Abstract

BACKGROUNDS: Nurses are at risk for mental health problems while caring for Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients. The COVID-19 pandemic had impacted not only on emotions but also nurses' coping strategies. The difference between this study and previous research in this study adds up the total DASS 42 (Depression Anxiety Stress Scale) scores as parameter to assess mental health problems of the subjects. OBJECTIVE: To determine the association between coping strategies and the DASS score among nurses on duty in the COVID-19 isolation room of Dr Kariadi Hospital. METHODS: This cross-sectional study involved nurses who treated patients in the COVID-19 isolation ward, the COVID-19 intensive room, and the COVID-19 emergency room. All participants were involved by the consecutive sampling method. The research instrument used a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Brief COPE, and the DASS 42. Inclusion criteria included nurses who served in the COVID-19 isolation room and aged 22-60 years. Higher DASS score indicates that the subject is experiencing general psychological distress compared to subjects with a lower score. RESULTS: Most of the respondents in this study (n=112 subjects) had problem-focused coping strategies. The mean DASS score on the subjects is 14.29 ± 13.25. There was an association between coping strategies (p=0.048), sex (p < 0.001), place of work (p = 0.041), and DASS score. CONCLUSION: There was a relationship between coping strategies and the DASS score of nurses on duty in the COVID-19-19 isolation room. Further research needs to explore environmental factors and social support, also examine physical illnesses in more detail.

Abstract

Background: Schizophrenia is a serious mental disorder with various unknown causes accompanied by a collection of positive symptoms, negative symptoms, disorganization in thinking, speaking or movement and cognitive dysfunction. The therapeutic modality used to treat these symptoms is antipsychotic therapy. Over a certain period of time, the use of antipsychotics can cause hematological syndrome which affects the process of red blood cell formation and hemoglobin levels. Low hemoglobin levels can worsen neuronal function in the brain, thereby aggravating symptoms in schizophrenia. Aim: Analyzing the relationship between duration of antipsychotic therapy <2 years and ≥2 years with hemoglobin levels in schizophrenia patients. Method: This research is an analytical observational study with a cross-sectional approach in which research subjects were obtained using a consecutive sampling method from medical records of patients with schizophrenia (ODS) at RSJD Dr. Amino Gondohutomo Semarang (n=68) divided into 2 groups consisting of patients with a duration of therapy <2 years and a duration of therapy ≥2 years. The relationship between duration of antipsychotic therapy and hemoglobin levels was analyzed using unpaired t-test. Result:  The mean hemoglobin value for people with schizophrenia in the group with a duration of therapy <2 years is 14.09, while that in the group with a duration of therapy ≥2 years is 14.06 with a p value = 0.928. Conclusion: There was no relationship between hemoglobin levels in people with schizophrenia and duration of therapy both <2 years and ≥2 years.

Abstract

Background: The prevalence of stress in final-year students who were working on a thesis was still quite high. Unmanaged stress could bring a negative impact on the students themselves. Benson’s relaxation therapy was a relaxation that combined deep breathing techniques with faith factor and had been known to reduce stress levels. This relaxation was easy to do, safe, and didn’t require a lot of time and money. Research related to the effect of Benson's relaxation on student stress levels was also still limited. Objective: To analyze the effect of Benson’s relaxation on stress levels in students of the Faculty of Medicine Diponegoro University who were working on a thesis. Methods: Quasi-experimental study with pre-test and post-test design. This research involved 64 final-year medical students and divided into two groups. A consecutive sampling technique was performed. The experimental group (n=32) were instructed to do Benson’s relaxation therapy for 14 days, each day 2 session for 10 minutes, and the control group were instructed to not do any exercise and other relaxation. The stress levels was measured with the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS). Data’s significance was analyzed with paired sample T-test and independent sample T-test. Results: A significant decrease (p<0,001) in stress level before and after Benson relaxation, from 16,34 ± 6,91 to 11,31 ± 4,79. The post-test stress level of the experimental group (11,31 ± 4,79) was significantly (p=0,001) lower than the control group (16,09 ± 5,79). Meanwhile, there were no significant differences on the pre-test stress level between two groups (p=0,781). Conclusion: Benson’s relaxation reduced stress levels in students of the Faculty of Medicine Diponegoro University who were working on a thesis.

Abstract

ABSTRACT   Background: Schizophrenia is a severe mental disorder that associated with daily life and social function deterioration and could be accompanied with cognitive deficits. Meanwhile, hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy) is the increasing homocysteine (Hcy) level which might be the one of biological factor in schizophrenia. In recent study with healthy subjects, it was known that there was a correlation between total Hcy level and cognitive function. Folic acid is part of water-soluble vitamin B and expected to have important role in oxidative stress by preventing hyperhomocysteinemia. Objective: This study aimed to elaborate the effect of folic acid adjuvant to improve cognitive function in chronic schizophrenia patients. Methods: This was a double-blinded randomized controlled trial with pre and post-test clinical trial design. This study included 32 patients in control group and 32 patients in treatment group. MOCA-INA score was examined in all subjects on the first day. Then, all subjects were given standard antipsychotic treatment plus folic acid adjuvant / placebo during 3 week of hospitalized treatment and 1 week of outpatient treatment. When the 4-week treatment finished, the subjects were followed by MOCA-INA post-test.Results: In this study, we had the significant difference of pre and post-test MOCA-INA score in the control group (p<0.001), significant difference of pre and post-test MOCA-INA score in the treatment group (p<0.001), and significant difference of post-test MOCA-INA score between the control and treatment group (p<0.001).Conclusion: Folic acid adjuvants significantly improved cognitive function in chronic schizophrenic patients.
