Abstract

This research is motivated by two primary factors. First, the emergence of alternative news media can be considered as a counterbalance to the professional news media with their various biases. The second pertains to the protracted legislative process of the Sexual Violence Bill (RUU TPKS) before its eventual enactment. The objective of this study is to see examine these two media categories frame the protracted struggle in the legislative process of the TPKS Bill, given that framing reflects the media's perspective, which subsequently influence the audience's understanding of the issue. The subjects of this research are news related to the TPKS Bill as presented by both professional and alternative media in Indonesia. This research employs a qualitative approach in conjunction with the framing method developed by Robert Entman. This study’s findings reveal diametrical contrast in the frames adopted by professional and alternative media in reporting the TPKS Bill. Professional media constructs a frame that characterizes the protracted discussion of the TPKS Bill in the DPR as a technical-procedural problem. In contrast, alternative media framed it as a result of the DPR’s failure or lack of commitment to protect victims of sexual violence.

Abstract

The digital evolution in the journalistic arena forces journalists to adapt their practices to the rules that come from the economic arena associated with commercialization. Reduced advertising revenue has resulted in the media tending to prioritize financial survival over journalistic principles or ethics. This research aims to describe how journalists struggle to define journalistic practices amidst the pressure of commercialization, using Bourdieu’s theoretical perspective. The method used is metajournalistic discourse, using metajournalistic documents in the form of scripts written by digital journalists who broadcast them on Remotivi. Metajournalistic discourse is a textual analysis method that focuses on how journalists tell stories about their journalistic practices, and these stories are assumed to shape the journalistic arena they inhabit. The findings show that journalists experience a paradox in defining and carrying out journalistic practices that are considered ideal. On the one hand, journalists appear to carry out journalistic practices in a situation with a high degree of heteronomy. On the other hand, journalists also seek to develop resistance by maintaining or developing definitions of journalistic practices or norms that are close to the autonomy pole, for example, by defining their journalistic practice with the term “journalistic jihad.” These idealized journalistic definitions or norms (which prioritize verification, accuracy, and adherence to journalistic firewalls) are shared and circulated through discourse texts to become resistance narratives.

Abstract

The mass media holds an important element in aspects of public life, because of the power of mass media itself which can provide information and form public opinion, through the published news. Making news in the mass media is essentially a compilation of the realities seen by journalists wbich are then rearranged to form a new “story”. Therefore, it is not an exaggeration to say that all media content is a constructed reality. Media coverage is an effort to construct reality, which is an effort to restructure the reality of an event or a number of events that were originally fragmented (random) to become systematic to form a meaningful story or discourse. Because the way to construct an event will give a certain image of reality. One of the aspects of public life is the world of higher education, especially in Indonesia. Where it is important to know how the mass media provide a picture or portrait of higher education, which of course will be able to provide a perspective on the quality of education in Indonesia. Plagiarism is one of the issues that has received sharp attention regarding to the quality of education in Indonesia. Tempo specifically provides coverage related to plagiarism by leaders of the world of higher education.

Abstract

Technological advancements have impacted education, influencing student behavior across different eras—1990s, 2000s, and today. This survey-based research uses conventional sampling techniques and supports the theory of technological determinism, showing how communication technology affects behavior, thought patterns, and social interactions. Face-to-face communication has largely been replaced by online interactions. The study finds that chatting remains a common activity while waiting for lecturers, and highlights a decline in reading habits. Instead, frequent use of mobile phone has become prevalent. The research underscores how technology reshapes both learning environments and student habits.

Abstract

This research focuses on the problems surrounding mining conflicts and the synergistic CSR (corporate social responsibility) program owned by PT Semen Gresik at the Rembang Factory in Timbrangan Village, Kab. Rembang, which includes areas directly adjacent to the location of the factory or source of raw materials (Ring 1). The purpose of this study is to describe the experiences and meanings of local leaders (informal leaders, who are divided into pro and contra groups) regarding the CSR program that carries the narrative of welfare. This study uses a qualitative approach and a phenemenological method, in which the researcher allows community leaders who are the research subjects to actively construct meaning through their intersubjective experiences related to the Synergy CSR program. Data collection was carried out through in-depth interviews to obtain the essence of the phenomenon that was observed and told from a first-person perspective. This study found that CSR Synergy is interpreted by local leaders (informal leaders) as a program that tends to formulate the needs of the target community with the perspective of their own interests, tends to be compiled and implemented based on an assessment of citizens' needs. Research subjects also interpret CSR as a program that make targeted societies increasingly dependent on, not empowering, and merely fulfilling statutory obligations as a formality or to create a public image since the company is responsible for exploiting the natural resources. The welfare narrative brought by the CSR program was interpreted by the research subjects as a strategy to trick the public to cover up the impact of environmental damage. In the end, this meaning has the implication of the emergence of apathy, which is reflected in the local imagery of a short-sighted ear (blind ear, deaf eye).

Abstract

This research focuses on the problematic meaning of opinion leaders' views on the Dolly Bangkit community development program initiated by the Surabaya City Government in response to the conflict following the closure of Dolly's prostitution site in Surabaya. The problems are described from the opinion leader's point of view. This research uses a qualitative approach and phenomenological methods. The aim is to describe the experience of opinion leaders in dealing with the Dolly Bangkit program, which in turn shapes the meaning of the program. The results indicate that there are problems with the experience as well as the meaning. On the one hand, this program is interpreted as a helpful program to change the negative image of the Dolly area. On the other hand, opinion leaders also interpret this program as an imaging event by the Surabaya City Government officials to show that they are responsible for the closure. They also saw that there was a neglect of several essential things in the community development program, such as the participation or involvement of the target community and training that facilitate the target community in finding solutions, as well as aspects of equality.

Abstract

This study was conducted to see the depiction of inland people who became minorities in Indonesian films. Since the 2000s, Indonesian films have tended to portray minorities as a group that still lags behind. This is seen from the two film categories selected in this study, namely educational and social-themed films. This study was conducted to see how inland people were described using Ferdinand de Saussure's semiotic method. As a knife of analysis will be used the concept of blackness developed by Ed Guerrero to see aspects of behavior, intelligence, and emotions of the minority groups depicted in the film. The films analyzed are Sokola Rimba and Lost in Papua. The results showed that Indonesian films with the theme of education and social always attached minorities with the impression of being stupid, primitive and backward. In the category of behavior (behavior), inland people tend to be displayed close to backwardness (primitive) or evil. While intelligent (intelligence), they are described as having low intelligence or stupid, and emotionally (emotionally) are described as people close to violence and unable to find a solution if a problem occurs. Such images can form prejudices in the minds of the public, which then crystallize into stereotypes that are considered true.

Abstract

This research stems from using online dating, originally used to make it easier for users to find friends, relationships, or partners. However, online dating is often used to practice catfishing or identity fraud. This phenomenon arises as an implication of the ease of creating more than one personal account, which is used as a reflection of the identity that the perpetrator wants to display. This topic is related to the theme of computer-mediated communication (CMC), which allows individuals to communicate asynchronously, which makes it easier for perpetrators to find victims. This research aims to find out the experiences of catfishing perpetrators and how they interpret the experience of doing so. This research uses the phenomenological method, where each informant constructs meaning through their intersubjective side. Data collection techniques were conducted through in-depth interviews to obtain results from a first-person perspective. The results of this research describe the experience of catfishing perpetrators interacting and finding victims in online dating applications. In addition, the research also found that the perpetrators interpreted their catfishing practice not only as the fulfillment of sexual desires but also as the fulfillment of desires that are not in the real world (wanting to be praised, recognized, and have a sense of pride). The experiences and meanings of the research subjects reflect modernity and the fulfillment of sexual desires online. Unlike several previous studies, this phenomenological research can see the depth of the essence of catfishing behavior because it uses original data extracted from the perpetrator’s experience (first party).
