected through random sampling. Data collection employed observation and interviews as instruments, with 15 students participating in the interview process. The observation results highlighted the prevalence of collaboration activities and think-pair-share as opposed to other techniques in classroom settings. Furthermore, students’ responses to the implementation of collaboration technique were predominantly positive. Notably, students expressed increased student engagement, enhanced communication abilities, a diversity of viewpoints, peer learning, critical thinking, and the acquisition of crucial life skills.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate undergraduate students problems in writing the Introduction section of their thesis. The study used the qualitative research method, employing interview to collect the necessary data. The study took ten students of English Education Department at Universitas Muhammadiyah Aceh, Aceh Province, as the sample. The technique used to analyze the data was descriptive analysis. The results of the study showed that most problems that students faced in writing thesis in the Introduction section consisted of lack of the supporting theories, lack of paraphrasing skills, lack of motivation, lack of grammatical knowledge, and lack of writing organization skills. One of the causes of their problems was low English competence. The students, however, tried to solve their problems by having routine consultation with thesis supervisors and reading many sources related with their thesis topics.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the questioning strategies employed by lecturers in English speaking class. The study used a descriptive method. The participants in this study were two English lecturers who taught English Speaking skills and ten students from English Department at Universitas Muhammadiyah Aceh, Aceh Province. Data were collected by means of interview and questionnaire. The obtained data were examined by analyzing the transcription of the interview and the questionnaire responses. This study found that lecturers utilized a variety of questioning strategies, including procedural, divergent, probing, specific, and open-ended questions. Lecturers employed questioning strategies in the English classroom by asking questions at the start of the teaching and learning process and after providing the learning materials.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the problems that parents faced and how they dealt with them during the online learning process. The study used the qualitative research method. The study enlisted 10 people (parents) as the participants to describe the type of issues that arose during the online learning process. The data were then examined through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings revealed that parents faced a variety of issues that hampered the learning process; the issues were primarily caused by a lack of a good phone, internet data, and poor connection. The study suggests that in order to fix the problems, parents should contact the teachers and seek help from others.

Abstract

In order to create an engaging teaching and learning environment, classroom management is crucial for teachers. In line with this, this study was to find out the teachers’ way in managing large classes and to know what strategies that used by the teachers when teaching the large classes. The design of this study is qualitative method. This study involved two English teachers at MTsN 3 Banda Aceh. The data of this study were collected through observation and interview. To analyze the data, Miles and Huberman’ concepts was applied. The finding of this study demonstrated that that the teachers of MTsN 3 Banda Aceh managed large class by applying the proper strategies to ease at teaching and controlling large number of students effectively. The implemented strategies by teachers included (1) planning the lesson plan; (2) creating the comfortable classroom; (3) grouping students and forcing discussion; and (4) making rules and providing learning media.

Abstract

The pandemic of Coronavirus has influenced all levels of education in the whole world. This impact forces the Ministry of Education to switch from traditional education to online education. As a result, educators must run this policy to teach the classroom and students must adapt to this situation. This research aimed to find out students' perception of online learning during the Coronavirus pandemic. This research employed the qualitative design and used the survey method to distribute the questionnaires. The object of this research was twenty-seven students of the English Department, University of Muhammadiyah Aceh. The obtained data was analyzed through descriptive analysis to see how online class is perceived by students during the pandemic. The result of this research shows that the students share the positive perceptions toward online learning during the Coronavirus pandemic. The finding also displays the hesitation of students in deciding the problem faced in having the online class.

Abstract

Community Service (CS) is one of the main pillars of the tridharma of higher education, aiming to apply science and technology to provide direct benefits to society. The implementation of CS in Lam Isek Village, Peukan Bada District, Aceh Besar, focuses on skills training in sewing, making instant ginger powder, and making dragon fruit syrup. This program is designed to enhance the villagers' skills in processing local resources into value-added products to improve their economic independence. The training, involving universities such as Universitas Iskandar Muda, Universitas Serambi Mekkah, and several other institutions, successfully improved participants' abilities in sewing, producing ginger powder, and making dragon fruit syrup. As a result, participants gained new knowledge and the potential to start small home-based businesses, which can increase income and strengthen the local economy. This program has a positive impact on the welfare of the Lam Isek community and can serve as a model for future CS programs.

Abstract

Textbooks play an important role in the teaching and learning process. In learning English, textbooks are an essential source of knowledge and information about the language. As a result, the use of English textbooks must be closely investigated. According to this issue, this study was conducted to analyze the English textbook used at the first level of secondary school from the perspectives of both teachers and students. This study was an explanatory sequential mixed method (a qualitative and quantitative research design). Purposive sampling was employed to select two teachers and twenty students from SMP Muhammadiyah Banda Aceh. The data of this study was gathered through interviewing teachers and distributing questionnaires to students. The qualitative data was examined descriptively, while the quantitative data was analyzed using percentages. The finding revealed that both teachers and students had favorable attitudes toward the English textbook. From the interview results, teachers believed that English textbooks were proper for teaching and learning processes in the classroom. Further, the result of the questionnaire identified that most students agreed that the use of English textbooks could effectively help them in learning English. As a whole, the English textbook meets the needs of students in learning English.

Abstract

Pelaksanaan pembelajaran General English di Pesantren SMA Islam Al-Falah, Aceh Besar, menunjukkan dampak positif yang signifikan dalam peningkatan kompetensi bahasa Inggris siswa. Pendekatan berbasis komunikasi yang diterapkan dalam pengajaran terbukti efektif dalam meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara, penguasaan kosakata, dan kepercayaan diri siswa. Integrasi nilai-nilai Islami dalam materi pembelajaran juga memperkuat pembentukan karakter siswa sesuai dengan visi pesantren. Penggunaan metode seperti task-based learning dan teknologi sederhana turut meningkatkan efektivitas pembelajaran. Namun, tantangan berupa keterbatasan fasilitas dan beragamnya kapasitas pengajar masih menjadi hambatan yang perlu diatasi untuk memaksimalkan hasil pembelajaran. Untuk mengoptimalkan pembelajaran General English, disarankan agar pesantren meningkatkan pelatihan bagi guru Bahasa Inggris, menyediakan bahan ajar yang lebih bervariasi, serta memperbaiki fasilitas yang mendukung proses pembelajaran. Selain itu, penggunaan metode yang lebih komunikatif dan berbasis teknologi, seperti pembelajaran berbasis proyek atau aplikasi belajar bahasa, dapat membuat siswa lebih aktif dan termotivasi. Dengan langkah-langkah tersebut, pembelajaran General English dapat lebih efektif dalam membekali siswa dengan keterampilan bahasa yang kompeten, sehingga siap menghadapi tantangan globalisasi.
