Abstract

Abstract

Soy-based beverages offer numerous health benefits, but the presence of lipoxygenases causes an unpleasant off-flavor sensation that hinders acceptability. The addition of a suitable flavoring agent has been shown to enhance the acceptability of soy-based beverages. This study aimed to investigate preferences towards two flavored variants of soy-based beverages: original chocolate made from cocoa powder and vanilla made from vanilla essence. Before comparing the sensory parameters, which included appearance, taste, odor, texture, and overall assessment, the ratio of basic components such as soy and cow milk powder, sugar, and maltodextrin was studied. Fifty-seven untrained panelists evaluated the three flavored variants of soy-based beverages. The chocolate-flavored soy-based beverage received a significantly higher score in taste, odor, texture, and overall assessment (α = 0.05). Hence, adding cocoa powder as a flavoring agent in soy-based beverages effectively improved the sensory attributes.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aims to determine the effect of using gelling agent and chemical penetration enhancer on the solid dispersion Ibuprofen gel in increasing the transdermal drug penetration. Inhibition of the COX-1 enzyme caused by ibuprofen in oral administration can cause side effects of gastrointestinal disorders, dyspepsia, diarrhea, upper gastrointestinal infections, nausea and bloating, resulting in a topical route to reduce side effects. The gel is prepared using hydroxy propyl methyl cellulose (HPMC) and carbopol® as gelling agents, and also propylene glycol and glycerin as chemical penetration enhancer compounds. The gel evaluation are viscosity, pH, spreadability and penetration flux rate. The value of the formula 3 penetration flux is 1.5383 ± 0.029 ug / cm2.minute, the formula 1 is 1.403 ± 0.055 ug / cm2. minute, the formula 2 is 0.756 ± 0.071 ug / cm2 minute, while the formula 4 is 0.5404 ± 0.106 ug / Cm2. minute. The amount of gelling agent concentration and chemical penetration enhancer compound effect on the value of the flux penetration

Abstract

Avobenzone and octinoxate are often used as a combination of organic UV filters in sunscreen. At high exposure to UV light, these UV filters can be degraded so that their sunscreen’s effectiveness is reduced. Several studies reported that the combination of plant extracts with synthetic UV filters could increase sunscreen's SPF. Mango leaves contain high levels of flavonoids and in several studies have been shown to have photoprotective activity with good Sun Protection Factor (SPF) values. The Manalagi mango plant is a type of mango that is widely planted in yards, so it's easy to get the raw materials. This study aims to determine the effect of manalagi mango leaf extract with a concentration of 1, 3, and 5% on the physical quality (pH, viscosity, spreadability) and sunscreen activity (SPF, %TE, %TP) of sunscreen emulgel containing avobenzone and octinoxate. This study showes that increasing the concentration of manalagi mango leaf extract reduced the pH and viscosity of the preparation, and significantly increased the spreadability of all formulas. Besides that, it can also increase the SPF value and decrease the %TE and %TP values. The emulgel formula that had the highest sunscreen activity was F3 with an extract concentration of 5%, had an SPF value of 30.597 ± 0.600, %TE 0.0001 ± 0.0001, and %TP 0.0038 ± 0.0016.

Abstract

Sunscreen has two types of working mechanisms, namely chemical absorber and physical blocker. Sunscreens are usually made from synthetic chemicals, but currently there are many natural ingredients that have potential as sunscreens and are believed to have little negative effect compared to synthetic chemicals. One example of a natural ingredient that has potential as a sunscreen is kersen leaves. Kersen leaves contain quite a lot of flavonoid and polyphenol compounds, therefore cherry leaves have the potential to be an antioxidant and natural sunscreen. The effectiveness of cherry leaf sunscreen can be optimized by adding a physical blocker sunscreen ingredient, namely zinc oxide. Based on research results, the in vitro effectiveness value of sunscreen cream preparations provides the best results with an SPF value of 2.193 ± 0.152 which is included in the minimal protection category with a reduction in the percentage transmission value of erythema (%TE) of 1.513 ± 0.523 which is included in the sunblock category. and the percent pigmentation transmission (%TP) value was 1,378 ± 0.325, which is included in the sunblock category.

Abstract

Moringa gum is a natural polymer obtained from Moringa oleifera plant and has been used as a stabilizer, binder, disintegrant, and controlled release matrix. Moringa gum has a polyuronide group, which can potentially be a mucoadhesive agent. This study used moringa gum as a mucoadhesive agent in diltiazem HCl mucoadhesive buccal film. This research aimed to determine the effect of the combination of moringa gum and HPMC on surface pH, swelling index, and in-vitro mucoadhesive residence time. Mucoadhesive buccal films were evaluated for weight and thickness uniformity, folding resistance, drug content, surface pH, swelling index, in-vitro mucoadhesive residence time, and characterization in the form of FTIR and release studies. All formulations met the tests of uniformity of weight and thickness, folding resistance, and drug content. The results showed FB as the optimum formula with a surface pH of 5.803±0.101, a swelling index of 7.031±0.134, and a residence time of 505.67±4.51 minutes. FTIR showed no interaction, and the release study showed 82.197±1.178% release at 480 minutes. In conclusion, a combination of moringa gum and HPMC mucoadhesive buccal film has been successfully prepared with moringa gum as a mucoadhesive agent that increases the residence time.
