Abstract

In delivering the contents of the World Health Organization’s Covid-19 Myth-busters, the creator realized clause complexes besides clause simplexes. This research focuses on analyzing logico-semantic relation of clause complex. Thus, it can reveal the creator’s intention in realizing the clause complexes when conveying the myth-busters to the people of the world. This research utilizes a qualitative-descriptive research method. There are 48 expansion relationships in the myth-busters. They include one elaboration relationship, 22 extension relationships, and 25 enhancement relationships. Enhancement is the most-realized clause relationship in the myth-busters. This means that the creator intended to convey complementary ideas in the clause complexes by referencing time, condition, reason, purpose, and cause related to managing misinformation about Covid-19.

Abstract

Besides the Sundanese ethnic group as the largest ethnic group in the city of Bandung, there is also the Chinese ethnic group. To strengthen tolerance and enhance mutual understanding and appreciation between these two ethnic groups, a Community Service Activity (PPM) was conducted in the form of a Moon Festival with the theme "Bright Moonlight Brings Happiness". This activity was chosen because both Sundanese and Chinese cultures have similarities in their views of the moon. It is this similar perspective that underpins the PPM activity through collaboration with various Sundanese and Chinese communities. The Moon Festival was carried out in collaboration with Yayasan Dana Sosial Priangan (YDSP) Bandung, which already has the necessary assets for the implementation of this activity. PPM was carried out through four stages: discover, design, define, and reflect. The core of the PPM activity is the Moon Festival, consisting of a series of events held on September 29, 2023, in YDSP Hall. During this Moon Festival, there were presentations on the meaning of the moon from the perspectives of the Sundanese and Chinese ethnic groups, artistic performances including singing, dancing, musical poetry, and drama, all themed around the moon. In this activity, both the Sundanese and Chinese communities get to know each other and learn about the moon from different cultural perspectives, thus achieving the goal of strengthening interaction between Sundanese and Chinese cultures.

The result shows that all types of Themes and Thematic Progressions are found in both writings. The Unmarked Topical Theme and Constant Theme Patterns are most frequently used. The conclusion is that Low Achiever's Descriptive Writings cannot be considered as a low-coherent text based on School's rubric only, Theme and Thematic Progression analysis is suggested to be conducted for extra observation and evaluation despite of the easy and common themes many constant types used to start the clauses in both of their writings. Keywords: descriptive text, low achiever's writings systemic functional linguistics, theme, and thematic progression

Abstract

Alongside the Tūfānu 'l-ʔAqṣā or 'Al-Aqsa Flood' operation, the phenomenon of boycotting Israel was once again discussed around the world. This boycott caused a decrease in revenue for several Israeli companies in Muslim countries, including Arab countries. Media as one of the institutions that participate in shaping public image and opinion on various matters certainly has a hand in the spread of boycott propaganda. Moreover, media such as Al Jazeera which has a wide reach and high credibility in Arab countries, play a significant role in the spread of boycott propaganda. One of the features used by the media, which can construct a person's concepts and arguments fundamentally, as well as persuade, is metaphor. Moreover, one of the metaphors that is widely used in various fields, especially politics, to attract public attention and create influence is the war metaphor. This study aims to describe the conceptual metaphor of war and to reveal the ideology behind the use of war metaphors in the Israel boycott discourse on the Al Jazeera Arabic online newspaper. This study reveals that the war metaphor is not merely linguistic, but also expresses Al Jazeera’s ideological stance, shaping public perception of the Israeli–Palestinian conflict, especially regarding the boycott. The news data source was obtained from the Al Jazeera Arabic online newspaper since the Tūfānu ‘l-ʔAqṣā or 'Al-Aqsa Flood' operation from 7 October 2023 to 31 May 2024. This qualitative descriptive study analyzes metaphors through three stages of Critical Metaphor Analysis: metaphor identification using MIP, interpretation using conceptual metaphor theory, and explanation. A total of 74 metaphorical expressions were identified from 12 war-related lexemes. All war metaphors frame the boycott positively by highlighting its urgency, power, effectiveness, and impact, especially within the context of Palestinian resistance. These findings indicate that Al Jazeera aligns with the ideology of resistance and promotes it through metaphorical framing. The significance of this study lies in its contribution to understanding how ideological war metaphors influence public perception and mobilize political action. It sheds light on the rhetorical strategies of Arab media in shaping resistance discourse, offering broader insight into the role of language in geopolitical narratives.
