Abstract

The aim of this research is to analyze the influence of the Realistic Mathematic Education approach in the context of Malay culture in the Riau Islands on the learning outcomes of class VIII SMP students on flat-sided geometric building material. Quasy experiment with non-equivalent control group design was applied in this research. The research sample, namely classes VIIIA and VIIIB, was selected from all class VIII students at SMP Negeri 4 Bintan with a total of 99 students using a cluster sampling technique. The test instrument used is essay questions to measure student learning outcomes. Data was collected using a test technique, namely pretest-posttest and analyzed using an independent sample t-test with a significance level of 5%. Through the research results, a sig value was obtained. equal to 0.0125 and it is known that 0.0125 < 0.05 ( ). So it is found that the sig value. < 0.05 then H0 is rejected, meaning that the average difference in students' final learning outcomes has a significant difference. It can be concluded that there is an influence of the Realistic Mathematic Education learning approach in the Malay cultural context of the Riau Islands on student learning outcomes.

Abstract

This study investigates students’ mathematical critical thinking skills in solving Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) problems contextualised within Malay culture, focusing on two-variable linear equation systems. Although numerous studies have examined critical thinking in mathematics, limited research integrates local cultural contexts into HOTS problem design. This qualitative descriptive study involved three ninth-grade students selected purposively from different critical thinking categories (high, medium, and low). Data were collected through written tests and semi-structured interviews based on Facione’s six critical thinking indicators: interpretation, analysis, evaluation, inference, explanation, and self-regulation. The findings reveal distinct characteristics across ability levels. Students in the high category were able to interpret contextual information accurately, construct appropriate mathematical models, and explain their reasoning logically before concluding, although minor computational inaccuracies occasionally occurred. Students in the medium category showed adequate ability in identifying relevant information and modelling the problem but experienced difficulties in organising information systematically and formulating precise conclusions. Meanwhile, students in the low category demonstrated limited ability in translating contextual problems into mathematical representations and expressing coherent reasoning in written form. The integration of Malay cultural contexts supported meaningful engagement, yet critical thinking development remained dependent on students’ cognitive readiness. These findings highlight the importance of contextual HOTS problem design combined with structured metacognitive scaffolding in mathematics instruction.

Abstract

This study aimed to create digital teaching materials that help students understand abstract geometric ideas and promote active engagement in mathematics learning. The objective was to develop an electronic student worksheet (E-LKPD) using the problem-based learning (PBL) model and supported by Geogebra, for eighth-grade students studying three-dimensional geometry topics. The research employed the Research and Development (R&D) 4D model by Thiagarajan, encompassing the Define, Design, Development, and Disseminate stages. Data were collected through questionnaires and tests, including expert validation sheets, student response questionnaires, and learning outcome tests. The data were analysed using both qualitative and quantitative techniques. The results indicated that the developed E-LKPD met validity criteria, with average material validity of 89.13%, language validity of 80.66%, and media validity of 87.89%. The practicality level achieved an average score of 81.97%, indicating a highly practical level. revealed that the use of the E-LKPD significantly improved students learning outcomes and increased their participation These findings suggest that the PBL-based E-LKPD supported by Geogebra is suitable for use as an innovative teaching material to enhance meaningful mathematics learning.

Abstract

Abstract Mathematical critical thinking ability (MCTA) plays a crucial role in problem solving and reasoned decision-making, yet many students still struggle with fraction problems, particularly in providing justification, evaluating strategies, and drawing conclusions. This study aims to examine junior high school students' mathematical critical thinking ability in solving fraction problems using a mixed-methods approach. Unlike previous studies, this research integrates qualitative analysis with the Graded Response Model (GRM) to provide a more comprehensive profile of students' critical thinking ability. The participants were 27 seventh-grade students. Data were collected through a mathematical critical thinking test, questionnaires, and semi-structured interviews, and analyzed using the GRM and thematic analysis with methodological triangulation. The findings indicate that most students demonstrated moderate to high levels of mathematical critical thinking. Students with higher ability demonstrated stronger reasoning, justification, and reflection, whereas students across all ability levels struggled to evaluate solution strategies and draw conclusions. These findings highlight the importance of instructional practices that foster mathematical reasoning, evaluation, and justification.  Abstrak Kemampuan berpikir kritis matematis (MCTA) berperan penting dalam pemecahan masalah dan pengambilan keputusan, tetapi siswa masih mengalami kesulitan pada materi pecahan, terutama dalam memberikan justifikasi, mengevaluasi strategi, dan menarik kesimpulan. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengkaji kemampuan berpikir kritis matematis siswa SMP dalam menyelesaikan masalah pecahan menggunakan pendekatan mixed methods. Berbeda dari penelitian sebelumnya, studi ini mengintegrasikan analisis kualitatif dengan Graded Response Model (GRM) untuk menghasilkan profil kemampuan yang lebih komprehensif. Partisipan terdiri atas 27 siswa kelas VII. Data diperoleh melalui tes, angket, dan wawancara semi-terstruktur, kemudian dianalisis menggunakan GRM dan analisis tematik dengan triangulasi metode. Hasil menunjukkan sebagian besar siswa berada pada kategori kemampuan tinggi dan sedang. Siswa berkemampuan tinggi menunjukkan penalaran, justifikasi, dan refleksi yang lebih baik, sedangkan seluruh siswa masih lemah dalam mengevaluasi strategi dan menarik kesimpulan. Temuan ini menegaskan pentingnya pembelajaran yang mendorong penalaran, evaluasi, dan justifikasi matematis.

Abstract

English communication is an essential competency for office management students in vocational education. However, many students experience speaking anxiety, which may be related to their growth mindset. Growth mindset is considered important in language learning because students who believe their abilities can be developed through effort tend to take more risks in using the target language and recover more quickly from mistakes. Therefore, this study examined the relationship between growth mindset and speaking anxiety. This quantitative study used the Spearman correlation method with eleventh-grade Office Management students at SMK Negeri 1 Tanjungpinang as respondents (N = 108). The findings showed a significant negative relationship between growth mindset and speaking anxiety, with a correlation coefficient of -0.288 and a significance value of 0.003 (p 0.05). The results indicate that students with a higher growth mindset tend to experience lower speaking anxiety in English. However, the correlation strength was weak, suggesting that speaking anxiety is also influenced by other factors beyond growth mindset.
