Abstract

Despite participating in PISA for more than 10 years, Indonesian students' mathematics achievements still tend to be low. On the other hand, PISA 2018 shows that students in two provinces, namely (1) Special Region of Yogyakarta, and (2) Special Region of Capital City Jakarta, exhibit higher mathematics achievement than students from other provinces. This research aim is to examine factors affecting students' mathematics performance in these three regions. We carried out statistical multilevel analysis with a random effects model using R software. Based on this analysis, we find differences in factors that influence students' mathematics achievement from three provinces. Variables that significantly influence students’ mathematics achievement in the three regions are parent support, home support, students' mastery goals, and students' competition. The only variables that were significant outside Special Region of Yogyakarta and Special Region of Capital City Jakarta were students' beliefs and students' ESCS. In the three provinces, the variables growth mindset, gender, and father's education level did not affect students' mathematics achievement.

Abstract

Investigating the low mathematics scores of Indonesian students on the PISA assessment can be done by examining the influence of measured predictors, including teacher competence and school resources that have not attracted the attention of Indonesian mathematics education researchers. The research focused on the effect of teacher competencies and the shortage of school resources on students’ mathematics achievement. Secondary data were retrieved from the official PISA website, involving 9,721 students aged 13-15 years from 332 schools after deleting the missing data. All students and schools were recruited using a stratified-two stage sample design and did not meet the exclusion criteria. Multilevel analysis was used to determine the significance of predictors of interest on students’ mathematics achievement. The analysis showed that adaptive teaching, teacher emotional support and teacher enthusiasm contributed to increase students’ mathematics achievement while teacher feedback and the shortage of school resources significantly decreased students’ mathematics achievement. These findings can assist policymakers in setting educational priorities especially related to what teacher competencies should be developed and procurement of school resources.

Abstract

Several studies have attempted to investigate the influence of gender differences on aspects of mathematics-anxiety (MA) and self-efficacy (SE) at various levels of education. However, exploration focusing on junior high school students is still limited, so it is important to understand how these dynamics develop at that level of education. Therefore, to overcome the gap, this study aims to investigate the influence of gender differences on MA and SE junior high school students. The type of research used is quantitative research with a comparative causal method. The population is all students in grades VII, VIII, and IX in one of the private junior high schools in Central Java. The sample of this study is 79 students, consisting of 39 male students and 40 female students. The sampling technique is stratified random sampling with strata based on grade level (VII, VIII, IX). The data collection technique used a questionnaire about MA and SE. Data analysis techniques using Hotelling's T^2 to test the significance of the differences in MA and SE aspects based on gender simultaneously and the Independent Sample T-test to test the significance of gender differences in each variable separately. Hotelling's T^2 test showed a significant influence of gender differences on MA and SE simultaneously. The Independent Sample T-test found that the female group was more anxious than the male and there was no significant difference in their SE. Therefore, it can be concluded that there is a gender gap in MA, but not in SE.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Indonesia is a country that ranks 5th with around 19.5 million people with diabetes mellitus in 2021 based on the International Diabetes Federation 2021 report. According to the BPS publication in 2022, since 2021 Indonesia has entered an old population structure, about 1 in 10 residents are elderly (elderly). The Indonesian population aged between 45-59 years is categorized as pre-elderly and above 60 years is categorized as elderly. In general, diseases experienced by the elderly are non-communicable diseases, such as diabetes mellitus, heart disease, and hypertension. The purpose of this study is to determine the risk factors that affect diabetes mellitus status (yes / no) in pre elderly and elderly using a binary logistic regression model. The data was analysed using binary logistic regression model because the response variable is binary. The results showed that the risk factors that had a significant effect on the logit of the chances of suffering from diabetes mellitus were the IMT variable (normal, obese, obese), the last level of education (high), subjective socioeconomic status (medium), elderly age, physical activity, hypertension, consuming sweet foods, general health checks and the area of residence. Respondents who are in the elderly category have a higher chance of 1.383 times to suffer from diabetes mellitus compared to those who are pre-elderly.

Abstract

How School Culture and Climate Mediated Student’s Mathematics Achievement: a Path Analysis of PISA 2022 Indonesia Data. Indonesia’s declining mathematics performance in PISA 2022 highlights the need to examine key educational factors affecting student achievement. In the post-pandemic context, school culture and climate have become increasingly important in shaping learning outcomes. This study investigates how these factors mediate the effects of teacher support, gender, and socioeconomic and cultural status (ESCS) on students’ mathematics achievement. Objectives: This study aims to: (1) examine the effects of teacher support, gender, and socioeconomic and cultural status on school climate and culture indicators (bullying victimization, sense of belonging, feeling safe, and school safety risks); (2) assess the influence of these indicators on students’ mathematics achievement; (3) analyze the direct effects of the independent variables on mathematics achievement; and (4) evaluate the mediating role of school climate and culture in these relationships. Methods: This quantitative study used cross-sectional data from the PISA 2022 Indonesia dataset, comprising 12,491 students from 410 schools. Data were analyzed using a parallel multiple mediation model with path analysis, employing Maximum Likelihood estimation and nonparametric bootstraping with 1,000 replications. Findings: The results showed that all independent variables significantly affected all four indicators of school culture and climate. Bullying victimization, lack of feeling safe, and school safety risks had significant negative effects on math achievement, while a sense of school belonging had a significant positive effect. Teacher support and gender had significant negative effects on mathematics achievement, while socioeconomic and cultural status had significant positive effects. All mediating variables significantly mediated the relationships between the independent variables and math achievement. Conclusion: Interventions to improve math achievement should not rely solely on direct teacher support, but also prioritize building a positive school climate by strengthening students’ sense of belonging and reducing bullying as these are critical pathways influencing academic success. Keywords: PISA 2022, mathematics achievement, path analysis, mediation model.

Abstract

Pendekatan berbasis simulasi memiliki kelebihan tanpa adanya pemenuhan asumsi klasik.

Abstract

The level of the populations well-being can be measured by using a subjective well-being indicator which is called happiness, which can be affected by various factors from individuals. However, the background of individuals in a group cannot be ignored. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the factors that affect the level of happiness in Southeast Asian countries at the individual and country levels. Data came from World Value Survey (WVS) Wave 7 with 11,387 individuals from the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. Data were analyzed using an ordinal response multilevel model with the level of happiness as a response variable. The results showed that the happiness level was affected by gender, marital status, health status, income, religiosity, education level, life satisfaction, and freedom of choice. However, age at the individual level and variables at the country level did not affect the happiness level.
