Abstract

The aim of this research is to uncover the cultural phases of the Aryojeding site in Rejotangan, Tulungagung, through the lens of Van Perseun's cultural theory. There are two nearby relics at the site: the tomb of Ki Ageng Sengguruh and the Aryojeding temple or shrine. The research method employed is qualitative-descriptive.The findings reveal mystical elements, evident in myths and food-related artifacts. Ontological studies highlight traditions such as pilgrimage and the slametan ritual during the Satu Suro (Javanese New Year). From a functional perspective, the community regards this tomb as both a historical source and a cultural heritage asset worth preserving, leading to its designation as a "site" that is part of a protected cultural reserve. Additionally, the site has a caretaker (juru kunci), reinforcing its functional phase as an educational medium.

Abstract

This article is about the representation of Minangkabau tabedo in the novels of Minangkabau authors after PRRI (Pemerintahan Revolusioner Republik Indonesia). Minangkabau tabedo is a manifestation of the difficult and dilemmatic socio-ideological conditions faced by the Minangkabau people after PRRI. The data of this research are taken from the novels of Minangkabau authors after PRRI, namely Dari Puncak Bukit Talang by Soewardi Idris, Panggilan Tanah Kelahiran by Dt. B. Nurdin Jacub, Saraswati Si Gadis dalam Sunyi by A.A. Navis, Warisan by Chairul Harun, and Bako by Darman Moenir. The analysis of the novels is based on Lucien Goldmann's theory of genetic structuralism and its dialectical method, and is supported by Lotman's theory of narrative text regarding the elaboration of the structure of literary works as a conceptual construction centred on the idea of binary opposition. The findings of this article show that Minangkabau tabedo is a complex of ideas and worldviews of the author that are homologously expressed in the structure of the novel and the social structure of post-PRRI Minangkabau society. The representation of Minangkabau tebedo is seen through the changes taking place in Minangkabau society, such as the shift in Minangkabau family identity from matrilineal to patrilineal; changes in the behaviour of overseas Minangkabau who are uprooted from the roots of tradition, morality and religion; the diminishing role of traditional elites such as the mamak and alim ulama; the increasingly dominant role of fathers, eliminating the role of the mamak; the fading of communal culture and the development of individual lifestyles.

Abstract

This article is about the phenomenon of me(pe)rantau tragic among Minangkabau people in four novels by Minangkabau authors after Pemerintahan Revolusioner Republik Indonesia (PRRI), namely Panggilan Tanah Kelahiran by Dt. B. Nurdin Jacub, Saraswati Si Gadis dalam Sunyi by A.A. Navis, Warisan by Chairul Harun, and Bako by Darman Moenir. These famous novels after PRRI are sociological and philosophical based novels that express the author's worldview at the maximum level of coherence. In the analysis of these four novels, Lotman's narrative text theory is applied to elaborate the structure of literary works as a conceptual construction centered on the idea of binary opposition. Lotman's elaboration reinforces Eco's view that certain cultural units become meaningful when placed within another cultural unit that is opposed to them. Based on the analysis, the novels that are the subject of this study place the overseas world (dunia rantau) as a source of problems for the Minangkabau people. The characters who encounter the overseas world (dunia rantau) are positioned as "the disobedient" when they face the village world (dunia kampung) as an oppositional relationship.

Abstract

The emergence of the text/context debate in folklore research has facilitated new interpretations of how researchers approach their objects. Folklore research focusing solely on "text" has faced criticism for disregarding the contextual factors surrounding the genesis of folklore. This study compares the paradigm that perceives folklore textually with the paradigm that contextualizes it by examining the Romantic-nationalist and Performative paradigms. The use of the Romantic nationalism paradigm as a representative of item-oriented research is based on its historical, epistemological, and practical aspects. This study uses a qualitative methodology with a literature review to evaluate and synthesize existing research on the Romantic-nationalist and Performative paradigms in folklore studies. The primary distinction lies in focus: Romantic-nationalism views folklore as a traditional artifact that fosters collective identity, while the performative paradigm sees folklore as a dynamic social event in constant flux. While each paradigm has distinct strengths and limitations, synthesizing both offers a comprehensive perspective encompassing the static and dynamic dimensions of folklore. This study provides a framework for understanding folklore as both cultural heritage and a mechanism for constructing identity within dynamic social change.

Abstract

The novel Invisible Monster by Chuck Palahniuk reflects the phenomenon of body transformation, such as mutilation, which is considered by society as a deviation from the norm and is called a monstrous body. The discourse is expressed through the character Shannon who carries out facial mutilation; thus, providing space to better understand the phenomenon as an effort to deconstruct established norms. This study aims to investigate the form and factors of monstrous body transformation. To achieve this goal, the researcher used a descriptive qualitative approach by applying two theories, namely Steinhoff's Body Transformation theory and Bakhtin's Grotesque Body theory. This study found a monstrous body form in the form of a crushed face, experienced by Shannon. The crushed face was because Shannon shot herself in the face. Therefore, Shannon's face was destroyed, her jaw was open, her tongue was sticking out, and she continued to bleed and ooze. The crushed face deviated greatly from society's norms of ideal beauty; thus, it was called a monstrous body. Then, this study identified the factors of Shannon's monstrous body transformation, namely abberanormia, which was developed from the Body Transformation theory. Abberanormia was identified from Shannon's condition of wanting to break the norms of beauty not because she was unable to meet them, but because she had reached those standards and felt bored.

Abstract

Oral literature holds a strong attraction to cultural heritage, whether it is heritage in the form of differences or others, such as water sources, mountains, rivers, and forests that may have literature in the form of folklore, myths, mystical stories, or legends in a region. For example, Kulon Progo Regency, a regency directly bordering Magelang, Central Java, is the place where the history of the Javanese War occurred. There is no doubt about the natural beauty of Kulon Progo, such as mountains, peaks, tea plantations, caves, and equally stunning are the murmuring waterfalls like Watu Jengger Waterfall, hidden from the crowds of visitors. This research will delve into how the legends of Watu Jengger Waterfall have become oral literature that has been passed down through generations in Madigondo and have the potential to promote Watu Jengger Waterfall tourism. This research, conducted using the tourism literature method, connects oral traditions (lore) in the form of legends with their collective background (folklore). The research results show that the legends of Watu Jengger Waterfall dominate three forms of oral literature according to Albert B. Lord: formula, theme, and function. Watu Jengger Waterfall can be developed in the development of folklore-based literary tourism, with its legendary stories, both in oral and written literature. Attractions will be one of the most important components as a means of promotion to the general public through media.
