Abstract

This study aims to determine the distribution of total suspended solid concentration (TSS) in the waters around TPI Dumai. Water samples were taken from 12 sampling point from the waters during high and low tides to determine TSS concentration. The concentration of total suspended solids ranges from 60-130 mg/l. The concentration is relatively higher (>80 mg/l) in the area that is close to residential areas and TPI. The highest concentration of total suspended solids was 117 mg/l found in waters with a depth of 1-3 m, while the lowest was 81 mg/l found at the sampling point of 5,9. The distribution of chlorophyll-a concentration is relatively higher around the coast which is around 0.476-0.178 mg/l, and it's lower off the shore which is around 0.080-0.090 mg/l. The chlorophyll-a concentration is lower in waters far from the coast because there is no direct nutrient supply from the land. The regression analysis indicate that Tss and chlorophyll-a has a weak relationship between the two variables relatively weak but they are still affecting each other

Abstract

This research was carried out in July 2023 in Muara Sungai Dumai, Dumai City, Riau Province. This study aims to conduct depth mapping analysis using echosounders based on reference corrections to tides. Tidal analysis is performed to determine reference values such as MSL (Mean Sea level) and tidal characteristics. The methods used are survey methods and quantitative analysis. The results showed that the waters of the Dumai River Estuary were mixed tide prevailing semi-diurnal with a formzahl value of 0.29. There is tidal asymmetry with the time to the high tide faster than the time to low tide. The depth ranges from 0.28 to 7.34 m, increasing to 40 m in the Rapat Strait. The weak current and the difference in HHWL values of 3.55 m and MSL 0.14 m affect water level rise due to bathymetric changes at high tide.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the rate of change of the coastline and the effect of sedimentation processes, currents, and waves on the coastline in the coastal area between Batang Anai Estuary and Batang Mangur Estuary, West Sumatra Province. End Point Rate (EPR) is a method that can be used to calculate the rate of change of coastline by displaying transects according to their categories (high abrasion, medium abrasion, low abrasion, stable, and accretion). In 1993–2023, there was a change in the coastline in the form of abrasion, which reached ±150 m with a change rate of ±1.63 m/year. The abrasion at the research station is classified into high, medium, and low categories. Accretion also occurs in the area around the research station, and some areas do not experience significant changes or remain in a stable condition. Currents in the coastal area between Batang Anai Estuary and Batang Mangur Estuary, Padang Pariaman Regency, are included in the slow-moderate category with an average value of 0.19-0.28 m/s. Wave height is included in the low–low category with an average value of 0.1–0.58 m. Although currents and wave heights are included in the low category, some areas lacking coastal vegetation and no breakwaters can experience abrasion and accretion.

Abstract

Abrasion is a common problem in coastal areas. This is due to natural factors that influence the phenomenon of abrasion in a coastal area, including the hydro-oceanographic processes that take place in the sea. Pasir Jambak Beach is one of the beaches in Padang City that is experiencing worrying abrasion. Therefore, it is necessary to research the analysis of physical hydro-oceanographic factors for beach abrasion. This survey was conducted in February - April 2023 at Pasir Jambak Beach. This study aimed to determine the degree of abrasion and its relationship to the hydro-oceanographic physics of the beach. The method used is survey and purposive sampling. The data obtained were tabulated and descriptively quantitatively analyzed by multiple linear regression. The results showed that the beach experienced a dominant abrasion process in the period 1995-2023 compared to accretion with an abrasion rate of 77.94%. The highest average wear rate occurred in 2019-2023 of 3.86 m/year and the lowest in 2003-2007 of 1.9 m/year. Physical hydro-oceanographic factors at Pasir Jambak Beach have a significant influence on the abrasion phenomenon that occurs.

Abstract

This research was conducted from February to March 2023 in Setan island, West Sumatra. This study aimed to determine the sediment accumulation rate and coral cover, as well as the correlation between sediment accumulation rate and coral cover. The survey method was used in this research. The sediment accumulation rate was measured using a sediment trap. At the same time, the coral cover was observed using the underwater photo transect (UPT) method with a transect length of 50 m. The total suspended solid was analyzed using the Gravimetric method. Observations were made at four sampling points at depths of 3 and 6 m. The sediment accumulation rate at a depth of 3 m ranged from 0.946315 to 1.534992 mg/cm²/day, while at a depth of 6 meters, it ranged from 1.357756 to 1.607786 mg/cm²/day. The percentage of live coral cover at a depth of 3 meters ranged from 3.40% to 31.36%, and at a depth of 6 m, it ranged from 0.33% to 30.50%. The total suspended solids values ranged from 23 to 96 mg/L. Regression analysis showed that the sediment accumulation rate negatively influenced the percentage of live coral cover.

Abstract

The Kampar River Estuary is the main river in Riau province, which empties into the Malacca Strait and has a unique potential for research. The characteristics of the Kampar River Estuary are concurrent and have high tidal elevations, resulting in the occurrence of a Tidal Bore, which is referred to as Bono. The impact of sedimentation is generally quite detrimental, namely the siltation in several places, such as the waters of the Kampar River Estuary, which are dense areas of human activity. This study aimed to determine the relationship between hydrodynamic patterns, suspended solids' distribution pattern, and the concentration value of suspended solids distribution in the Kampar River estuary. This research method is surveyed and discussed descriptively. Current patterns affect the distribution of sediments in the Kampar River estuary. The TSS distribution pattern tends to follow the same direction as the movement of tidal currents where, during high tide, it tends to lead to the southwest of the Kampar River estuary, while during low tide tends to lead to the northeast and northwest, it this is because, in the Kampar River estuary, there is an island that makes the mouth of the Kampar River estuary V-shaped. Between hydrodynamic patterns and TSS distribution patterns, there is a moderate negative relationship (r = 0.50), which means that there is a significant influence between hydro patterns and TSS distribution patterns in the waters of the Kampar River estuary, between hydrodynamic patterns and TSS distribution patterns in the waters of the Kampar River estuary. The lowest value of TSS concentration in the waters of the Kampar River Estuary at high tide to low tide is Station 7, with a range of 102 mg/L, and the highest value at Stations 3, 4, and 9. At station 3, there are values ranging from 1756 mg/L; at Station 4, there are values ranging from 2823 mg/L; and at Station 9, there are values ranging from 1269 mg/L; the high concentration of TSS results in low brightness in the study area

Abstract

This research examines the influence of the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) and El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on sea surface temperature (SST) and rainfall variability in the coastal waters of West Sumatra over the period 2014–2024. The analysis draws on the Dipole Mode Index (DMI), Niño 3.4 index, SST, and rainfall data, processed using MathWorks and Excel. Regression analysis between field and satellite-derived SST data showed a strong correlation (R² = 0.936), confirming the reliability of satellite data for this study. Findings reveal that positive IOD and El Niño events are generally associated with cooler SSTs and reduced rainfall. In contrast, negative IOD and La Niña phases correspond to warmer SSTs and increased rainfall. The IOD appears to exert a more pronounced influence on SST variability than ENSO. Notably, the combined occurrence of a positive IOD and El Niño amplifies the decline in SST and rainfall. At the same time, the combination of a negative IOD and La Niña enhances increases in these variables. These results highlight the significant role of large-scale climate mode in shaping regional oceanographic and atmospheric conditions in the West Sumatra region.

Abstract

This research was conducted in February 2021 at the mouth of the Dumai River, Rupat Strait. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of sediment supply from land on changes in bathymetry in the waters of the Rupat Strait based on the analysis of suspended sediment (SSC) and suspended solids (TSS) divided by the area of the study. The method used is a survey method. The results showed that as much as 26,94 tons/year of sediment entered the Rupat Strait and was distributed in the research area. Each part of the research area has a different bathymetric change value. This is presumably due to oceanographic factors in the waters of the Rupat Strait such as strong and weak river currents when entering the sea, the distance between the research area and the sediment supply source, human activities in each part of the study area, erosion along the river and abrasion at the river mouth. the presence of mangrove forests, dominant sediment types, sloping water topography, the cross-sectional width of the river as a sediment supplier, and suspended solids.
