Abstract

Student participation in group discussions is an important indicator for creating active and collaborative learning in elementary schools. In fifth grade students at Muhammadiyah 1 Limboto Elementary School, there is still an imbalance in participation, where only a small number of students actively dominate discussions, while the majority tend to be passive due to internal factors such as low self-confidence, limited speaking skills, and differences in understanding of the material, as well as external factors such as group dynamics and teacher management. This study aims to analyze student participation in group discussions and the factors that influence it. The study used a case study approach with data collection techniques of observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis was conducted descriptively qualitatively with the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions/verification, as well as triangulation to ensure data validity. The results showed that student participation was not optimal, with low verbal levels and nonverbal/social dominance, influenced by the interaction of internal and external factors. Teacher efforts were effective through role allocation, creating a safe atmosphere, and motivation, although they need to be improved for equitable involvement. Student participation in fifth grade students at Muhammadiyah 1 Limboto Elementary School reflects psychological and social challenges that can be overcome with a systematic and inclusive teacher facilitative approach.

Abstract

Abstract

This article describes the portrait of conventional learning practices during the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum at SDN 1 Telaga Biru. The study was conducted through a qualitative descriptive approach using direct classroom observation, field notes, and simple documentation during the School Field Introduction Program (PLP 1). The findings indicate that learning activities are still dominated by textbooks, teacher explanations, and question-answer routines, while the use of alternative media and digital technology remains limited. This condition reflects a gap between the principles of the Merdeka Curriculum, which emphasize student-centered, differentiated, contextual, creative, and technology-supported learning, and classroom practices that remain teacher-centered. Several factors contribute to this situation, including limited practical training, uneven digital competence, teacher dependence on familiar routines, and the lack of continuous mentoring at the school level. The study concludes that curriculum transformation requires not only policy documents but also sustained teacher professional development, instructional leadership, collaborative reflection, and adequate learning resources. These findings are expected to serve as an initial reflection for prospective teachers, schools, and stakeholders in strengthening innovative and contextual learning in elementary education.

Abstract

Speaking skill is an essential oral communication competence that needs to be developed in elementary school because it supports students’ confidence, classroom participation, and ability to convey ideas clearly. This study aims to improve the speaking skills of fifth-grade students at SDN 17 Limboto, Gorontalo Regency, through the implementation of the Show and Tell method. This research used Classroom Action Research based on the Kemmis and McTaggart model, which consists of planning, action, observation, and reflection. The research involved 21 fifth-grade students and was conducted in two cycles. Data were collected through observation, interviews, speaking performance tests, and documentation, and were analyzed using descriptive percentage analysis. The initial observation showed that only 28% of students achieved the expected speaking criteria. After the implementation of Cycle I, students’ speaking mastery improved gradually through object-based presentations, guided discussion, and repeated practice. In Cycle II, the percentage of students who achieved the speaking criteria increased to 80%, while classroom participation and confidence also improved. These findings indicate that the Show and Tell method provides meaningful opportunities for students to practice speaking, organize ideas, use appropriate vocabulary, and present information in front of peers. Therefore, Show and Tell can be considered an effective instructional method for improving elementary students’ speaking skills in Indonesian language learning.

Abstract

Learning outcomes are an important indicator of the success of the learning process, especially in Natural and Social Sciences (IPAS) learning at elementary school. However, preliminary observation in grade V of SDN 07 Batudaa Pantai showed that students’ learning outcomes on the topic of harmony in ecosystems were still low because learning media were limited and classroom activities tended to rely on textbooks. This study aims to improve students’ learning outcomes through the use of UTAP media, a snakes-and-ladders-based instructional game adapted to IPAS learning. This research employed Classroom Action Research (CAR) consisting of planning, action, observation, and reflection. The participants were 15 fifth-grade students of SDN 07 Batudaa Pantai, Gorontalo Regency. Data were collected through learning outcome tests, observation of teacher and student activities, and documentation, and were analyzed using descriptive percentage analysis. The results showed that students’ learning outcomes increased from 40% in the preliminary observation to 73.4% in Cycle I and 86.7% in Cycle II. The use of UTAP media encouraged students to become more active, motivated, and involved in group discussion and question-answer activities. These findings indicate that UTAP media can create a more interactive and enjoyable learning atmosphere, support students’ understanding of ecosystem concepts, and improve learning outcomes in IPAS learning. Therefore, UTAP media can be considered an effective alternative instructional medium for elementary school learning.
