Abstract

Abstract. Being professional language teacher is principally about how teacher could understand and use the language orally and written well. Besides, professional teacher must also provide good assessment for their students. This study aimed to (1) measure to what extent does the implementation of peer assessment in Language Teaching Method (LTM) subject improve students performance; (2) identify problems appear in the implementation of peer assessment; (3) elaborate students' response upon implementing peer assessment. This study employed descriptive experiment design conducted in the 6th semester of 14 students of English Department, Unimus. The result showed that students performance upon the implementation of peer assessment in LTM subject increased significantly. There were several things to be underlined in this study, such as the high subjectivity in the process of assessing and the tendency of their unwillingness to be criticized. Therefore, generally students are encouraged and enthusiast in the learning process.

Abstract

Abstract. This study was intended to trigger students autonomy in joining Genre-based Writing class of State Universityof Semarang. Further, it was conducted to know how the students demonstrate their ability in using a set of tactics for taking control of their own learning. For this purpose, 30 students were randomly chosen and two observers involved in lesson study consisted of plan, do, and see. The result showed one of the indicators of succesful teaching and learning in the classroom was not only determined by interaction between the lecturer and the students in the classroom but also the use of lesson plan designed. In triggering the students autonomy in learning, the lecturer established a variety of instructional strategies focusing on academic expectations through the lesson plan. The lecture was designed to engage the students activeness and autonomy so that the goal of learning could be achieved well.

Abstract

In this digital era, learning English has become easier because of the media that can be used such as learning applications, websites, content that contains English learning and one that is still often used is interactive learning media. Therefore, the innovation of the Singular and Plural Noun application where this application is a learning media that aims to facilitate student understanding in grammar material and increase student interest and creativity to measure their abilities. The method used in this research is research and development using ADDIE (Analyzing, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation). The subject of this current study was class XI superior to as many as 35 students at Senior High School 15 Semarang. The results showed that the media is valid and eligible to be implemented in teaching grammar, especially singular and plural nouns to eleventh grade students. The impact of this implementation is to increase students' interest in learning and make it easier for students to absorb material about singular and plural nouns. Based on the results of the implementation of learning media, this SIPU application is highly recommended for English learning media to provide an overview of digital media and make it easier for teachers in interactive learning.

Abstract

Collaboration among teachers is required to make them discuss and share their teaching experiences, including some teaching and learning problems with others. Through collaboration in lesson study, it enables them to prepare meaningful learning to students and learning of 21st century. This activity involving six English teachers of SMK Muhammadiyah Pekalongan aims to improve English teachers in designing their lesson. Through lesson study conducted in one-month, English teachers’ awareness and willingness to collaborate each other showed improvement. They became more acutely aware of the necessity to analyze students' needs when discussing issues related to teaching and learning. Additionally, they might learn something from discussing best practices in teaching through lesson study. This condition affected their ability to compose their lesson design, provide students with relevant learning experiences, and help them develop 4C (critical thinking, creative, collaboration, communication) and HOTS (high order thinking skill) skills.

Abstract

This study was attempted to describe the effective use of Edmodo and Schoology in teaching speaking and the students’ perception of the application practicality in the learning process. It is an experimental study. The subject of the study was eleventh-grade students of MAN N 2 Semarang. There were two groups in this study; experimental group (E) at XI IPA 3 and the control group (C) at XI IPA 5. The research instruments were tests (pre and post-test), questionnaires, and audio documentation. The t-test or value obtained was (0.325) and t result was lower than t table (1.66724). Hence, it can be said that both the learning management system (LMS) using Edmodo and Schoology had equal effects to improve students’ speaking performance. It was proved by the mean value of pre-test and post-test, in which the experimental group was 67.71 and 69.71. Meanwhile, in the control group, there were 66.53 and 68.57. Moreover, the result of the questionnaire was 3.40 for students' perception as good criteria related to the practicality in the experimental group. Then, there were 3.42 on good criteria related to the practicality in the control group. It means that the teacher can use either Edmodo or Schoology LMS system in teaching speaking to achieve students’ speaking performance, particularly on pronunciation and grammar. In conclusion, Edmodo and Schoology are effective to teach speaking in eleventh graders.

Abstract

Reading is an activity to improve students' knowledge. However, some problems happened to Class X Social 4 SMA N 9 Semarang students. They had low activities in reading English text, so their vocabulary attainment needed to be improved. Based on the issues, this research discusses the effect of Kahoot! application and choral reading strategy to improve students' motivation in reading. It aims to know how choral reading strategy and Kahoot! can improve students' motivation in reading narratives and what factors significantly affect students' reading motivation. This research used classroom action research to collect the data and a quantitative approach to analyze the data. The subject of this research is the students' Class X Social 4 SMA N 9 Semarang. The result of this research got 47.83% of students with low motivation in English subject, and in the pre-test, students' mean score was 77.2. It was better after using the choral reading strategy and Kahoot! application. It could be seen from the students' mean score in post-test one that was 80, and post-test two was 87.82. All in all, students' reading motivation improved after using the choral reading strategy and Kahoot! Application in the teaching-learning process. Choral reading strategy and Kahoot! application is recommended to teach English material, especially in reading.

Abstract

Speaking fluency is a very important skill that must be mastered. Students' fluency in speaking can help them develop courage and confidence in interacting well with other people using English. This research aims to identify things that influence students' enthusiasm in conversation practice to improve their speaking proficiency. This research method is descriptive qualitative, using data collection techniques by distributing questionnaires to respondents to answer. The subjects of this research were second-semester students majoring in English education at Muhammadiyah University, Semarang. The results show that factors such as an interesting classroom atmosphere using practical practices that make the material interesting can increase students' enthusiasm in improving their speaking skills. This research provides important knowledge to create the development of more effective learning methods.

Abstract

This study examines the implementation of Game-Based Learning to improve the speaking motivation of students in class XII-3 SMA Negeri 4 Semarang. The problem addressed was the low participation of students in English lessons, particularly in speaking skills. This Classroom Action Research was conducted in two cycles, each comprising planning, action, observation, and reflection stages. Data collection was carried out through direct classroom observation and evaluation of students’ speaking presentations. The results of the first cycle showed some improvement, with 61% of the 36 students submitting video speaking assignments. In the second cycle, the integration of Cooperative Learning strategies such as the Gallery Walk led to higher student participation, with 94% achieving the target. The findings suggest that the Game-Based Learning model significantly enhances students' motivation and engagement in speaking activities.
