Abstract

This study aimed to describe (1) what is the strategies that teacher’s use in assessing young learners’ speaking skill (2) To know the problems faced by teacher in assessing young learners’ speaking skill. Assessing speaking skills for young learners is one of the difficult tasks in language learning because young learners’ have higher activity levels and easily distracted by others. English teachers need to be competent in applying strategies in conduct speaking assessment for young learners’. The research was conducted at SD GenBi School Medan. This research used descriptive qualitative method. The subject of this research was English teacher of SD GenBi School Medan. The data were obtained through observation, and interview. The data were analyzed by qualitative data analysis technique which consists of three events, namely ; data reduction, data presentation, and make a conclusion of data. The findings showed that the teacher use various strategies when conducting the speaking assessments, namely; Picture Talks, Story-telling, Oral Presentations, Answering Open-questions, Minidialogues and role-plays, and Word Repetition Tasks. But in its, the teacher faced some problems. The problem was time limitation. Furthermore, speaking assessments strategies is very difficult to address to young learners' whereas teachers must look at young learners' ability to focus individually. And it took a lot of time.Keywords: Young Learners’, Assessments, Assessments Strategies, Speaking Skill.

Abstract

Developing English Digital Conversation Media for Speaking Activities Based on Task Based Learning. A Thesis. English Educational Program, State University of Medan, 2020. This research was aimed to develop English digital conversation media for speaking activities based on the students’ need at SMAN 1 Kec. Binjai Kab.Langkat. This research was conducted by using Research and Development (R&D) method. There were seven steps applied in this research, the steps were: 1). Potential and Problem 2). Gathering data and information 3). Product design 4). Validating to experts 5). Revising Design 6). Product test 7). Final product revision. The subject of this research was tenth grade students of social science at SMAN 1 Kec. Binjai Kab. Langkat. The instruments of collecting data were questionnaires and interview. The data analyzed by using descriptive technique. Need analysis questionnaire was calculated using percentage by Suharto (2006) to get an information of students’ need before developing digital conversation media. Expert judgment data were calculated by using Likert Scale, mean and criteria interval of expert judgment to know the validity of digital conversation media which has been develop. The result of expert validation was 4,5 which mean English conversation media is Very Good category. Therefore the media is appropriate to use in the tenth grade students of SMA N 1 Kec.Binjai Kab.Langkat to teach speaking. Abstract

This research has aims to develop English speaking materials for grade X culinary study program at SMKN 10 Medan, first this research was conducted by Research and Development through has Six stages, they are: gathering information and data, analyzing data, designing new materials, validating by the experts, revising and the last was Final product. The subject in this research was students grade X boga 3 at SMKN 10 Medan where the students consisting of 36 students, the instrumentations for data collection  were giving a questionnaire and interview, questionnaire was administrate and it answer by the students to get the students need, and the interview was administrate to the English teacher, the result of the questionnaire and interview prove that the student need some appropriate speaking material in descriptive text that has relation with their program study, that is culinary. Thus, developing English speaking materials consist of three units: lets’ talk about chef Juna (describing People), how the smell, taste and texture of your favorite food? (Describing things) and the last units was talk about famous restaurant (Describing Place). The product has been validated by two experts, and the average score are 4, 75 are coming from English Lecture’s, the second average score 4, 89 are coming from English teacher. From the score above, it means that the product categorized as relevant for grade X students of culinary study program.Key words: R&D, English for Specific Purposes, English speaking materials, culinary study program.
