Abstract

Abstract: The discussion of linguistic features and its relations to gender has been taken into various scientific studies as it further portrayed how men and women implement their language. This study especially aimed to determine the linguistic variations and the differences between men and women language represented through the characters in The Last of Us 2 video game. This study applied qualitative research method to present the data. Moreover, the guiding theory of women and men language by Coates (2013) was used in this study. The result of this study consisted of several points. The first result showed that the linguistic variations in terms of conversational strategies used by the male and female characters in the game are minimal responses, hedges, tag questions, questions, commands and directives, swearing and taboo language, and compliments. Meanwhile, the second result discovered the differences from the use of conversational strategies between women and men. The differences laid on the purposes and impressions aimed separately as women tend to soften their utterances while men tend to come off stronger. Therefore, men and women do not differ in terms of the conversational strategies, but the purposes and impressions of both parties contrast significantly.

Abstract

The title of this study is Figurative Language in Song Lyrics of Mini Album Butter BTS. It aims to analyze the types of figurative language expressed in the song lyrics of the BTS’s mini-album “Butter”, the first English single album by BTS. Two songs have been chosen as the data source, “Butter” and “Permission to Dance”. The data were collected using the documentation method and note-taking technique. A descriptive qualitative method was applied in analyzing them using the theory of figurative language proposed by Perrine (1977). The results show that six types of figurative language were found in the mini-album “Butter”. They are simile, metaphor, symbol, hyperbole, personification, and irony.

Abstract

This study is entitled The Meaning of Signs in Victoria’s Secret Advertisement. This study focuses on the analysis of verbal and visual signs in the poster available on the Victoria’s Secret website. It aims to identify the kind of signs implied in Victoria’s Secret advertisements and to analyze the meaning of the signs implied in Victoria’s Secret advertisements. This study used advertisements as primary data. This study applied the documentation method and note-taking technique in collecting data. This study used qualitative methods and the data was analyzed descriptively. The result of this study was presented in the informal method. Three theories were applied in this study. Dyer's (1982) theory was used to analyze the signs, particularly the verbal and visual signs found in the data. Then, the verbal signs meaning was analyzed through the theory from Barthes (1964) on the meanings of the signs and the color theory by Cerrato (2012) to analyze the meaning of the color in the data. The result shows that there are eight signs found in the data, four of them are categorized as verbal signs, and four others are visual signs. The verbal signs are visible through the placement, shape, and color of the texts, meanwhile, the visual sign focuses on the situation that happens throughout the posters. Based on the analysis, one verbal sign has a denotative meaning, another has a denotative and connotative meaning, and one does not have a denotative and connotative meaning, however, none of the data shows any myth aspects. Then, there is no dominant color found in the data because the colors in the data are different from one another.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze deixis applied in Spider-Man: No Way Home movie and its reference by using the theory of deixis by Levinson (1983) and theory of role of context by Dijk. This study applies descriptive qualitative research method in analyzing deixis and its reference applied in Spider-Man: No Way Home movie script. The procedures are: collecting data with observation method and documentation technique. This study applies the theory of deixis by Levinson (1983) and Dijk. In data analysis and presented descriptively by informal method. The finding shows that all types of deixis are applied in the data source with the quantity of 920 in total; person deixis: 692 data, spatial deixis: 28 data, temporal deixis: 18 data, social deixis: 14 data, and discourse deixis: 168 data. Person deixis consist of first-person deixis to identify the speaker, second person deixis used to appoint the addressee, and third person deixis refer to a person neither the speaker nor the addressee. Spatial deixis used to explain the location of certain utterance. Temporal deixis described an exact time of utterance. Social deixis illustrated certain relationships among characters. Lastly, discourse deixis functioned to refer to something that being talked about in the same utterance.
