Abstract

Water-quality monitoring using macroinvertebrates has been developed by several countries to determine their water qualities. Meanwhile in Indonesia, water quality monitoring has not been developed to adapt to Indonesia’s natural conditions. Some researchers use the existing biotic indices such as FBI, LQI, SIGNAL, and others. Therefore, this study aims to determine the status of water quality using several biotic indices and to compare the sensitivity and feasibility of indices on monitoring activities using simple matrix and Pearson correlation test. The interpretation results of FBI, LQI, and Singscore to determine water quality on each station in Brantas, Opak, Progo, and Cileungsi Rivers were different. The Pearson’s correlations test showed that the sensitivities are different between rivers. Those results are affected by the river conditions and also the activities around the rivers which release the pollution into the river. The FBI index showed the greatest score number of sensitivities among the other indexes. Keywords: macroinvertebrate, monitoring, river, sensitivity

Abstract

Until now there has not been a centralized Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) in IPB, even though there are wastewater treatments in several locations that are scattered in the campus area. Various activities on the Dramaga IPB campus have the potential to produce wastewater, such as laboratory activities, especially chemical and biological laboratories, canteens, offices, and dormitories. The existence of scattered laboratories requires a centralized and integrated WWTP. For this reason, mapping of wastewater distribution is needed to arrange the location of the wastewater treatment plant, within the campus. Interviews with the perpetrators of activities, measurement of wastewater quality, and sampling, were carried out at the work units producing wastewater on the campus of IPB. The distribution of wastewater was grouped according to the location of the work units producing waste and identified the types of waste produced (B3-dangerous and toxic and non-B3), then presented in a map. The map was used as a reference in determining the location of wastewater treatment plants. The results showed that each work unit contributes organic waste that was not too different, the source of inorganic and B3 wastewater distribution followed the location of the laboratory which was also quite scattered in the Dramaga IPB campus area. Based on the distribution of available waste, the presence of wastewater in the campus environment of IPB was divided into two regional groups. Therefore, the location of the wastewater treatment plant was directed at two locations, namely on the Northeast side (IPAL I) and the West side (IPAL II) of IPB campus. Abstract

Pari Island has considerable natural resource potential, so that it has the potential to have socio-economic impacts on the local community if managed properly. The current management of Pari Island is indeed focused on the management of marine tourism, and this activity has been going on for a long time and has had a very significant impact on the economic sector in Pari Island. On the other hand, marine tourism activities in Pari Island are feared to have an impact on the ecological sector, so that to achieve sustainable management, good supervision and control is needed so that its potential is maintained. The purpose of this research is to see the status of socio-economic and ecological sustainability as a result of the development of marine tourism in Pari Island. The data were collected through in-depth interviews with the people of Pari Island, apart from that the data were also obtained from primary and secondary data related to socio-ecology. To assess the level of sustainability in each dimension, a Multidimensional Scaling (MDS) analysis was carried out, in order to obtain two dimensions that had a value below 75%, namely the institutional dimension which had a value of 27.3% (bad), and the infrastructure dimension which had a value. 73.3% (Enough). Meanwhile, the other 3 dimensions, such as the ecological, economic, and social dimensions, show that the value is in the continuous category, namely> 75% so that it is very supportive of the sustainability of marine tourism business management. Abstract

ABSTRACTSunlight is one of the most important environmental factors both directly and indirectly for  photosynthetic organisms in providing energy to be converted into chemical energy with the help of chlorophyll. This study aims to examine the relationship between the availability of sunlight and the concentration of photosynthetic pigments in Bali Strait waters. The study was conducted in the morning, midday and afternoon at five research stations in the Bali Strait waters. Canonical correlation analysis was used to determine the relationship between sunlight availability and photosynthetic pigment formation. The results showed that the intensity of sunlight (Y2) had more influence on the formation of chlorophyll-b (Y1) pigments with canonical correlation of 0.4512 when compared with the formation of chlorophyll-a (Y1) pigment with a correlation value of 0.3982. The higher formation of chlorophyll-b (Y1) pigments can significantly increase the formation of carotenoid pigments (Y1) with canonical correlation values of 0.7419. From these results it can be concluded that chlorophyll-b pigments and carotenoid pigments will be formed optimally at low light intensities.

Abstract

Research was aimed at determining toxicity of drilling cuttings towards Daphnia, revealed in LC50 96 hours, meaning that cuttings concentration cause 50% population of Daphnia within the period of 96 hour observation. LC50 96 hour is utilized for preliminary strategy of managing drilling cuttings. Static test was applied at the main bioassay experiment.  Mortality was as an indicator of toxicity.  Bioassay experiment refers to US-EPA (1991, 1996, 2002); Ziehl and Schmitt (2000).  Mortality and water quality fluctuation were observed at hours 2, 4, 6, 8, 24, 48, 72, and 96. Determination of LC50 96 hour was carried out by the method of Probit Analysis.  Manual count and software EPA Probit Analysis Version 1.5 were applied. LC50 96 hours cuttings towards Daphnia is 22.177 - 22,208 ppm.  This indicates that cuttings has almost non-toxic characteristic.  However, disposal of these cuttings needs oil content measurement.  If oil content meets regulation (? 10%), cuttings is allowed to be discharged to the surrounding terrestrial environment.

Abstract

Ostrea edulis is one of the most common types of meat oysters and is commonly consumed by people in Kuala Gigieng, but until now there is not much scientific information about this species. The purpose of this study was to describe the ecomorphology of Ostrea edulis in Kuala Gigieng waters. This research was conducted from August to September 2013 in Kuala Gigieng Waters, Aceh Besar District. The method used in this research is purposive sampling. Identification of samples based on shell morphological characteristics including the exterior and interior of the shell using a magnifier lamp. The results showed that Ostrea edulis found in Kuala Gigieng waters had round, rough, hard, thick and uneven shells. The two valves are also not the same size, where the left valve is more concave than the right valve which tends to be flat. This is a form of the adaptation pattern of Ostrea edulis in Kuala Gigieng which tends to have a medium sand and clay sand substrate with a fairly high predation from both natural and human predation.
