Abstract

This research was conducted in February 2021 at the mouth of the Dumai River, Rupat Strait. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of sediment supply from land on changes in bathymetry in the waters of the Rupat Strait based on the analysis of suspended sediment (SSC) and suspended solids (TSS) divided by the area of the study. The method used is a survey method. The results showed that as much as 26,94 tons/year of sediment entered the Rupat Strait and was distributed in the research area. Each part of the research area has a different bathymetric change value. This is presumably due to oceanographic factors in the waters of the Rupat Strait such as strong and weak river currents when entering the sea, the distance between the research area and the sediment supply source, human activities in each part of the study area, erosion along the river and abrasion at the river mouth. the presence of mangrove forests, dominant sediment types, sloping water topography, the cross-sectional width of the river as a sediment supplier, and suspended solids.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine the rate of shoreline change and the level of abrasion in Bukit Batu District, Bengkalis Regency, Riau Province based on several physical variables in the coastal area. End Point Rate (EPR) is a method that can be used to calculate the rate of shoreline change by displaying transects according to their category (high abrasion, medium abrasion, low abrasion, stable, and accretion). From 1991-2021 there was an abrasion of ±139.71 m equivalent to ±4.65 m/year which mostly occurred in Sukajadi Village and Pangkalan Jambi Village, while accretion of ±27.51 m equivalent to ±1.58 m/year mostly occurred in Pakning Asal Village and Sejangat Village. Moderate abrasion is the predominant type. Sukajadi and Pangkalan Jambi are villages that have experienced high levels of abrasion. The area affected by abrasion has moderate and fast currents as well as coastal protection in the form of mangroves, most of which have been damaged and require repairs. Therefore, the main factors causing the abrasion are thought to be the lack of coastal protection and high-speed currents and waves flowing from the Malacca Strait.

Abstract

Pasumpahan Island is an area that is affected by currents, waves and sedimentation processes because it is directly adjacent to the Indian Ocean and the mouth of the Pisang River, this causes changes in the coastline in the form of abrasion and accretion on the island. This study aims to determine the effect of currents, waves, and sedimentation processes on the rate of change of the shoreline for 10 years (1991-2001) on Pasumpahan Island. This research was conducted in March 2022 on Pasumpahan Island, Padang City, West Sumatra Province. The method used is a survey method to obtain primary data including current speed, heightwaves and sediments. The study method used is a quantitative method with a multi-temporal satellite imagery approachusing the Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS) software with the End Point Rate (EPR) approach. The results of the analysis of current velocity values ranged from 0.21-0.28 m/s, wave heights ranged from 0.24-0.55 m, the average diameter of the sediment ranged from 0.83-1 Φ. The results of image data processing show that there has been a change in the shoreline in the form of low category abrasion (0.4 m/year), stable (1.42 m/year), and accretion (3.07 m/year) on Pasumpahan Island.

Abstract

Coral reefs play a role in maintaining marine biodiversity by providing habitat for various aquatic organisms, including reef fish from the Pomacentridae family. This study aims to analyze the relationship between coral reef cover and the Abundance of Pomacentridae reef fish in the waters of Setan Island, West Sumatra. The underwater photo transect (UPT) method is employed for coral cover analysis, while the underwater visual census (UVC) method is utilized for collecting fish abundance data. The results showed that the average percentage value of coral reef cover at a depth of 3 m was 20.38%, and at a depth of 6 m, it was 17.51%, indicating a poor category for the percentage value of coral reef cover. Data collection was conducted at four different stations. The highest coral cover was recorded at Station I (31.35%), while the lowest was at Station IV (0.33%). The Abundance of Pomacentridae reef fish varied between stations, with the highest Abundance observed in areas with higher coral cover. Based on simple linear regression analysis, the percentage of live coral cover accounts for 56.19% of the variation in the abundance value of Pomacentridae coral fish (R² = 0.5619), with a strong correlation (r = 0.7496). This indicates that declining coral reef conditions can harm fish populations. This finding underscores the significance of coral reef conservation efforts in maintaining marine biodiversity and ecosystem balance

Abstract

The Rupat Strait, a strategically crucial marine channel separating Sumatra Island from Rupat Island, exhibits complex hydrodynamic characteristics influenced by tidal propagation from the adjacent Malacca Strait. As a vital shipping corridor, the strait's navigational safety is fundamentally governed by its bathymetric profile and tidal regime. This study implements an integrated methodological framework combining in situ bathymetric surveys with MIKE 21 hydrodynamic modeling to assess morphological dynamics quantitatively. Systematic validation of model outputs against field measurements revealed significant spatial variations in seafloor topography, including pronounced shallowing (>6.6 m) and substantial deepening (≤17 m) at distinct locations. Concurrent analysis of tidal data demonstrated extreme water level fluctuations, ranging from -2.36 m during the lowest astronomical tides to +6.28 m during peak tidal surges. These geomorphological alterations appear correlated with anthropogenic pressures, particularly intensive shipping traffic and coastal zone modifications, suggesting a coupled natural-anthropogenic forcing mechanism governing the strait's evolving morphodynamics. The findings highlight the critical need for ongoing monitoring to ensure maritime safety and sustainable coastal management in this rapidly changing marine environment
