Abstract

Peat soils are planting media that possess several chemical limitations, including acidic soil pH, low availability of macro- and micronutrients, and low base saturation, which categorize them as nutrient-poor soils. The use of site-specific ameliorants such as boiler ash and chicken manure as alternative materials to lime can improve soil pH and nutrient availability in peat soils. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of boiler ash and chicken manure application on the availability of macronutrients and the growth of maize (Zea mays L.) in peat soil. The research employed a factorial completely randomized design (CRD) consisting of two factors: the first factor was the rate of boiler ash with four treatment levels, and the second factor was the rate of chicken manure with four treatment levels, each replicated three times, resulting in a total of 48 experimental units. The parameters analyzed included soil chemical properties and plant growth indicators (plant height and stem diameter). The results showed that the combination treatment A2B3 (2000 g boiler ash/polybag + 600 g chicken manure/polybag) significantly increased the availability of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, and Na, as well as improved maize growth (plant height and stem diameter) on peat soil compared to the control treatment.

Abstract

Pelaksanaan PKM ini bertujuan untuk melakukan penyuluhan kepada anggota kelompok tani Tuah Talino di Kelurahan Mayasopa Kecamatan Singkawang Timur Kota Singkawang Provinsi Kalimantan Barat dalam upaya meminimalkan pembukaan lahan tanpa bakar. Pembukaan lahan dengan cara membakar sampai saat ini masih dilakukan oleh beberapa petani, selain murah hal ini juga di dukung oleh Perda Kalbar No 1 Tahun 2022 Tentang Pembukaan Lahan Perladangan Berbasis Kearifan Lokal. Namun harus dilakukan secara terbatas dan terkendali, serta tidak boleh dikukan pada lahan gambut. Penyuluhan dimaksud dilakukan selama 2 bulan terutama pada saat masyarakat membuka lahan. Kegiatan penyuluhan salah satunya adalah untuk memperkenalkan jenis-jenis sekat bakar alami maupun buatan guna memitigasi terjadinya kebakaran hutan dan lahan. Disisi lain, juga menghidupkan kembali semangat gotong royong dalam masyarakat lokal, yang sudah lama menghilang, dimana hal dimaksud adalah gotong royong dalam membuka lahan menggunakan peralatan tradisional. Upaya ini sangat efektif dalam upaya menghilangkan pembukaan lahan dengan cara membakar, sehingga permasalahan kebakaran lahan dapat terselesaikan, selain itu juga dapat memupuk tali silaturahmi dan kekompakan antar masyarakat dan kelompok tani dalam upaya menjaga kelestarian lingkungan.

Abstract

Smallholder oil palm plantations established on Ultisols commonly face constraints related to low organic matter content and limited permanent ground cover vegetation, resulting in increased risks of soil degradation. This community service program aimed to enhance farmers’ capacity to propagate and implement Legume Cover Crops (LCC) as a regenerative agriculture innovation in smallholder oil palm plantations. The program was conducted with the Rimba Harapan Farmer Cooperative in Sintang Regency, West Kalimantan, Indonesia, using a Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) approach combined with field demonstrations, hands-on practice, and technical assistance. Vegetative propagation techniques were applied using the split-cane cutting method for Mucuna bracteata and stem cuttings for Arachis pintoi, followed by field implementation in dead-row interspaces of 11-year-old mature oil palm plantations (TM 11). Monitoring conducted 21–30 days after propagation showed that Mucuna bracteata achieved a survival rate of 90%, whereas Arachis pintoi exhibited a survival rate of 40% due to drought stress during the early establishment phase. The implementation of LCC in dead-row interspaces demonstrated potential to improve vegetation cover, maintain soil moisture, suppress weed growth, and reduce soil erosion and nutrient losses in smallholder oil palm plantations. The program indicates that simple vegetative propagation techniques can be effectively adopted by farmers and may support the long-term implementation of regenerative agriculture practices in sustainable smallholder oil palm production systems.
