Abstract

Outdoor sign of social campaign is needed to increase awareness and knowledge of the viewer and foster positive perceptions and behaviours. Social campaigns signs can be made by the government or private parties concerned about human living and usually placed in public places. This study aims to analyse social campaign outdoor signs’ verbal and visual grammar. The data were collected through photographic techniques by documenting the outdoor signs using a digital camera. The data were obtained from social campaign outdoor signs placed in the street of Jenderal Ahmad Yani as one of the main streets in Ruteng, Flores, Indonesia. The results showed that the government provides the outdoor signs of a social campaign to change people’s behaviour. The outdoor signs use local language in verbal signs. It represents an effort to facilitate the viewer to obtain the meaning of information given by the sign easily. It is also found that the social campaign outdoor signs use social language that tends to be more formal, and verbal signs are used dominantly. They are placed at the centre of the sign and are the most salient elements. However, other participants are as salient as the main element and are considered to reduce the viewer’s attention to focus more on the main element of the sign. Thus, it is recommended that the next study focuses on analysing the producer (government) motive to use more verbal signs in social campaign outdoor signs in Jenderal Ahmad Yani Street in Ruteng, Indonesia.

Abstract

This article discusses the morphophonemic aspects of reduplication in the Dawan language. The focus on morphophonemic studies is based on the fact that reduplication is a word formation process involving repetition, making exploring the intersection and phonological roles in this process interesting. Data were obtained through observation and interviews. Based on the collected data, it is evident that reduplication can occur with verbs, nouns, adjectives, and adverbs. For example, the noun neno, meaning 'day' has two forms of reduplication neno-neno, which functions as a noun, and "nen-neno," which serves as an adverb. The data also indicate that reduplication in the Dawan language consists of full and partial reduplication. Among these, partial reduplication is the most productive, while full reduplication is often used to emphasize objects or topics, suggesting a pragmatic aspect in full repetition. Common phonological processes found include sound elision and metathesis.

Abstract

This research examines the flouting of Grice's cooperative principle in the Indonesian drama series Kartu Keluarga. As the foundation of social interaction, effective communication requires an understanding of pragmatics, particularly how violations of the maxims of quantity, quality, relevance, and manner generate implicatures or implied meanings. The series' central conflict, which narrates the story of a single mother's fictitious marriage, triggers numerous deviant utterances that can potentially lead to misunderstandings. This study aims to identify the forms of maxim violations and analyze the reasons behind them. Using a qualitative narrative approach, dialogue data from the first episode were collected using the non-participatory observation method (SBLC) and transcribed. Data analysis was conducted using referential identity and distributional methods to decipher the implied meanings. The findings are presented descriptively to explain the phenomenon of maxim violation in the context of verbal interaction in electronic media.
