Abstract

Recently, there are many hepatotoxicity case reports induced by energy drinks and its niacin content is assumed to be the cause of liver injury. Caffeine in energy drinks actually has a hepatoprotective effect. However, this hepatoprotective effect of caffeine is less potent in counteracting the hepatotoxic effect of niacin. This study aimed at determining niacin and caffeine influences in inducing the disruption of liver physiology and the dose of niacin and caffeine in energy drink model which can induce the disruption of liver physiology by measuring AST, ALT, and GGT. As many as 28 male albino wistar rats were divided into seven groups;1 control group and 6 experimental groups, for 49 days. At day 50th, the rats were terminated to measure the AST, ALT, and GGT. The AST and ALT enzyme levels were not significantly correlated (p> 0,05). Otherwise, the GGT enzyme level was significantly correlated (p<0,05). It was showed that niacin and caffeine elevate GGT enzyme at doses 0,491 mg/ 200gr body weight/ day niacin and 1,2275 mg/ 200gr body weight/ day caffeine. These doses are equal to the consumption of three packs of energy drinks per day in human. Keywords: niacin, caffeine, energy drinks, AST, ALT, GGT

Abstract

Insulin resistance is a condition in which target organs fail to respond normally to insulin. Cassava contains 9,69 percent starch that resist to digestive enzyme in intestine and has been shown to increase insulin sensitivity and enhance β cell function. The aim of this study was to analyze the difference effect of native cassava starch and cassava resistant starch consumption on insulin resistance and β cell function indexes. This study was quasy experimental research with post-test only control group design using 16 male wistar strain rats divided into four groups: K1 (normal rats with standard diet), K2 (diabetic rats with standard diet), P1 (diabetic rats with native cassava starch diet) and P2 (diabetic rats with cassava resistant starch diet). The rats were fed with high fat diet and injected with low-dose streptozotocin to mimic the patogenesis of type 2 diabetes. The rats were then fed with assigned diet for 28 days. The data collection was obtained from laboratory examination of fasting plasma glucose and fasting plasma insulin to determine HOMA-IR and HOMA-B indexes. Post Hoc analysis showed no difference in both indexes between native cassava starch and cassava resistant starch fed groups (p>0,05).

Abstract

Vibrio cholerae is one of the most common bacteria causing acute diarrhea. First-line treatment of diarrhea is tetracycline. However, the drug has some side effects. Therefore it is necessary to have an alternative therapy for V. cholerae especially from herbs. The purpose of this study was to determine the ability and the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of Mirabilis jalapa leaves extract in inhibiting the growth of V. cholerae in in vitro method. This research used a Quasi Experimental Design with Post Test Only Control Group Design. The method of this study used diffusion method on Mueller Hinton Agar. The sample used was V. cholerae culture from the Laboratory of Microbiology Medical Faculty Brawijaya University. The inhibition growth of V. cholerae was observed start at a concentration of 1 mg/ml and increased by increasing concentrations of the extract. Spearman correlation test showed value p=0.000 and r=0.993, indicating significant correlation between the leaves extract of M. jalapa and V. cholerae diameter inhibition zone. These results indicated that M. jalapa leaves extract could inhibit the growth of V. cholerae and had qualitatively MIC 1 mg/ml, while quantitatively 0.2 mg/ml. Abstract

The inhibition of cyclooxygenase 1 (COX-1) enzyme leads to the decrease of tromboxane A2 (TXA2) and decrease the activity of platelet aggregation that marked by the lengthening of bleeding time. This mechanism is important to prevent the occurence of patology that can lead to thrombosis. Flavonoid, polyphenol present in the mango peel, is known to have activity for blocking the COX-1 enzyme. The aim of this research was to know the effect of Arumanis mango peel extract for lengthening the bleeding time on white male mice. The research was true experimental. The sampel was treated for seven days and the bleeding time was measured on the seventh day. The result of analyses Kruskal Wallis shows that there are significant difference intern-treatment group with significance (p) 0.033. The Mann Whitney analyses test shows significant difference between treatment group 2 (P2), treatment group 4 (P4), treatment group 5 (P5) and negative control group (K-). So, it can be concluded that arumanis mango peel extract can lengthening the bleeding time of white male mice. The dosis of 16,8 mg.grBBof mango peel extract givesthe longest mean bleeding timeand it exceeds the mean of positive control group. Keywords: bleeding time, mango, flavonoid
