Abstract

As part of carbon pools, forest soil stores soil organic matter (SOM) that contains many elements including organic C, N, P, and K. These elements contribute nutrients for biogeochemical cycles within the ecosystem. This study was done to determine the ecological value of forest soil organic matter at tropical evergreen Aglaia-Streblus forest of Meru Betiri National Park (MBNP), East Java, Indonesia. The data were sampled along gradient topography in Pringtali tropical forest of TMBNP. Direct measurements of soil moisture, temperature, and pH were taken in the field. The soil samples were extracted from 6 points of soil solum using soil auger, and then oven-dried to get value of dry-weight. The elements content of organic C, N, P, and K were analyzed and estimated at the laboratory. The ecoval of SOM was appraised using developed ecological valuation tool. The result showed that SOM contributed higher ecoval of organic C (66.03 Mg ha-1) than other elements. Compared to P and K elements, N had the highest stock of element content. However, comparing to other two tropical forest ecosystems of Asia the ecoval of SOM elements in TMBNP was relatively low because of its natural geomorphological features. The ecoval of SOM elements in TMBNP was relatively low because of its natural geomorphological features. The ecovals contributed about 2.440,64 - 6.955,50 USD or 31.271.923,73 - 89.120.837,23 IDR per hectare of ecological value (d) to the ecosystem. This value was mainly contributed by organic C stock in the TMBNP forest SOM. It means the forest SOM had higher element content of organic C than N, P, and K elements. This d value is an indicator for TMBNP to protect the SOM elements meaning protecting their resources to sustain the biogeochemical cycles in the forest ecosystem. All the management and policy correlated to this protected area should consider this valuable information for their plan and actions.

Abstract

Seagrass ecosystems represent one of the most important coastal ecosystems due to their crucial ecological role in maintaining marine environmental balance. This study aims to identify and analyze the community structure of Echinodermata from the classes Ophiuroidea, Echinoidea, and Holothuroidea in the seagrass ecosystem of Sijile Beach, Baluran National Park. Sampling was conducted using a systematic transect-plot method across 10 transects and a total of 100 plots. The results revealed seven Echinodermata species, with Ophiocoma scolopendrina being the most dominant (6.15 ind/m²). The Shannon-Wiener diversity index (H') was 0.98, indicating low species diversity. This low diversity is attributed to the dominance of specific species and uneven individual distribution. Although seagrass serves as a crucial habitat supporting Echinodermata survival, environmental conditions and species-specific adaptations play key roles in shaping the community structure. These findings highlight the importance of ecological studies for the conservation and management of coastal resources.

Abstract

The Biosite Pangpang Bay Ijen Geopark (BPBIG) has a high potential biodiversity value outside the conservation area, particularly in the mangrove forest. Namun informasi keragaman ini masih belum sepenuhnya lengkap. Sehingga penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menentukan keragaman jenis burung di hutan mangrove BPBIG. The research was conducted on October 2023 using the point count method at six observation points in the mangrove forest. Data analysis was carried out in two approaches, i.e., species composition and species diversity index using Shannon Wiener index (H’). We recorded 39 bird species, consisting of 32 genera and 21 families, in the mangrove forest of BPBIG. There is one bird species that has important conservation status based on the IUCN Red List and National Regulation, namely L. javanicus (a vulnerable and protected species). Furthermore, there are also three migratory birds (T. sanctus, N. phaeopus, and A. hypoleucos) that use the mangrove forest of BPBIG as stopover sites during migration periods. The results of the Shannon Wiener index showed that the bird diversity in the BPBIG mangrove ecosystem is in the medium category (H' = 2.02). Finally, based on these results, it can be concluded that the bird species in the mangrove forest of BPBIG are quite diverse.

Abstract

The rehabilitation zone of Meru Betiri National Park (MBNP) needs to be measured in relation to the success of ecosystem restoration. It can be used as a bioindicator, such as the bird community structure, hence their sensitivity to environmental changes. Therefore, the aims of this study are to determine the community structure of avifauna in the rehabilitation zone at Wonoasri Resort, MBNP including bird diversity, richness, dominance, feeding guilds, and their correlation with forest cover. The research was conducted in January 2023 in the Bonangan Block at three observation points, namely low vegetation cover, medium vegetation cover, and high vegetation cover. The ecological data, such as species and abundance, were collected using the point count method, while additional information related to conservation statuses were collected by web browsing on the IUCN Red List, the CITES appendix, and Indonesian government regulation (LHK No.106/2018). Data analysis used the dominance index, species diversity index (Shannon Wiener), and evaluated for statistical data using a Kruskal-Wallis (KW) test in R version 3.2.1. We recorded 38 bird species belonging to 31 genera and 21 families during this study. Among the feeding guilds, the insectivorous birds (14 species) were recorded as the higher species richness, followed by omnivorous (eight species), frugivorous (five species), granivorous (five species), carnivorous (four species), and nectarivorous (two species). The Kruskal-Wallis test shows there is a significant correlation among the feeding guilds (value of 11.644, with p-value = 0.040). Furthermore, referring to species richness, high vegetation cover areas have the highest species richness (30 species) compared to medium vegetation cover areas (27 species) and low vegetation cover areas (26 species). The dominance of avifauna species at this location falls into the low category (C = 0.07). According to the diversity index, avifauna in Bonangan Block is classified as a high category (H'=3.01).

Abstract

Jember Regency encompasses several plantation areas characterized by diverse ecological conditions, notably the Gumitir, Garahan, and Tancak plantations. Among the flora in these regions, the genus Hoya is notable for its medicinal potential. This study aimed to characterize the diversity of Hoya species, provide detailed morphological documentation, and evaluate the phytochemical and antioxidant properties of a medicinally used species. Field exploration employed a systematic plot-based design consisting of 150 plots (5 × 5 m²) with 3 m spacing. The most vegetatively dominant species, Hoya lacunosa, was subjected to GC–MS phytochemical analysis and DPPH-based antioxidant evaluation. A total of eleven Hoya species were recorded across the three plantation sites. The Gumitir plantation exhibited the highest diversity, containing ten species., i.e. Hoya burtoniae, H. camphorifolia, H. carnosa, H. cinnamomifolia, H. dennisii, H. fuscomarginata, H. lacunosa, H. micrantha, H. purpureofusca, and two unidentified Hoya spp. In contrast, the Garahan plantation supported only H. dennisii and H. fuscomarginata, while H. lacunosa was exclusively found in Tancak indicating a highly localized distribution. GC-MS profiling on H. lacunosa leaves revealed 26 compounds, comprising 16 secondary metabolites (12 phenolics, 2 alkaloids, and 2 terpenes) and 5 primary metabolites. The methanol extract exhibited strong antioxidant activity (IC₅₀ = 50.89 ppm), reflecting its potential as a natural source of bioactive compounds. These findings demonstrate substantial Hoya diversity in Jember Regency and underscore the potential of H. lacunosa as a valuable source of bioactive metabolites for pharmaceutical development.
